If you could revive one extinct species, which would it be?

Dodos.

They may not be the most interesting of animals, but at least they are not massive fucking sharks or a killer reptiles. Seriously, why would you want to bring Megalodon back to life? Sharks are scary enough at normal size.

Dinosaurs, DUUUH! I mean seriously, is there ANY other answer?
Because 'dinosaurs' isn't a species? xD
But i'd have to say Compsognathus, mostly because it's one of the dinosaur species that wouldn't really pose much of a threat towards humans. I mean they're the size of a cat, and probably through careful breeding would make nice pets xD

Seconded on the Dodo.
Technically if we brought back the Dodo we have brought back a dinosaur. Seeing as birds are philogenetically dinosaurs.
We don't need sharks, they still exists in pretty awesome form, ditto with mammoths.
There's a good chance there's a lot of neanderthal DNA in alot of peoples genes, so no need for those guys.

Also the Dodo is just a big funny bird thats bound to take the internet by storm.

Third on the dodos as well - Our ancestors didn't understand the impact domestic animals gone feral had in exotic locales, but at least we can attempt to correct that problem soon.

Although, if I had to choose a creature that's been extinct for longer, I would go with one of the ground sloths. Have you seen how BIG one of these things used to be? And they probably will look like some sort of third-evolution Pokemon...

Plotanium, i see what you did there

I was going to say european bison but apeprently its only extinct here and they arent even in critical extinction classificaition. sigh.

I choose Megatherium [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megatherium]
from wikipedia:
Megatherium was a genus of elephant-sized ground sloths endemic to Central and South America that lived from the late Pliocene through the end of the Pleistocene. Its size was exceeded by only a few other land mammals, including mammoths and Paraceratherium.

This is basically a giant sloth bear with tongue of massive length!

They are vegetarians and not agressive so dont worry about your childrenz

I want to say moa, but I also like the thought of a triceratops to ride around.

If it came down to it though, I'd probably just bring back some obscure protazoa or bacteria or something that could very slowly take over and morph into something horrible that would infect humans and eventually cause a zombie apocalypse. Just think of the game Pandemic. Yissssss. I like the thought of this. And if I did bring it back, I'm fucking moving to Madagascar.

A lot of extinct megafauna keeps popping up in this thread... Which would probably not survive even a decade after bringing it back.

I'll probably go with Stephens Island Wren, because it was the only known flightless passerine, and how cool is that?

Would be a good idea to start off with murdering all the mammals on New Zealand and converting it back to bird country.

There are a lot of critically endangered rhinoceros, and considering how awesome of a species they are compared to their meagre numbers, I would definitely want to bring at least one subspecies back. There is no reason why these animals should be facing extinction; the fault is pretty much purely and directly human. I mean, there are a lot of species who have been killed off by humans before, but rhinos! If it had to be a rhino that's already extinct, I nominate the woolly rhinoceros.

Dragons.

Prove me wrong bitches!!! :D

I just love the idea of humans not being on top of the food chain anymore. It would be a good way to teach the world humility.

TRICERATOPS.

Because they look delicious.

Truth be told I don't really care as long as it's large, interesting looking, and has been extinct for long enough that no human has ever eaten one before!

Yeah... because we don't have drones with missiles and rifles that can shoot through several inches of steel. Don't get me wrong Dragons would also be a good idea, because I would love to eat one of them too!

Yangtze River Dolphins. Because Last Chance to See really got to me, alright?
Got to me too, I was really sad to learn that they are extinct in the wild despite the efforts put into saving them. Sadly bringing them back would just cause them to go extinct again due to the noise levels still making it uninhabitable for them. However according to what I could find with a short Google search there are still some left and their conservation status has been upgraded to critically endangered... still sad.

Also great book.

Honestly, any sauropod would be fine with me. they're huge, impressive, and unlikely to use a nearby human as a snack. Furthermore, they're largely agreed to have been gregarious, which means it may be possible to domesticate them and use them as beasts of burden (which, needless to say, would be too awesome for words to express).

The unicorn. They really existed according to North Korea, so that means I can have them back.
If I can't have my totally existed once unicorn, I'll go with pterodactyl. Who doesn't want flying lizards large enough to ride on??
