I've totally not seen most of the films on that list. I guess that means i'm not a sci-fi person. >_>
Whether or not you've seen them is not the test to see if you're into Sci-Fi, the test is to watch some of them and see if you like them. If you enjoy (for example) A New Hope, Planet of the Apes (the original), and Back to the Future then you might just like the genre as a whole, and you might want to consider placing the others on your "must watch" bucket list.

Could someone tell me what makes "A Clockwork Orange" science fiction?
It's about fictional science techniques, that'd be my guess.
I didn't pick up a "dystopian future" vibe like the other guy did but i guess that could be another reason.
That's certainly another thing to add, thanks :)

Never seen district 9, probably should, too lazy. List is overall good, save that 2001 is rubbish and I don't care who says otherwise, and the list has insufficient Dune.
What? I can tolerate you not liking 2001, but the Dune movie us abysmal. The characters were shit, the exposition ham handed, and action scenes travesties.

Star Ship Troopers is much better, also in the "acclaimed director adapts a classic novel with a big budget" category.

The Empires Strike back and A New Hope are Star Wars. A New hope which on IGN was listed as just Star Wars but It talked only about A New Hope.
Ah, yeah I was looking for the words "Star Wars" in there, not the sub-titles. I am an idiot.

Not sure why so many people hate Avatar all that much. It's dumb, but it's beautiful.
While true, these are the best 25 sci-fi films EVER. That means they should be fucking amazing, not mediocre with pretty effects.
The problem is: ARE there 25 Sci-fi movies that are "fucking amazing" and not just pretty? I'm not trying to defend pretentious drivel like Avatar, I'm just having a difficult time coming up with 25 sci-fi movies that kick ass throughout the entire movie.

IGN? Now that's a damn fine list with some flaws like one. Where's my Starship Troopers?

I was wondering that myself. I guess it's got the whole "dystopian future" vibe that happens in so much sci-fi, but other than that there's really no sci-fi elements that I can think of.

I have never cared for the second terminator film, I don't know why it always makes it onto "top sci fi" lists
It's more because of the level of influence the movie has more than the quality of the film itself. It's certainly a good sci-fi movie, but I wouldn't rank it top 25 on artistic merit. That one movie has influenced popular culture and just about every sci-fi movie since then to a staggering degree though.

Edit: Woops, double post.

Have to say there's a few movies, like 'Jurassic Park' and 'The Thing' that I don't really see as 'sci-fi'.

Also, Star Wars TESB/RotJ > ANH.
Jurassic Park is fully functional sci-fi. The whole "cloning dinosaurs from preserved amber" thing falls firmly in the science fiction area, even if it's not set in the future.

As for the Star Wars movies, you're right in that the latter movies are of higher quality, but neither of them are as fondly remembered, nor have the same level of influence as the original Episode IV.

I was more meaning that i'm not a Sci-Fi movie guru.

Wow. A Top 10 [Insert Genre Here] Movies list that is comprised primarily of movies I've not only heard of, not only actually seen, but also agree for the most part with their placement within said list!

Brazil and Alien (not (s), mind) is fucking amazing. What's important here though is that Avatar is not even close to fucking amazing.

Shame you didn't like 2001 or A Clockwork Orange; you still have to admit that they are deserving of their spot though.
Yeah, I'm not one to confuse personal preference with universal truth (*hint hint, wink wink, jab jab* at some people). If enough people give something praise, I usually check it out. Often, that works out great for me, as it's how I discovered The Wire, Mad Men, Being There, and lots of other works. If I don't like it, then I just say it wasn't tailored for me and it happens sometimes.

I can most definitely see the artistic greatness in A Clockwork Orange, but I just can't stand watching that movie. It's effective in it's goal, I guess. So much so that I felt disgusted at myself for watching it.

I refuse to pay attention to IGN's "Top #" lists after the STUPID decision to have Bowser as #2 in the "Top 100 Video Game Villians" and friggin' GLaDOS as #1. That's so bullshit! Ask most anyone in the world who Bowser is and they'll at least know that he's a weird turtle thingamabob. Ask someone who GLaDOS is and they'll think "....someone who's glad?" Bowser was there from the beggining, Bowser always had our princess in another castle.

DAMN YOU IGN!!

Anyway, raging aside, that's a pretty good list. I'm going to have to add some of them to my Netflix Queue as I'm catching up on all the classics I've missed out on.
