Well, as I suspect a lot of other people have said, mix the open world goodness of a Bethesda game with the storytelling and character development of a Bioware game and you have, in my eyes, the greatest RPG ever. It couldn't possibly go wrong!

I got one. Post-Post-Apolcolyptic desert. You can either play as the two Orwellian side who's main goal is to destroy each other or the bunch of Scrappers in a junkyard who'll try to keep the peace.

You'll then can make the choice to join the rebellion or keep fighting between the two sides.

....

And there should be a mini-game that catapults tanks onto invading forces.

The simplicity of Minecraft plus the freedom of Freelancer, the combat of Mass Effect, and the base building of most any RTS. For those with a hard time visualizing this, take Freelancer (space combat sim where you fly around and do pretty much whatever you want) as the base, then add the Mass Effect ground combat in, and take the mining/crafting out of Minecraft. In practice, this would mean starting out with a space ship, given a long-range goal that occasionally chimes in, and then either making your own ships/weapons out of mined material, selling said material for money to buy ships/weapons, or doing contracts for money, etc., all the while building up a space empire and occasionally having large battles, you giving commanders instructions before you sneak in to take out some high-value targets with your small strike team. This wouldn't be any other scenario like that, either, if you have inferior forces or stupid tactics, you lose forces and have to abort the mission mid-way, possibly ruining your chances for that target, or having to take a more difficult way in after they board up the window you used, etc.

In a nutshell, something where things don't get left behind, "forgotten" (oh, yeah, we could have fired our torpedos, yes, but storming the enemy ship with nothing but small arms builds character), or rendered moot. It would probably take a decade of coding and a half-dozen DvDs to hold all of it, but it would be worth it.

Morrowind, only with better developed characters, more in depth world and plot, and changed setting.

Morrowind brushed uncomfortably close to perfection, so they had to dumb it down to appeal for the masses in Oblivion, and from what I have heard, Skyrim will do the same.

Hm...Obsidian for characters and dialogue(old school dialogue that is, not Alpha Protocol), Troika for story, Valve for optimization and performance, CD Projekt for world creation, Larian for quests and coming up with new ideas and maybe World of Darkness vibes.

Add realistic animations, good voice actors, unique character models and fun quests for everyone, stir and chase off EA and Activision so that they don't even breathe on the game.

I just watched the trailer for Skyrim and am so happy. Happy that after all these years, I feel genuinely excited about a major big studio game release again. In many ways, the Elder Scrolls games are to me milestones towards the PERFECT RPG, as I see RPGs. But I digress.

If you had the resources, what would your perfect RPG be like? Describe features, story, setting, everything!
Pong, decent boss fight with AI mechanics that the player can earn, 2 Player competitive campaign, the plot would be a little linear since there is no real room for twists, but there could be some very exciting and frantic moments when not knowing for sure if you could make that much needed block in a tied sudden death event. And best of all it has a cyclical ending that leads it right back to the start.

Seriously though I would just take Skies of Arcadia Legends update it to the art style/graphics of Valkiria Chronicles and add in voice over's/speech animation instead of text dialogue. It would be totally linear but it really is an epic story with surprisingly captivating turn based combat.

I have this idea for an unusual Space based RPG.

So, the Earth's Orbit has failed and it is, as we speak, beginning it's slow descent towards the sun. There is still 10 years before it reaches the point where no human can survive on it's surface. In that 10 years, A sizable voluntary portion of humanity is to be relocated via giant spaceships (think "science victory of Civ" style) to new worlds to preserve humanity.

You begin by choosing to be the head of one of 3 nations' space programs.

1) Democratic capitalist USA
2) Communistic/Socialist USSR (It is an alternate history where the USSR never collapsed, and is actually pretty well-off; The Cold War is also over)
3) Theocratic Super-State of [something] (Either Catholic or Muslim; can't decide)

Each nation has a vastly different population base....and YOU must decide who gets to board your preservation fleet. Do you take only the smartest? The Richest? The most Devout? Your choice....

After the 10 years is up, Your fleet leaves Earth, alongside the fleets of the two other super-powers. You must cast out into the void of space and keep your fleet alive (by micro-managing resources, settling disputes, fighting Alien and Human Raider fleets, "Leveling up" your ships with new/captured tech.etc.) until you manage to finally find a new Homeworld.

Inspirations: uhh....Homeworld and Battlestar Galactica (which I'm watching and is pretty good)....

Also, If a similar game already exists: Color me stupid and hand me a name. I'll go to the corner and read about it in shame.....

That was very entertaining to read. Do you have a full story down? Or was that it, an interesting premise?

I'm addicted to the level-up and character customization portions of RPGs. Give me a large level cap, 2-3 talent points per level-up, a robust attribute system (Dragon Age 2 had a great attribute system), and lots and lots of loot and gear upgrades. Then make sure you have at least half a dozen unique classes, and lots of ways to customize that character to your playstyle via talents, attributes, and gear upgrades.

Fun combat doesn't hurt either. Torchlight, Mass Effect 2, and Dragon Age 2 all had fun combat.

Bioware written and co-developed with Bethesda...open-world pirate-themed rpg!

EDIT: Also MUST be 3rd-person...not 1st-person like Oblivion and Fallout cos 1st-person melee combat is hard.

I said before. I would use TES as the base, add Bioware for their story and character development (Mass Effect/Dragon Age), Lionhead for bringing the people and mundane to life (Fable), and IO for interaction with things (Hitman). Also very open and free. Oblivion was more restrictive than Morrowind for example.
Pretty much this with FF7's world exploration and materia system excellence. Also there must be cuteness to make it perfect for me. Imagine FF9's style but translated into the above parameters. Like that. :3

Final fantasy (for the minigames and world) crossed with GTA (humour, level design, entertainment and gameplay depth), Alpha protocol (conversation choices, plot choices), mass effect (characters) and metal gear solid (gameplay). Basically an expansive sci-fi GTA set on an alien planet like Earth but different, with multiple sentient anthropoid races, with a theme park and deep minigames, with radio stations and vehicles and with meaningful narrative. The most important thing would be the setting. I'd get experts in various fields to consult or work on the game world. Biologists, anthropologists, linguists, architects, economists, psychologists, astronomers, physicists, geomorphologists... I think that's something games don't do enough of and game worlds have the potential to be brought to life culturally and physically much more so than they currently are.

I would make a Diablo style Action RPG with a sci-fi setting. There haven't been a lot of sci-fi Action RPG games and the ones that are out there so far haven't been that great. The story I'm totally lost on. I'd leave that up to someone else, but keep a close eye on it to make sure it's not too generic or crappy.

The only difficult part of this plan is making a game that has a good mix of ranged and melee weapons but this is something that can be overcome with more time for creativity. I would implement a weapon degradation system for higher difficulty levels that works, the one in Diablo II worked pretty well as long as you kept an eye on your stuff.

Instead of magic or "special powers" your character would gain skills like being able to hack locked doors and other electronics more efficiently, repair and modify their own weapons, improve combat and defense skills, and allow for other abilities to be granted but no Jedi mind trick stuff.

I'd like to incorporate elements from other Action RPG games that have gotten things right.

- Titan Quest had a feature that let you press different keys to filter out lower quality items dropped by enemies and Dungeon Siege II let you press one button to pick up all items, I would combine these features.

- Dungeon Siege II allowed you to level up you skills by using them making it easier to customize your character. I would do something similar to this or what Skyrim is going to do allowing you access to all of the skills in the game without having to pick a single character class and limiting yourself to a certain skillset.

- I would eliminate the corpse retrieval system used by Dungeon Siege II and Diablo II, I always found that to be annoying. There would still be a death penalty in the form of loss of experience but not money. That was another thing that always seemed stupid to me, especially late in the game when money pretty much becomes no object.

- Which brings me to another point, I would make sure that the currency stays relevant throughout the game. At a certain point in all of the other Action RPGs I've talked about so far money becomes irrelevant as the enemies drop all of the powerful weapons and armor you could want negating the need for money, even though you still continue to pick it up.

This could be achieved by putting in a worthwhile gambling system where you could play actual games of chance for worthwhile prizes based on how much you're willing to bet. Another thing that could be done is to allow for the purchase of extra skill points at a steep cost that goes up whenever you use it.

I'm sure there's stuff I'll think of later but this is all I can think of for now.

Take... The Shin Megami Tensei games, Ogre Tactics, the old final fantasy games, Bioware's best rpgs and bring them all together. I'm sure you'll either get something brilliant if you put all the best minds of the Persona series, Ogre Tactics, the main SMT series, and Bioware's best in one room.
Brgrfflrmmmm...
Sorry, I was just cleaning up the drool sporadically oozing from my mouth.
Now THAT is a game I'd like to see.

My personal dream team:
- Atlus would be put on graphical design duty, from monsters to characters.
- Square-Enix, however, would be the one putting everything into polygons, from cut-scenes to modeling.
- The music would be done by the trio of Kazuma Kaneko, Shoji Meguro and Yoshitaka Hirota.
- Bioware and Bethesda can work together to make everything feel a bit more 'open'.
- Atlus and Bioware can team up for dialogues and storylines.

The game would be lengthy,
contain enemies that can be brought to your side (and trained),
every enemy would be unique (no pallet-swapping),
has characters that possess both character-unique moves and customizable ones,
has puzzles and variable side-quests,
has a good chemistry between design, graphics, story and music to make a solid atmosphere,
and NOT make classical RPG mistakes (too much grinding, lost-forevers, etc.)

It is a game we'd all like to see. Sadly it might be so awesome it would cause a singularity and destroy reality as we know it. Still it is good to see someone with some sense. Now only if we could form an elaborate plan to kidnap these people to make the rpg to destroy reality.
