I tried this game out at a GameStop because I was curious about the end product. I wasn't too thrilled about how uninterested I was about the game, the "Special Move" KO that was the only way to win, pointless stages, and essentially looking like a bunch of Sandbags killing each other with Rest (if you've played SSBM or SSBB, you know what I'm talking about).
I chose to play as Jak, as I was convinced that he would be a "Speed-type" character, which are may favorites, compared to Kratos, who was obviously a "Power-type," Big Daddy was a "Heavy-type," and Pappa Rappa was a "Light-type." The first thing I noticed were the controls: convinced that I was playing SSBB, I tried to press up on the analog stick to jump, but I needed to press X to do that, which cost me a few lives before I realized that. Second, the other face buttons were all designated Light, Mid, and Heavy attacks, each that provided about 4 separate attacks that corresponded with the analog stick. It was okay, but I wasn't what would work so I ended up spamming them until I found some moves that would be helpful. I wasn't able to grab, block/shield, dash or dodge throughout my gameplay, so I'm not sure it they are present.
I also got a hang on the "Super Meter" with builds up by the amount of pain that you dish out or if you collect these blue orbs that tend to fill your meter gradually. The amount of meter you build up allows you to perform various "Super Moves" that allows you to instantly KO any enemies that are caught in it. Jak's Level 1 Special consisted on him opening an Eco Vent (or elevator, I wasn't sure) that causes any enemies near him to be destroyed; his Level 2 Special turned him into Dark Jak and he pounced a short distance to create a shock wave that destroyed anyone caught in the blast. I couldn't get the Level 3 Special because I was being killed by the AI and apparently if you die, you lose some of your Meter. The weapons varied from Hedgehog Grenades to a Hammer from God of War (I think), and I didn't find them to be either helpful or a nuisance.
I ended up winning the match and I was left confused and a little stun. It wasn't bad, but the first thing that came to mind was how much better Super Smash Bros. was compared to this. I'm not taking Brawl or Melee, but the original title on the N64. It can hold its own to this day compared to Playstation All-Stars. That's another issue: how are the new Dante and Raiden from Revengence considered All-Stars if they haven't been released in their own titles yet? For that matter, why aren't Spyro and Crash in the initial roster? Can you imagine if Mario and Yoshi didn't appear in SSB? Bottom line, I tried it and I'm convinced that I won't be buying/playing this anymore.
