If you play a low difficulty, do you ever feel ashamed?

I used to play some Touhou games on Easy (got better since). I once, at someone else's insistence, played Dungeons of Dredmor on Easy and won. Did so after a winning run on medium, but still felt terrible.

...Which, I might add, is a stupid thing to do. I actively encourage playing absurdly hard games on lower difficulties so it's actually fun rather than infuriating. It's the better route to go, if you're having too much trouble with the normal difficulty. That said, I'm a big hypocrite.

I do feel horrible (except if its something I'm getting used to like a rhythm game) so that's why I always choose normal. Right smack in the middle.

If I've never played a game in the genre before, I may try the "medium" difficulty setting (as I did with the first Splinter Cell game). In that case, there were lots of new moves to learn, a whole lot of complicated button-mapping, and an entirely new interface. There was a learning curve. Thankfully the game provided a challenge throughout, even on the medium setting. Afterwards, I played through on "hard." I've since done this with all of the subsequent Splinter Cells (haven't played Conviction yet though). I've played all of the Metroid Prime Trilogy on the highest available-from-the-start difficulty level, because I absolutely love the challenge of those games (but don't get me started on Echoes). I don't see using an "easy" setting, honestly. Without a sense of accomplishment, why play a game (unless it's a drinking game)? I could see having an "easy" mode for younger players, but it just makes more sense to me to have them start out with a more simplistic affair, such as Naughty Bear.

Total Defluffication!

...seriously, though, I used to play the Doom games on God Mode and I always got bored after 5 minutes and went back to the frustrating, nail-biting thoroughly engrossing challenge of being able to die.

You said what I was gonna say. ;(

I find that when it comes to Rock Band and stuff, I sometimes feel a little sheepish if I'm playing guitar on Hard and everyone else is on Expert/Pro.. but then I'd rather play at a difficulty I'm comfortable with than embarrass myself with a difficulty I can't keep up with.

(I used the word 'with' far too many times there. ><)

This, absolutely.

Honestly who really cares? And though I realize that people can't seem to live without achievements these days, they just amount to a big pissing contest anyways. I play to have fun and if that means scaling back the difficulty setting to do so then I have no problems with it.

I don't feel guilty, I just often don't have any fun.

I used to think that Pharaoh was a game with tons of good ideas that just didn't gel into a cohesive and fun experience... until I actually decided to get off of Very Easy. Now, it's one of my favorite Economic RTS games.

I don't care. I play on whatever difficulty makes the game most entertaining to me. Why should I care that my skills at gaming might not be "up to snuff". It is my game, dangit, I will play it how I want too!

My issue was that with Crysis, I wanted to play on Delta, because I thought maybe it would make it more fun if they spoke Korean, but I didn't want to have my nuts in a vice.

About that "playing for fun, not for challenge" thing. Are you really having fun if you can just breeze through the game without any opposition? Doesn't it get boring when you never get to accomplish anything? I honestly can't figure out that way of thinking. It's like solving a crossword puzzle by looking up every word you don't immediately know from the solution.

I ussaly don't touch Easy with a ten foot stick unless the game rapes my backside savagely on any setting above. (Yes Im looking at you, Touhou!)

I generally play for the challange, not to have my enemies bow down and expose their necks for my sword.
yeah pretty much... I like to have enough faith in a games developers to think that normal mode is well balanced.. unless its a tom clancy game, in which case, reasistic all the way :)

I play on whichever difficulty I find most enjoyable. Sometimes Harcore, sometimes Beginner, sometimes somewhere in between. Really all depends on the type of game or number of playthroughs.
basically this.

i tend to play most games on easy-medium, just because i don't care to shit bricks of anger every time i play a game, thats not fun to me, that's just aggravating stubbornness

however, for some games that i really do enjoy, i turn it up to have some fun such as :

battlefront II, gears of war (1 and 2 and hopefully 3 when it comes out), kotor, mass effect 1+2, and borderlands occasionally.

otherwise it's nearly always on easy, just because its the most amount of fun with the least amount of stress, which i highly enjoy!

Well, I've never played a game on easy, aside from Oblivion, but that was because enemies kept getting more and more health while my stats were hard-capped at 100.
Eventually, even lowly cannon fodder easily took several power attacks, and stronger enemies barely even lost any health.
It just got incredibly annoying.
That was before I modded it though.

Also, I play on peaceful in Minecraft occasionally, when I'm just building shit while listening to some podcast.

Thoroughly depends on the game. I'll play hard mode on Ratchet and Clank in a heartbeat but I take no shame in being called a wuss by I Wanna Be The Guy my first time around.

^ Yep, pretty much exactly what BreakfastMan said up there. Because sometimes repeatedly getting the shit kicked out of you just isn't fun. And if a game isn't fun, why play it?

Wow not enough try hards in this thread, Easy/Normal mode is for pussies most of the time, Ramp it up to Hard/Extreme and then we'll talk.
herp derp because games are solely about competition and not about just relaxing and having fun, right, right?

nice one, there is a difference between trying your best and having fun and being "hardcore bro mode" and smashing your dignity to bits playing insane mode on every game.

It's not I'm trying to impress anybody. If I'm playing on the lowest/easiet difficulty, maybe it's because I want to get use to the controls, the gameplay, collect half of the collectibles, and know my way around the level/stage/area before I go to the hardest difficulty.

Not really. As long I get make proress it doesn't matter if I did use easy mde.
The only time when I did feel ashamed when I was desperate enough to use Super Kong in Donkey Kong Country Return. The game was too hard for me to use so I hate to let the blaste AI get throught the level.

I just get bored when I have to turn the difficulty down. It's never hard enough once you do that, and you miss out on achievements, like you've been doing it wrong somehow. I hate that feeling. I also get really annoyed when games have an easy mode that somehow "doesn't count" in the larger context of the game, like if beating the game on easy doesn't unlock anything new. It's like I just wasted my time.
