Ive been hearing increasing complaints about how in most FPS now when you take damage you character seems to start bleeding from their eyes.
So i thought what better way to resolve this than tho ask people about it, what do you think the most effective way or better way of showing damage in a FPS or TPS shooter other than getting jam in your eyes?

Personally i think maybe when you take sufficient damage the screen starts to wobble slightly and you cant aim as well as you can when you are at a good amount of health, now this would obviously mean that you wouldnt be very effective at taking out the guy who is shooting you, but to offset this, you gain a little more resistance to damage, so youll have a window of opportunity to get your ass to safety, of course this means the accuracy reduction would have to be quite severe as to stop players from Rambo-ing it every time.

Well thats my idea, how about yours Escapists?

EDIT: Yes I know you can have a health bar, or a shield and health, the point of this though is the effect, what you see on screen when you get damaged. And how to add a spin to regenerating health

Health Meters.

There is nothing wrong with them, and they're accurate.

Slowing of time, with your idea of lowered accuracy? That way you have a chance to survive, but you need to fight for it. If you take too much further damage, time stops entirely.

Here's a crazy thought...but having health bars again!
The point of this is that most FPS today have done away with health meters, I like health meters as much as the next guy, but in fast paced FPS games, regenerating health is probably a better idea, this thread is about putting a spin to it

I don't mind the whole red screen/blood spatter effect.

Just so long as it doesn't get in the way. Some games take it to far. In The Saboteur (crappy game, don't buy it) the screen would go so red you couldn't see where you were going, let along shoot accurately.

the screen starts getting darker the more damage you take? by that I mean the edges get noticeably darker and the more damage you take the thicker the darkness gets with the death causing a total blackout on the screen

You can have both a health meter and regenerating health. Crysis or Halo have both. It works.

I don't mind the eye bleeding effect, if it's not so absurd that you can't see shit (like in GoW I think). What I don't like about it is there's usually only ONE "bloody screen" texture for the whole game. Can't they make it dynamic? Blood splats and whatever?

Also, what I dislike much more than this is that getting hit usually turns you like 90 degrees to the side, so you can't aim at all. That's basically instakill.
Yeah i know, ODST used both and that was an awesome game, as did Halo: CE

There is no reason we can't have regenerating health and health meters. It could make for very Tactical situations where you could calculate how much damage a bullet does to you and whether or not you need to have a time out to revive the other half of your face. In FPS games nowadays, it can be hard to tell just how much health you're on.

Yeah I know, i actually prefer games that use some form health indicator, I just want to hear peoples opinions on what an alternitave to blood splatters, seeing as lurking around these forums i noticed a lot of people seemed to be annoyed with it

Healthbar. If healthbars aren't your thing: black and white. If you noticed that most games sporting jammy faces are pretty much all black, white and brown, then jammy faces.

Or perhaps a combination of the three?

I'd like to be able to look down and see your character bleeding in some games, but that would be quite hard to put into fast-paced games like Call of Duty. For first person shooters I think eye-bleeding probably works best, but on modern warfare 2 I could never understand how much damage I had actually taken off it. Third person shooters need shields and health for me.
