It's supreme not sepreme. And that doesn't change my argument. Which is that if you put forward semantics in court you would still be found guilty of committing an illegal act. The precise wording for that illegal act really has no bearing on the matter.

That doesn't make it legal, but it does stop it from being theft. Copyright infringement is, I think, what you would be charged with.

Just because it's not called theft doesn't mean it's legal. If you were taken to court for downloading or distributing massive amounts of copyrighted material and when in court you said. 'It's not theft' I would like to see that hold up. Because call it whatever you want it's still not legal. As in that excuse won't fly you're still going to jail, therefore meaning it did not hold up in court.

I believe that while copyright is legitimate, it is also immoral.
Once something is sold, it no longer belongs to you, and without prior agreements, you no longer have any say in what happens with said sold item.
On the other hand, I believe Trademark IS ethical, as it does not allow individuals to own ideas, it simply gives credit to the original creators of said sold item.

Yes, that's right: I imagine a world without copyright, where the craftsman must create new things to continue earning money.
And thus technology and culture would advance continually, and the uncreative would be...phased out.

I don't borrow games/cds/dvd from friends nor do I buy them used. Personally I am against used sales and I never bother borrowing things, I just buy them. Also, I'm pretty sure that artists do get something from CD sales as this is how they make most of their money. It is gigs they get next to nothing for; sure, they get paid but they pay for their own set so if it is an expensive set, they are actually losing money.

You are against used sales? Buying something like a used chair does not deprive the furniture store of a sale, nor does buying a used CD deprive a record label of a sale. Sure they WANT you to buy new, but the reality is that new sale never existed.

I applaud you for supporting what you enjoy, but used sales are a vital function of any economy. The used merchandise market actually helps circulate money, create jobs AND reduce piracy because some people (myself included) buy, sell and trade many used or reduced priced goods instead of pirating.

It is theft, yes, but it isn't destroying the music industry. The music industry was already dying before the downloading rage started. In fact, file-sharing has even given an impulse to CD sales. People who download a lot are often also the people who buy more CDs.

Precisely, if you want it, you get it somehow.

I know many people who have only got CDs, games etc. because they first pirated it or its sequel. Those who give you money are also those that steal from you most. So it's 50/50 and everyone still gets paid enough and everyone still gets their music/ other media in the end, the current system works, and it gives lawyers something to moan about other than other, better paid lawyers.

Artists get paid to do something that they love. I think that is a privilege in itself. In my opinion, musicians and the like shouldn't be making any more money than say, garbage men or police officers, who have to take ten times the crap and get a tenth of the money or recognition.


That said, I really don't think that software pirates (yarr) are doing it out of any kind of moral outrage or principles. If people could anonymously kill each other over the internet, most people probably would do it just because they can.

I don't illegally download music, if you respect the artist that made the music enough, and want them to earn the money they deserve for making the music for you and all of their other fans, you'll buy it for full price. It kills me to see people just taking music that took a lot of time and money to create for their own personal convenience instead of just buying it.

I feel that I should be able to sample the goods I'm buying.

There aren't many places out there that let you listen to an entire CD before purchasing it. I'm not going to rush out and buy a CD just because I like a song or two. I want to make sure the whole thing is good.

There have been a few times where I've pre-ordered something(because I already know I'll love it, as I'm an avid fan of said band), and found a leaked copy. I don't see the problem with that as I've already purchased the product, it just hasn't been released.

Then there was also the time I was given a link to download a CD about 3 months before it came out by the bands manager himself. I felt it was ok to download it because I already pre-ordered the material anyway.

I can safely say I've never downloaded something, decided I liked it, and not bought it. I've also never kept music that I've downloaded but didn't think was for me. I support the bands I like by buying their merchandise and music.

Do I think piracy is wrong? Nah.

Make something good, and people will buy it. Give an incentive to buy it. Something you cant get from a download(which is kinda tough these days). Or, just make a good product for once.
