Fallout, no doubt. Aside from a particularly terrible spin-off title, the whole series has been pretty great. Even though I think the story and writing in 3 in general was kinda suckish, the game is still really fun to play.

Spiritual successors? So if I said Doom I could have Halo, CoD >3, Serious Sam, Quake, etc, etc, etc, etc?

:p

Keep it reasonable, ey?

I'd go with Command and Conquer. I like Fallout 3/NV (spiritual successor to Borderlands? Huh? Huh? ;P), I like Mount and Blade, I like.. Quite a few games. King Arthur the Roleplaying Wargame, Total War.

Command and Conquer just manages to go from fun to weird and wonderful whilst still keeping the same feel. Generals was grand fun, especially with unlimited super weapons. Carving your name into a turtles base with particle uplink cannons was hilarious. Zero Hour made it easier, yet harder. Money was slightly more easily acquired for the Chinese, various techs, all that. But that just means armies were bigger, were hitting more often and it could be hell against a decent player.

Then we have Red Alert 3.. Transformers vs parachuting polar bears vs.. Allies. TBH I didn't play them much, parachuting polar bears and transformers were much more fun. And having Akira available for play is pretty cool.

Or there's Total Annihilation>Supreme Commander, combined with mods those games are grand.

I only recently worked out the answer to "what CD", what game may take a while. But C&C in the meantime.

EDIT:

Can't seem to spell tonight

Second Edit:

I lied, Europa Universalis III is greater than C&C. KA: TRW and TW are greater too. So toss up between EU III, King Arthur and Total War.

Total War
Plenty of games, a decent amount of variety and challenge. I do enjoy the mix of RTS and turn-based. It's successful enough to keep the installments coming.
Check out King Arthur: The Roleplaying Warame by Neocore Games.

They teamed with Paradox Games for a while (The brilliance of EUIII, Victoria, Hearts of Iron) and will be releasing a sequal soon.

It's like Total War in the Arthurian mythos. Same type of game play, but with heroes (Not as bad as Warcraft 3 heroes) and a fun setting. If you like TW, you should like this series.

Super Mario Brothers. Obviously. Yeah, sure, the basic mechanics haven't (and probably never will) change significantly, but there is enough change with each iteration to keep it interesting.

Grand Theft Auto.

It's the most freedom I can think of in a game. They just need to add in some superpower cheats.

If the evil genie Hypothetical appeared and told you bad news champ, you are limited to one game series forever. Its the only thing past present and future you can play.

Rules. Mainly numerical equals but spiritual successors count to, systemshock--->bioshock

So what do you go for? Sports game like Madden that's pretty much guaranteed to get "new" iteration every year but with little change? Do you go for a massive series with lots of content, like Final Fantasy, or Mega Man?

I am leaning towards Zelda...but I reserve the right to change my mind after others make me feel silly for forgetting something awesome.

Remember you must look to the future as well to gauge how much content will come and how often.
You're breaking your own rules. The genie's going to want your answer on the spot, so you're not going to have a chance to get feedback.

My answer is from a line in one of my various playthroughs of Dragon Age II, in which my heavily-armoured and pretty gruff-looking warrior spouted "I think I've decided...THIS!"This quote may be a bit off, but it gives the gist. I hit Platinum in about two weeks, and have been working at other games since. before punching the enemy in question square in the face (in this case, the genie).
So I suppose that means I'm sticking with the Dragon Age IP. Or dying due to punching a genie in his stupid face. Luckily, I happen to enjoy said IP. Death would release me from such an absurd bargain. Win-win, I guess.

Reserving the right to change my mind, I'd probably go with Minecraft. I mean, it's only one game and I've never played it before, but it'd be the most likely thing to keep me enthralled for the rest of my life.

Conditions, though:
-I have to be allowed to take challenges from random forums as for what I should build.
-Multiplayer enabled, and the forumers who gave me suggestions can help out on my structures.
-I get some screen-video recording software like Fraps so I can show off for Youtube.

Final Fantasy would have to be my choice then, even if the later installments haven't been very good, the older stuff is still very much worth handling.

MegaTen.

Everything inside the franchise counts. Why? Because in the English localizations, they slap Shin Megami Tensei on all of it. Digital Devil Saga, Persona, Devil Summoner, everything.

[sub]Plus the main-series titles aren't half bad either, from what I've seen.[/sub]
I'll have to go with this, but mainly the Persona series though.
