Now I am going to assume that most if not all people on this site are at the very least a little versed in videogames but many people are not and so I was just wondering if anyone else has been asked strange questions about videogames or been faced with something bizzare and obviously untrue (except maybe on a very very very low level) as fact.

The other day I was asked by my boss "so er how do you actually finish a videogame and how long does it take?" I was a little stunned by the question as hes only 33 and I thought surely he knows videogames vary just like board games and card games (only more so) etc and there are different rules for each one one and time can obviously differ due to various circumstances. I tried to explain this to him but I just got a blank stare (hes not too bright so he does that a lot) so I just reworded and said it finishes when you get to the end or turn the game off and it usually takes about one playthrough in times length (again blank stare though not unexpected this time).

Another time I was talking to someone who engaged me in conversation and at the time I was playing Valkyria Chronicles I mentioned this as it came up only to be met with oh thats like Pokemon isnt it. I said no it isnt maybe you are thinking of another game anyway he insisted he had got the right game so I asked him ok how is it like pokemon and he said well its turn based isnt it I said yes it is and? and that was it, its turn based so its like pokemon er ok if you say so dood.

Another common one I find is if a game has the same publisher all games with that publisher are made by the same people I dont know how people got that idea but I come across it a lot.

I have come across more where I just thought wtf but these are the ones that stick in my mind anyway has anyone else had any discussions like this or come across any such opinions? anyone?

New boss, new office,
now I have gaming tattoos and the other day he noticed two that I have
(Assassin's Creed Logo left wrist, Mass Effect Paragon Logo right wrist)
He asked what they were and to keep things simple I just said that they were logos from my two favourite gaming series.
He nodded, looked at them again, then said
?So you finish a game and get a tattoo??

I despair (And he earns three times what I do? the guys a moron!)

I sometimes deal with "Pokemon is bad now, the Pokemon all look bad now, face it Generation 1 was the best and all we need"

And I know by fact they only looked at vanilluxe which almost no one likes.

It's this sad mentality that in a world with Pokemon as Animals, only 151 species can be alive. That's impossible AND it's missing a shit ton of species. We didn't even get a SQUIRREL until generation 4. A DEER since generations 2 and 5. A PENGUIN in generation 4. A MONGOOSE in generation 3.

I know it's world is fake but the logic that animals with super powers living with us in a future earth with the entire world running the way it does here needs even more than 649 Pokemon to run it.

For future reference the easiest way to answer that question is:
Depends on the game. Some games take 2-5 hours, others can take 40-80+ hours, and there are even some games that are never "finished". That is how I always answer the question and it always works. Then they may proceed to ask about either the "short games" or the "unfinishable games" just name a couple examples for the short games like Mario Party, CoD, etc. For the unfinishable ones ALWAYS use WoW. (They will have at least heard of it) Then mention it is just a world to run around and talk to people in and do quests together. Don't over complicate it, they don't care.

For me, it is "What level are you on?" wanting a number. I like saying my characters level if playing an RPG. Tell them "57" and watch them be stunned.

My dad thinks that all video games are "Mario tapes" and that the reason why he can't "get on to check his fantasy football" is because his computer is full of them. Other than that, I'd say most people in my life are pretty familiar with video games on one level or another.

I was trying to explain the concept of "Gold Farmers" in MMOs to my wife and I think I blew her mind. She had a hard time wrapping her head around people paying money to bypass parts of the game, and I suppose the criminal element involved in shady online transactions. She tried to care about it, but just could not summon the energy I suppose.

"How do you win? What's the goal? What level are you on? Are you winning? Are those real people?"

It's pretty interesting to see the mentality of someone who doesn't know anything about games when they're presented with one. It really shows you how much developers take for granted in some cases when creating games.

Does get really damn annoying after a little while though...

"All you ever seem to do in most games is hide behind stuff and shoot shit[footnote]I assume they were not being literal.[/footnote]."

I was playing Mass Effect 2 at the time. It's kind of funny to me considering the more action packed route the series started taking. I couldn't really be bothered to correct them though, as it was said in the tone of voice that suggested "So why are you even playing it?"

Please put at on Not Always Working sometime.

OT: I don't really have to put up with this, as my family and frends are big gamers too. That said, I both dread and look forward to the day when I meet someone like this so I can hand them a copy of Spec Ops and just say "educate yourself".

I don't know, I would have said that as a playful/terrible joke.

OT: not gaming related but one time I was at my aunt's house and her parents were both there. They're from Vietnam and live somewhere in the states now. There was this movie on the TV and her father asked me if the characters were rednecks. They weren't, they were just white, not that he said this out of racism. I just don't think he knows what a redneck is.

I also talked with someone who thought Nintendo was the one who made the Sony Playstation (actually made it, mass manufactured) that was a fun conversation.
I think I remember reading that Nintendo and Sony were going to make a CD based console together at some point before the Playstation came around, but I think there was some falling out between them. I don't know. It's been a long time since I last read that article. I could be wrong.

I also heard from my brother that the mascot for that console ended up becoming the final boss in Playstation All-Stars. Not sure if he's right or not.

You remember correctly. Sony and Nintendo did indeed partner up to produce a cd-rom add-on for the SNES, similar to the Genesis/Mega Drive and the Sega CD. I don't know why, but this idea was eventually abandoned, though Sony did come up with a stand-alone console called the Play Station that would be compatible with existing SNES titels and also play games using the SNES-CD format. However, due to licensing issues with Sony, Nintendo broke up their alliance and turned to competitor Phillips instead.

In the end, the Phillips SNES cd add-on never materialized, while Sony continued developing its console independently, resulting in the original Playstation and Nintendo getting bumped off the number 1 spot (in terms of market share) for the next two console generations.
