If you were only allowed to play one game for the rest of your life...

So say it turns out we all live in the Matrix, and our machine overlords come to you and announce that they will rewire your reality such that every time you ever play a game in the future, it will be the exact same game (though it will always be the latest, most up-to-date version of that game, even if it's updated after your restriction).

But because they are so very magnanimous, they will allow you to choose the game. Note that you don't have to constantly play the game; you can just stop, if you want, you just can't ever play any other game. You cannot play with any mods or new skins or other third-party modifications, but you can play any content that is created with tools provided with the game as it ships (so custom maps, custom items, etc.). Also (thanks to Lucyfer86 for reminding me!) you get all official expansions and DLC to the game in question, if you want.

Multiple games in a series count as one if and only if they are narratively tied together and form a cohesive whole such that they are somewhat incomplete without one another, so the Mass Effect or Half-Life series count as one game each, but Civilization IV and V count as two separate games. Yes, there is some gray space here, but try to keep on the side of narrative cohesion.

Other than that, the game(s) must have been completed and released to the public before no later than December 30th, 2012, so no waiting for "a game that includes all other games".

Which game would you choose to be the only game for the rest of your life?

Meh, i don't want to say WoW, but that game is a real time sucker so it would be solid choice, or maybe Guild Wars 2, dunno how great it will be tho.

Other might be Mass Effect series (must have all dlc included!).

I actually asked my brother this yesterday. We both agreed that a good choice would be GTA4.

The Thief series is certainly my favorite, and and if I also had access to mods that would probably seal the deal.

Although I am tempted to go with Minecraft, there's always more to do in Minecraft and you can never really finish it.

I'm just wondering if the Elder Scrolls series would count as 'one game', since the storyline links together, even from Arena.
If not, then probably Oblivion. I haven't played it, but from what a friend of mine has said, it's quite the enjoyable RPG romp, especially with all the DLC and stuff. (Sheogorath FTW!)

Probably Spore. I'd cry-myself to sleep for the first months not being able to play Civilization or any Nintendo game though...

I think I'd be better off for it though. At least I'd have fond memories of those games.

I would choose Spore, because of how much time I've been able to put into the game. It would give some pretty endless fun. I mean... it wouldn't be the top tier of fun, but it would last awhile.

That shouldn't count. You could say the same for Fable, or Metal Gear Solid, or even Zelda, or pretty much most franchises.

I'd pick Oblivion two, but has to be with mods, that way the possibilities become literally endless. That or the Sims 3.

Oblivion two? Are you referring to Daggerfall or Skyrim?

I'm not quite sure whether you mean "oblivion: two, as in a sequel" or "oblivion two, as in... Elder Scrolls: 2"

Either way, Any of the Elder Scrolls are a great pick.

Definitely Morrowind. I've put hundreds of hours into that game and I'm sure I haven't seen everything. And even once I have, I can make completely different character types and do it again.

And I never get tired of the theme song.

Minecraft.

And eventually I would build a computer inside Minecraft on which I could play all the other games.

I would have to say Red Dead Redemption. I could spend half of that remaining lifetime just walking the prairie and picking flowers and not get bored, not to mention throwing in the actual story and other options.

Perhaps he/she was just being silly and typed 'two' instead of 'too'? Or maybe we live in a sad world where the only Elder Scrolls game people talk about is Oblivion...

Probably the latter...

Umm... I'd go read some books instead. Then find a new hobby.

No one game could keep my interested for the rest of my life, no matter how good it is.

Basically this. or Wow or minecraft or something, but I certaintly won't be playing games (if at all) under the circumstances. Which will make me sad, as games for me are the best way to tell a story.

Dwarf Fortress

+1 for Zhukov, I already read and play sports more than games these days... I would probably just end up using my ridiculously expensive gaming PC for work *shudders*
