I think I'd show him/her my copy of "The wild parrots of telegraph hill". If I come up with something else I'll post that too.

You know those video games you like to play? Well in your life your the hero and when you die there is no restart button and the game over screen appears and you can never play again, so don't go dying.

Now leave my room and next time you wake me up early I'm showing you the game over screen early.

(Child) "Daddy, what is death?"

(Me) "Well my child, death is when one ceases to be alive. Every memory that existed inside of their head is lost forever. Death is the end of your existence. After death, nothing will ever matter to you anymore."

(Wife) "Honey!"

(Me) "Oh, I mean... uh... Death is when you become an angel... yeah. That's what happens.

I'd say:
"We're no strangers to love baby,
you know the rules and so do I.
Don't you know what I'm dreamin' of,
you wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just want to tell you how I'm feelin',
try to make you understand.
Never gonna give you up!
Never gonna let you down!
Never gonna run around and hurt you!
Never gonna make you cry,
never gonna say goodbye. etc."

Or, if I wasn't feeling like an asshole:

"Death is the cessation of life, wherein all we are becomes nothing. It is to be without senses, thoughts, or consciousness. It is also nothing to fear. When the mundane human faces the encroaching darkness of death and the undoing of all we humans have achieved; he/she will either cower before it or passively accept it. It takes a great human to look into the face of doom and tell it to go fuck itself. Yes, the end of all approaches even now, rest assured that neither Heaven nor Hell nor blasted Purgatory exists to accept you. No deities rule above us and no daemons scheme beneath us.

Do not fear the darkness for it is no deterrent to a happy human. At the end of things, you will become nothing, the very same lack of a place that you came from. If you do as one free ought to then, when doom takes you, it will be a sad instant but not one nearly powerful enough to outweigh a thousand joyous instants before your doom."

Death is a bit like the end of a good book. You're sad that it's over but you enjoyed the time. After the end, the story might go on, but no one reading can see it since it isn't in the book.

Depends on the age of the child.

It's when something stops living. It's when a body or a brain has something so wrong with it that everything shuts down.

It's straight forward and honest enough, I think. I'm not sure what I'd say when asked on the spot, I thought about that a little.

Your body is like a car that's constantly running. As it gets older, it has a chance to break down. Sometimes you can replace the parts and it'll work again, but sometimes it's beyond repair.

me and my dog said:
If you don't have children then pretend you do for this. Don't talk as if your explaining it to a regular person. Talk as if you were speaking to a child who has no idea what death is.
When you are no longer aware of your self.

Well if I was a complete dick and didn't care about my children, it would go a little like this...

On my child's birthday...

Me: "Son, I want to teach you something today"

Son: "Yeah dad?"

Me: *whips out a carcass of a dead animal* "Do you see this right here? Every year you get older you just get closer to this" *points at dead animal

And that would be my dick answer. I'm satisfied with just giving that answer too.

"It's when you cease to live." Hopefully they'll be distracted from asking further questions. The word 'cease' is pretty hard to figure out, after all.
