For two reasons:
1) Too many new people were coming in all at once trying to rerail this place when it's been derailed for hundreds of pages.
2) Many of the threads that go past 1,000 pages get sunk so as to not discourage those who want to make new ones.

There's actually been quite a few people trying to rerail lately. Is there usually about 2 or 3 per week?
Aw...c'mon guys, a little rethreading never killed us....well, perhaps that ONE time, but that is an exception.
