Mario from 25 years ago would like to say to his successors (aside Super Mario Bros 3) that they are all pussies for allowing you to save your progress rather than just hand you a single chance with 3 lives to make it through the worlds. Recently, I compared Super Mario Bros. with Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros Wii and, damn, is it hard or what?

[/quote]It might have been just me, but I didn't find that game difficult. The again, action games are kind of my thing in general.[/quote]

The Ninja Gaiden reference is to the old one for the NES, not for the Xbox

I'm so glad games are easier these days. I wouldn't be interesting in gaming if all games were as mercilessly hard as they used to be before they became more popular.

Fallout 2 isn't even that hard... It is just that Fallout 3 is pretty different and was created more for console gamers in mind. I beaten Fallout 2 and actually got my ass kicked on the hard difficulty in Fallout 3 but I may have beaten Fallout 2 on easy, I don't remember.

What other sequels have you played and then had your ass handed to you by their predecessors?

Did you have more fun getting annihalated or breezing through?

And do you know any series that have worked the opposite way?
Halo series.
Left 4 Dead 2 and Gears of War 2 are about the same as the first ones..
Mass Effect 2...it's easier cuz it's more of a shooter, but it's also a bit harder, cuz it's auto heal, and that game is easier with manual heal..plus the Level cap is 30 whereas ME1's level cap was 60. it's a lot harder considering you don't level as much, so there isn't as much to help you in the long run. Hardcore is actually hard...Hardcore on ME1 was easy...Hardcore in ME2 sucks royally in comparison...dropping 30 levels...bullcrap..
I'm halfway through ME2 on Hardcore at the moment and yes... it's very challenging.

The only part that really frustrated me so far was fighting the two Scions together on the colony rescue mission.

Those ground pounding attacks are beyond cheap.
I find ME2 harder outside of the lack of mako. In Mass Effect it was more about leveling up and hwat powers you chose, while I feel ME 2 it is more about shooting game ability. I'm not sure if I coulud actually beat ME2 on insane... but I did in ME I think using an adept that i replayed the game with or was it my soldier I did it with. I don't remember, but let's fact it ME had one strategy that worked even on insane I think, spam immunity, lol.

They weren't really hard though...most of us could beat many of them as children. They just had different mechanics, such as higher gravity or weird/lack of physics. Once you were used to them, you could beat just about any game because they all worked in similar fashion. But looking back on them by the standards of today's games, yes, they are crazy hard.
Yeah, I'm new enough to gaming (only started gaming PROPERLY when I was 12, about 8 years ago) to have started on games with more forgiving difficulty levels. When I try to play games which are older than 10 years or so I find most of them impossibly hard with only a few exceptions. I suppose if I'd grown up with the really old games I could have a different perspective on the whole thing.

Even in spite of the difficulty though I dislike older games for many other reasons, however that's a different topic. :)

A reason a lot of NES games may have been so hard were bad CAMERA angles. What do I mean by that? I mean the fact that even though the games were 2D a lot of times a an obstacle or enemy off screen would end up killing your character. For instance, I think the Megaman games took advantage of this a lot of difficulty in areas such as where you're falling and spikes could instantly kill if you choose the wrong way to fall.

Metal Gear 1 & 2 are damn near impossible. Everything on the PS onwards is easy in comparison.

Total Annihilation, I have a AI mod on it too, but struth, that game rushes and kills me on Easy!

Once I get a good resource income I can become unstoppable, but getting there is like wading through syrup!
The AI on this game can be really tricky.Once i was playing on hard and they scarcely attacked me so I was alone building my huge army and when finally it was time to attack....Boooommm nuclear strike -_-

I think the original Ratchet & Clanks were harder (especially number 1) than the "Future" trilogy.

Star wars jedi knight 2: jedi outcast is a so nuch harder then jedi acadamey, but that maybe because you don't get your forces powers untill about the third stage and it had a lot more enemies with weapons the lightsaber couldn't block.
This. Also I will add that JA had tons of one hit kills and combos that you could spam that had little to know drawbacks that made the game far too easy. I only found it challenging on higher difficulties but only because every enemy took a million hits to die and you took only a few.
JO did a much better job with it's one hit kills, leaving you vulnerable for a second to attack or having a button sequence that needed to be timed perfectly to execute.

Alright then, I haven't got anything to play until the 9th. I shall take your challenge of Ghouls and Ghosts

[sub][sub]I'm worried people might think I'm a masochist for playing all these hard games[/sub][/sub]
After that, try Demon's Souls

It's Jak 2 for me. It wasn't overlly hard, but it had it's share fare of cockblockers. Jak 3 in comparison, had one place where I was stuck, and only due to the wonky veichle physics.

Well, Mgs1 was HARD! Mgs2 was soo easy, Mgs3 was easy but still hard lol, and Mgs4 if you're playing on a decent difficulty it will challenge you.

BTW Fallout 1 was very easy in comparison to fallout 2, fallout 3 was too easy, seems like they don't know how to make a survival game, enemies shouldn't have that ridiculus amount of health (later in the game some enemies are like shooting at a brick wall for several hours), it shouldn't be like that, in a true survival game enemies should die from tops 2 shotgun shells in the chest, but ammo shouldn't be found everywhere, right now my fallout 3 character has over 20.000 caps and 1000 shotgun shells and I never use melee, they fucked up in making a survival game, it's a fps shooter!
