I'm a fairly conservative guy, but I am still flabergasted by people who think gay is a choice

I have had a few friends that are gay or transgendered or both and had talks with them about the human condition and such. And so I convinced gay is not a choice.

I bring this up because my girlfriend just told me she is in a debate with a work friend who still thinks it is a choice. How could it be a choice? I mean logically being gay doesn't make sense. I mean on the down side you are degraded, belittled, and repressed by society. You are stigmatized and grudgingly accepted in most place that don't specifically cater to homosexuals. None of that sounds fun, but on the other down side you can take it in the butt and not get married.

The only real plus side I can see is that you can dress how ever you want, and if someone says you look gay, you can reply, "I know, isn't it great?"

Anyhow, what are your feelings on this?

What are our feelings on what, exactly?

1. Gay being a choice/not being a choice?

or

2. People who think gay is a choice?

People are ignorant and mistrustful of things they don't completely understand. That relates to absolutely everything. Human nature I suppose, if they don't need to think about lgbt issues, then they'll come to an easy, ill-informed decision

It's still not proven why some people are gay (I don't think); any theory could be correct.

Which ever, I think either could be interesting subjects.

But...we know that it's not a choice. We don't know exactly why, but it's definitely not a choice.

Proof? Try asking one of them, most of the gay guys I know would far prefer to be straight, but they can't help fancying guys.

People can choose to be gay, or they can be born gay, whatever. I'm not gay (yet/right now), so they whole argument isn't really my thing. I am also a Christian who really doesn't give a crap about gays being gay. It isn't the worst thing in the Bible.

Hence why I'm only fiscally conservative. Let people do what they want. I'm pro choice and pro gay marriage; if you think abortion is wrong... don't get an abortion yourself. At the same time, I'm REALLY against big government and higher taxes. If someone isn't responsible with their money (the gov't), giving them more money won't help.

Does it matter ?

Either it is not a choice, in that case it has to be accepted and respected, because it can´t and shouldn´t be changed.
Or it is a choice, in that case it has to be accepted and respected, because every person on this planet has the right to make such a decision (seeing how it doesn´t really concern anyone but the person him/herself).

I always found this entire debate kind of weird.

1. Gay obviously isn't a choice just like straight isn't. Being gay/straight/whatever is like preferring strawberry icecream over vanilla. You either like one flavour more or the other flavour more, you can't help what you like.

2. I think those people are responding to the issue ideologically, not logically.

There, I've just exhausted this thread's discussion value (for me, anyway).

You don't choose if you like boys or girls, however..you do choose what way you act about it.

As far as I know, there has been research that has indicated that there is... something... in the brain that triggers it, I can't remember at the moment, but I'm fairly sure I read it somewhere.

There are studies suggest that we really aren't sure what causes homosexuality. It could be linked to hormonal development, genetics, or nurturing; most likely a combination of all three. There is decent evidence that suggests that any one of these origins is the true cause.

To say that it's a choice however is kinda short sighted. Why would people choose a lifestyle that is generally seen as "different" in the kindest of circles? It's a logical question, however it doesn't fully explain the situation.

For me, science has the answer; we just need to find it.

people like you shouldnt think or comunicate about homosexuality...
you have been mislead by young people!
most homosexuals are dillusional, and claim that they have no choice,
but the reality is, that there are choices, everything is a choice!

people COULD say, that being addicted to cocaine is a choice, but its not;
trying it is a choice, liking it is 'a' choice, deciding that you wana do something forever, is in fact a choice.
theres a majority of homosexuals that are believing lies, that are spoken within the confines of thier own minds...
Gay people are just uh... fuck it... I dont know how to add a terminology to it, but I believe ive worded it properly!
Being addicted to cocaine is a choice, you have to first start doing cocaine. Gays are attracted to their own gender before having sex.

My favourite argument FOR it being a choice was my ex-friend, who once said: "It is a choice. I could go out tomorrow and shag some dude, then I'd have chosen to be gay."

Which is just hilarious in its stupidity. He didn't seem to understand that if he wanted to shag a dude, he'd already be gay. You have to be gay to be willing to do that shit.

Anyway, my own persoanl feelings are that it isn't a choice. I know for damn sure I didn't have ANY active choice in my own sexuality, yet I'm apparently one of the gayest people my friends know.

It's kinda painfully obvious that it's not a choice. If the idiots who insist it is had ever spoken honestly and open-mindedly about it with a gay person, they'd realise. But unfortunately those same people who declare being gay is a choice are the same people who generally seem to hate gays for being "wrong" and "unnatural", so they never talk to them openly because they're all afraid the gay guys are just gonna shove their dicks into their mouths or something, I dunno.

EDIT: just to slightly dip into melodrama...why would anyone actively choose a sexuality that means your pretty much an outsider, looked down on by people and shunned by them too, not to mention pretty vigorously despised my most members of organised religions (not bashing religion here, just saying most religions have anti-gay scripture) and even labelled for execution in certain countries.

Brings me onto a point that same ex-friend made. "You don't see any Iraqi people being gay, cause they're smart enough not to choose that lifestyle." Which, again, is hilarious. He assumes everyone who's gay is out and open about it. If you lived in a country where that shit could get you killed, you wouldn't be open about it. The absence of rainbow T-shirts and pink hotpants does not mean an absence of faggotry.
