If you could live in any other time period and culture in history, what would it be?

Personally, I'd have to go with Ancient Rome, during the Republic (I don't like god-like emperors). This is of course assuming that I was a free citizen and not a slave, because that would suck.

inb4 all the katana and anime lovers choose feudal Japan

I'm going for something else than the eternal Romans/Greeks/China you get in threads like this.

So I'm going for early/mid medieval Arabia, also known as the Islamic Golden Age [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Golden_Age]. The Arab world was the center of science, art and philosophy in those days.

Plus it gives me a Dune-like vibe, and I dig that. Shame about the slavery though.

That's a good choice. In the 900s AD Baghdad was the most advanced city in the world. During this period the Arabs and Byzantines preserved Greek and Roman technology, literature, and art while the rest of the Mediterranean and Europe were busy murdering each other and tending their turnips

I'd have to go with ancient Greece, about the time Phillip II was planning his war against Persia. While the voyeur in me would love to have witnessed Alexander's campaigns, the historian in me would much prefer to just live among the people and see how different social groups reacted to Macedonian rule.

It would also give me a chance to revere Aristotle in person and even, possibly, learn from him personally, as well as what he believed of his teacher's schools of thought. It's always seemed a great shame to me that we have lost so much of the ancients true beleifs and cultures, replaced by the strict dogma of monotheism.

I would either live in Ancient Rome in the times of Julius Caesar and go there to be a Legionnaire, become a pirate in well...the golden age of pirates or go to 700-1050AD (notice the ad and not CE), grow a beard, wear an odd helmet, carry a sword and become a viking!

I would want to live in Athens around 370 BC. I am actually studying Greek so I would be good there.

I'm kinda happy with my own time zone. What with all this technology and basic human rights...
Bah! "Might makes right" worked just fine for thousands of years, didn't it? Plus, Hammurabi's Code and Justinian's Law were very enlightened periods of human rights

I'd be happy with Victorian Era England or World War II Russia or Finland. Oh and this current timezone of course, very happy right now.

I would love to live in England during the 19th to early 20th century. That period of time is just absolutely fascinating for me. *looks at when the Victorian Era took place* Yeah, I'd say Victorian Era England would be my choice. :)

I would like to live in the New World prior to the arrival of the Europeans (of course, I am of European descent and would not want to introduce any nasty diseases, so it would be more 'I would like to be a person living in that place' more than 'I myself would like to live in that place'). There is so much mystery there, and from the sounds of it life was a damn sight better than in Europe. Of course, saying 'the New World' is pretty vague, and things were very different all over. I think I would like to try tribal life in the Great Lakes/Iroquois Nation area--beautiful area, and very enlightened people. Or in the Caribbean--before stupid Columbus arrived, the island where the Taino lived sounds like absolute paradise, and the people were so friendly and peaceful. Or in the Amazon Jungle--also a lot of very peaceful tribes there, plus you get the benefit of being a part of one of the most remarkable environments on Earth.

Not to mention that they were reaching levels of enlightment not seen in Europe until 2 centuries later, on some subjects even more so.

And then compare that to what the Arab world is today...what a rotten shame. I blame those European fucknuts who had to insist on their freakin' cruscades. And Genghis Khan. Like, a lot.

Well if I was just an observer then Id say during Tudor England. I'd love to see what really happened to Anne Boylen. Then again I might get the urge to do pokour and pretend to be an assassin.

The Republic of Venice at it's high points. Italian weather, beautiful city, rich trade center, and about as much freedom as was possible back in the day.

I'd like to live in Feudal Japan. I'd get to carry a katana without even so much as a second glance from people, fight ninja's, drift around with no real goal in mind and just enjoy the scenery. Whats not to like about that?

This is the only one I'd like, seeing as it enjoys relatively unmitigated free speech on cheap internet, with an abundance of clean water, little disease and not much crime, with no super-major wars happening.
In the future, we may not have such privileges with the internet.
In the past, video games did not exist, and health was for the Bourgeoisie.
In the further past, not being at war meant your nation/kingdom was a pansy and deserved to be invaded. You also could be killed for knowing math or how to read because you were a witch. Additionally, even in English-speaking lands, English has changed dramatically over the past 150 years, so much that you'd have a hard time reading stuff back in ye olde days of steampunk, let alone earlier.
