Before I clicked on this I thought 'if Empire Strikes Back isn't number one then I refuse to acknowledge it's existence'. The fact that it comes below A New Hope is just downright insulting!
I agree, somewhat, but I understand why IV gets more love: it was the original. The start of the trilogy that came to define a generation of films and film-makers. Empire is a better story though.
Yeah, I totally agree. IV comes a close second, and VI just misses the mark for me.

E.T. is horror to you?
Those eyes, so big, always staring, always watching. The voice halting, droning, the moon, getting closer, falling, crushing. Pointing, he's coming for me... AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Was surprised, this is a good list, if only for recommendations of good sci-fi films to watch. Sure there's a few that should be higher/lower to me and ones that aren't on there that I'd put, but it's a solid list of good stuff. I think Return of the Jedi and THX-1138 should be on there though.

EDIT: Where the fuck is Tron? xD

Not too bad a list. Good to see that Brazil and Metropolis made it at least, so I'm happy.

That's actually not a bad list. I was fully expecting to flame it, but I think they're all good/great movies.

Not sure why so many people hate Avatar all that much. It's dumb, but it's beautiful.
While true, these are the best 25 sci-fi films EVER. That means they should be fucking amazing, not mediocre with pretty effects.
The problem is: ARE there 25 Sci-fi movies that are "fucking amazing" and not just pretty? I'm not trying to defend pretentious drivel like Avatar, I'm just having a difficult time coming up with 25 sci-fi movies that kick ass throughout the entire movie.
There certainly are at least 25. Hell you could probabl;y do a top 100 list without including Avatar. I even liked Avatar and I'd not put it in the top 25.

The plot of E.T. involves a horrid little space monster coming down to earth and enslaving a human child by stealing his life force by forming a parasitic psychic bond. He then attempts to infect humanity with his horrible space plague and then escapes his much deserved bullet riddled death by using his army of child slaves.

And then the rotten little thing flies off to its home world to report in and begin a full blown invasion.

Yeah E.T. Is a horror movie.

and Moon (The MOST brilliant Sci-Fi movie in the last decade)?
What is Moon about? What makes it so good? I've heard a lot about it but I've never gotten the opportunity to see it. Is it a real artsy piece or is it pretty accessible?

I disagree with two things. The first of these is that they list it as "A New Hope." It's just Star Wars, kids. The second is that Avatar is on this list at all.

But anyway, Blade Runner at number 1 is the best choice possible.

Well, none of my favourites are on it.

I didn't think Blade Runner was all that great. No chemistry between the lead actors kinda lets down what is supposed to be a romance. Still, the setting is realised very well.

Without ruining too much, Moon is about the near future, where fuel is harvested on the Moon. And rather than send hundreds of miners to get it, they send robotic factories/skimmers to do the harvesting, and one poor bastard to maintain the machines.

The movie begins with our main (And really, only) human character, as he prepares to go home after a 3 year contract. However, he gets sick, and things start going wrong...

I can't tell you anymore without ruining the entire thing. Its 15 bucks in BestBuy now (For BluRay!), so just go get the damn thing and enjoy.

EDIT: Its accessible. Its an Indy film, so its a bit artsy, but nothing too serious.

When the first have sex, Harrison Ford basically sexually assualts her until she says 'Fuck it, might as well enjoy it.'

Of course there was no chemistry.

From IGN (I know I know...)

--snip--

5 - The Empire Strikes Back
4 - Alien
3 - A New Hope
2 - 2001: A Space Odyssey
1 - Blade Runner
i think that is a pretty good list and picking the top 5 of anything is always tough, but i wouldn't put blade runner as number 1. empire strikes back is my number one.
