@Steppin: They were zombies and he is one of the only ones that knows their weakness. In the story his shadow was taken by the master of the island and implanted in a zombie and now he couldn't live in the sunlight otherwise he'd die. So what happened was he found his way back the the island five years prior and destroy much of the Zombie army before being forced to leave the island before he was killed...again.
