If you could design any game what would it be?

more specifically I mean like a core concept or an idea you have never seen done.

even more specifically I don't mean cross-overs (i.e. warcraft meets persona)

!!!!WARNING BORING (possibly generic) REASON FOR POSTING BELOW!!!!

I recently started my first Game Design course and they are asking me for 'my ideal game' which was essentially anything you could come up with that was interesting idea and then SURPRISE now its your project for the rest of the term. Anyway it got me thinking if anyone had any hidden gems for games you wish you could make.

My response would be a game where you are not the main character but you don't find out until the end when you realize you are a figment of the other guys imagination or even some kind of schizophrenic apparition or something.

They already did that, its called The Elder Scrolls.

The entire series is actually a dream of a being known as the godhead, you are just a figment of his imagination, along with everything else.

No that really is canon in the Elder Scrolls

the whole fact that the game is a dream is why our character can pause time when he opens menus, and come back from the dead using save-games, because you are a character in a dream, but you know it, thus you gain mastery of the dream.

A fishing game involving boss fish the size of Lost Planet bosses.
It would be interesting to say the least, especially when dynamite gets involved.

I guess making a JRPG of some sort since I could create my own mythology, world, heroes, villains... I'd have to make everything from scratch and I like JRPGs so of course there would be influences from those but if you think like that then every JRPG is a copy of the first one, which they're not.

Or then just a Pokemon MMORPG.
I have had great thoughts for a game like that since ages

Open world party based steampunk/fantasy pirate RPG with optional co-op where the other players control members of your party.

I'm in the same position for University.
But they own everything I make so so far I've just submitted a game about the demon king of cheese.
I've learned I can get my IP back so I'm gunna submit a game about space pirates.

I'd like to see an RPG as competitively viable as Pokemon. The main difference between this project and Pokemon would be that you play with your whole team out on the field, rather than having one team-mate out at a time with switch-ins. It would be something similar to Persona 3 and 4 in terms of combat.

There is a surprising amount of depth to be found in P3 and P4's combat. I had plenty of fun deciding when to buff, when to defend, managing resistances and weaknesses in personas and team composition, deciding on what to do on advantage (knockdown, debuff, status effect scenarios), and looking for safe times to commit to an offense. Battles, at least in higher difficulties, really came down to the strength of your decision making and ability to adapt. I never felt like my stats were carrying me through the game - which is damned great.

I think the strength of P3/P4's combat is why so many fighting game fans like myself also love Persona. And this audience may be why Persona 4 Arena is a thing! :D

But other than that, I have no idea what the setting, story and whatever of the game would be. I just know I want something as competitively viable as Pokemon with a combat system similar to the modern Personas.

mount and blade: the new world, is basicly what it comes down to.

you own your own ships, which are maintained individually, just like the soldiers who man them, and with it you make your mark in an alternate version of the 1600's pure M&B style.

who would buy that, honestly?

A game where you get to run through 19th Century London in the industrial revolution. You start out hiding in drugs dens, and on the streets, stealing and mugging to stay alive... but then you work your way, with hard work through the social structures (GTA style) to become a full aristocat, of the highest order...

The character has full moustache customisability... and there are various outfits to collect, of varying degrees of style, to fit in...

You can join the Navy, or be a Pirate, you can be a red coat, or join an outfit of thieves. (Read: Warring factions) You have to be careful at night due to the Jack the Ripper style killers wondering the streets!

You can steal a bike, (penny farthing :p) or a horse drawn cart, and tear through the crowded cobbled streets of London... or you can don you hat and can and the finest cloak, and whip beggers in the street to keep their hands from your pockets... Running away from the hilariously steryotypical coppers would be brill!

Also... not Steampunk... just 1800s!

Ah... dreams come true!

Here's a concept that's been bouncing around in my head for a while. A game where the main character rebels against being a game character.

He takes on various game designers, and all challenges are them screwing with their respective bits of the game. Level designer might make parts of the levels disappear or rearrange themselves, AI programmer might make the monsters more dangerous or unpredictable, graphic designer might mess around with colours and stuff like that. After each one is beaten, their part of the game becomes more primitive, until at the end, the main character takes on the lead designer. And then the player. Probably by fighting against the control scheme somehow.

Damn you SajuukKhar and your extensive Elder Scrolls lore knowledge, I miss when I thought The Elder Scrolls universe was like a quirky Middle Earth. Why you gotta be so damn interesting?
In seriousness though you deserve the title of a fucking scholar. After reading your posts and seeing just how in depth the lore is, all I can say is that I'm impressed. (Doubly so If you dont even need a reference before educating people).

OT: Fable done right would be my dream game. I dont get it though, the first game was a huge step forward, and then Lionhead just took titanic steps back in the sequels. I loved having actual skills Lionhead, I like progression. The Heroes Guild was a really interesting concept that you totally could have developed more in the sequels, I liked how the combat was somewhat challenging (Although the revive potions made it slightly too easy). I loved playing as my Hero as he grew up, if anything you should have let us spend more time in the child and teenage years so we could make more character and world altering decisions

Wide-open sandbox set in a fictional pastiche of ancient Mesopotamia. It should have communal survival elements, a working version of BethSoft's Radiant AI (think villages of dynamic quest-givers), and procedurally generated narrative.

...Hmm. Is this query supposed to cover things I'm not already doing?

This is a really good idea, and I'd certainly pay money to play a game with a concept like this as long as it was pulled off in the actual game design.

On a similar strain, I would have liked (if I had such the capacity) to design a game which would have focused on Sherlock Holmes in the GTA/LA Noire/Saboteur manner. Although I say LA Noire with a little bit of an uncertainty, as I wouldn't want each chapter of Sherlock Holmes to end up being a mission you select. I'd like it to be more fluid.

Playable as Holmes, it could be a proper grim representation of London, no sweetness behind each mystery - if there's been a murder, its brutal. I'd like the clue discovery to be different from LA Noire, perhaps with less of a guiding hand, and more of a verbal or visual clue which you can then lead from.

Of course, I'm someone who just has an over-active imagination and someone who perhaps could not work out all the fiddly aspects of how something would work, but I think it would be quite fun. You could explore London - so many side missions - and you could really do a specific grungy art style. So many people have taken Holmes and do something different with him. You could even do an American Mcgee touch on it. Dark and disturbing. But mysteries that pull you in.

Anyway, now I'm rambling. Just a few random thoughts.

I love the fact that you wrote that reply in exacly the same way I did... just thinking out loud! :p

It would also make an awesome game! I like your ideas of Sherlock Holmes... the only problem is that Sherlock Holmes stories always start in his living room somehow... It's a pretty big trait that should be inserted into the game...

Maybe that could be just down to the main missions... and then like in Arkham City, other stories can be persued when you come across them on the map...!
