Well after Guinness World Records came up with the 'Top 50 Console Games Of All Time' early this year it appears that IGN has decided to take upon the undertaking of compiling the top 25 consoles of all time. http://www.ign.com/top-25-consoles/index.html

Its hard to make a list like that,you have to individually see every console in relation to the time it was released and the influenced it had on the market i guess.
I bet the SNES will be the number one,like on most list.This or the Atari.

really, IGN is really not people i trust when it comes to lists and reviews. the only thing i like about them is the "Daily" Fix and the Strategize.

judging by most of the consoles on the lower part of the list (except the PS3 of course), it looks like they are judging them for their shittyness.

I suspect the Dreamcast will be at 10, the Wii and PS2 will be in the top 5 and either the NES, SNES or Genesis will be #1.
Though the Atari 2600 could change that.

And... judging this is pretty hard as each generation is technically better than the previous one.

Sony PS2, yes definitely has to be somewhere at the top, I agree wholeheartedly with that.

The PS3 however, has to be ranked lower than 15. Speaking as a PS3 owner (and clearly not a fanboy)I find that I use the damn thing 75% of the time to watch movies and 20% of the time as book stand and that is a travesty for a console.

Besides it's like it said on the main page.

Each console on the list ahead was selected for its influence on the industry and the gaming culture as a whole, with special consideration for their benchmark titles, peripherals, monetary success, and total hardware sold.

On those grounds the PS3 had no chance of cracking the top 10

PS2, N64,NES and PS1 for the top 5/10 I guess. I'll say the PS2 for Top 1, cause it's the most sold console evah, and it still sells as much as todays console generation.

All I know is the IGN boards will end up in a blaze of glory, I mean, massive flame war. As it usually does. It's a situation where everybody thinks the oppositional view is deliberately out to destroy their fun.

That said, I'd expect the SNES to be ranked pretty high along with the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, as well as the PS2, but the PS1 and N64 may well make appearances as well.

I'm not surprised this list doesn't count handhelds because there it gets iffy because Nintendo dominated the handheld market for 20 years and buried the competition. The PSP is the only one that hasn't been buried because it's not like the Atari Lynx requiring tons of batteries. This generation was ready for a non-Ninty handheld and I suppose it does what it does well for the people whose needs it suits.

No poll can truly judge what's the best console, half of these I was too young to play. The mere idea of a Top 25 Consoles of All Time is just mind-boggling.

This is bullshit. How many consoles have there ever been anyway? We're in the 7th generation of consoles and let's say there's an average of 5 consoles for each, that makes 35... Even if it's more like 50, the top 25 isn't much of a *Top*, just the upper half...

That's quite true, I might reconsider the PS2 coming on top. Nintendo, at least by IGN's reviewing criteria has met almost all their standards. Except for maybe dying slowly.
