Real I would probably go with an owl, as I've wanted to raise a baby owl since I read Juniper as a kid. I would not treat it like a magical mail-man either for all you Harry Potter fans out there lol

Fantasy I would have to go with a Fire Lizard (http://pern.wikia.com/wiki/Fire_lizard) because while big dragons are very cool... what the heck would I feed it/where would I house it? Mini dragons = still awesome, but far more practical.
