As the Subject states, I'm considering getting a PS3, on top of my Xbox 360s, and my Wii. The entirety of me purchasing this console would merely be for the exclusives, and the Digital Downloadable classics, and very little to do with the PSN otherwise.
So, convince me in either direction.

Please note: Any comments "Sony is Ghey" or "Microsoft sucks" will be requested to be deleted to a moderator, and if it persists, I will have this locked, and drop the entire issue. Also, any references to the Playstation Network crashing as a sole reason not to will be requested deletion as well. I want serious discussion.

Most of Square's and Capcom's old gems from the PSX generation for sale at a reasonable price. None of that ***** $100 for a slightly used copy on eBay or Amazon anymore. A Blu-Ray player. Several nice exclusives such as Folklore and Uncharted. Once PSN is back up, you don't have to pay Sony to play online. You can easily start alternative profiles if you want some peace and quiet from friends online. You don't have to make some annoying avatar. The best looking console in my opinion. The controller is a comfortable step up from the old one. It's virtually the same except for a few differences. Although it might feel a little weird after using an Xbox's offset controller.

Oh come on no references to PSN being down?! That's harsh.

Well I too have both a 360 and a Wii, and I wouldn't spend my own money on a PS3 personally, even if PSN never went down. My suggestion would be to look at something like this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_games] and sort by exclusives. If you really want enough of those to warrant the amount of money it costs then I guess buy it.

If you could do without them or need to be saving money, skip it as there will probably be new consoles to buy around the corner anyway. Only other thing I can think of is if you want a blueray player, you might as well buy a PS3 if you want one of those.

While I'm not big on anything by Square (I was pretty well forced through FFXIII and any other FF game, unless Kingdom Hearts is on there.)
I have a Blu-ray Player already, and the Exclusives are about the biggest draw for me.
While the PSN is free, I still like my Xbox Live, mostly because I've put more time into it, I have established a group of friends I associate with on a near daily basis, but the appeal of a secondary account is attractive.
I love my Avatar :|
Yes, I agree with the Controller being more comfortable with the PS2, but by far my favorite controller is the GCN, followed by the N64, than the 360, than the PS3.

My opinion is at the "no."

If you have an Xbox and Wii then those exclusives should be enough. My solution: Find a friend who owns a PS3, play the exclusives on his console, go back to the two you have after.

It's better "just cuz"? I don't think the fan boy mentality is needed anywhere here, especially not on this thread.

In regards to OP however, you've done yourself a favour when it comes to prioritising the availability of classic titles available to download and numerous exclusives. I always took online to be a bonus really; not once did it determine my choice of games whatsoever, as I'll gladly play any single player title and pause to chat to a friend via the messaging system.

But I digress. The system does have that subtle nuance of "a game for everyone" mentality as did the PS2 did, so it caters to many tastes and has a wealth of titles within each genre, including the JRPG gang which didn't have many titles to begin with until recently

PSN is really cool when it's up, that black monster has alot of horsepower, imo it has the best exclusives.

I would suggest it, with games like StarHawk, Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Resistance 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, inFamous 1/2, The Last Guardian, MotorStorm Apocalypse, and Twisted Metal. There is a bit more.

Good investment.

Considering you already have a blu-ray player and you're already obviously quite fond of your XBoxes (I can only assume you either use the XBoxes as media centers as well, or aren't interested in a gaming system as a media center)... I would say I have very little ground to give you advice on, because we value different things in our consoles. My PS3 is used mostly as a media center (for streaming video and audio off my PC when I can't be bothered to run a cable to it), blu-ray/DVD player, and for playing PS2 games (I have a first-gen backwards-compatible PS3). To me, exclusives wouldn't be worth it, though... but you probably play shooters with thumbsticks, so... no common ground there either. I imagine a lot of people will run into similar problems due to a lack of information in your gaming tastes.

I guess my advice is don't, then.

It really depends how much you like the exclusives. I've gotta say, owning all the consoles for the past 15 years except Wii, the PS3 is by no means bad, it's just not worth £300. If you can get it cheaply then go for it. I'm guessing by your avatar you enjoy shooters. Killzone 3 is blissful shooter sex as far as that genre is concerned and the online is beautiful. I far, far prefer Killzone 3 to any of the Halos simply because of how visceral and abject the violence is. One melee move involves you literally pushing your thumbs through your opponent's eyes. It's deeply unpleasant.

The PS3's other main features are its very easy to use media server (that actually works on most formats and bitrates unlike the Xbox version), for which I'd recommend PS3 Media Server rather than the pay-for ones (albeit PS3 Media Server might require a little bit more technical knowledge), and its ability to play bluray. If those features appeal to you and you've got the spare cash then go for it.

Of course, when it's not down, the PS3 online network is free and the paid upgrades are essentially worthless, so that's a nice boon over the hefty fee for Xbox Live.

It's hard. While I do not have a PS3, my two best buddies do. I have a 360 and a gaming PC. My feeling is that there is a more varied selection of exclusives and Arcade titles on the PS3, but the overall execution is usually better (marginally) on the 360. If you have the money, why not, but considering you already have a 360 and a Wii, I wouldn't say that it's a must. Find a friend who has one and play at his house or swap consoles for a week or something. Save the money for something down the line.

I love my Xbox, that is accurate, but I'm an appreciator of the art of gaming, not a console fanboy. I use my Xbox as a gaming center and a Media Center (mostly Netflix and some music) and I also dislike most "core" FPS games with a passion. I play Halo, and that's about the end of my FPS gaming.

You're going to have to provide us with a little more information than that. What games do you like? What genres do you like?

I have a few suggestions, but those will be based on my taste and I can't know if you would like them as much as I did:

Valkyria Chronicles - Brilliant SRPG with an interesting watercolor aesthetic. Mixes turn-based combat with real-time quite successfully, one of the more interesting combat systems in the genre.

Demon's Souls - Punishingly difficult and very bleak dark fantasy action RPG. Honestly, this is worthy playing just because you won't find anything like it until the sequel. Once you get into the flow of the game it's very satisfying, too.

Disgaea 3 [small](and 4 when it's released, it looks awesome)[/small] - classical turn-based SRPG. Like Final Fantasy Tactics but with smoother gameplay and a ton of weird humor.

Uncharted 1 & 2 - Third-person shooter/platformer. It's true that these games are about as mainstream as anything is ever going to get, but they're still very good. There's something to be said for the AAA process after all.

Folklore - Weird game. Plays kind of like a third-person beat-em-up with RPG elements. The combat system feels kind of like something that started out on the PS2, but it makes up for it with a lot of different "folks" to capture. Visually it's beautiful, having some excellent character, monster and level designs. Great music as well. Story isn't bad either.

Wipeout HD/Fury (PSN) - Awesome futuristic racing game. Has a lot of different gameplay modes and sticks with the franchise's tradition of incorporating modern electronic music. It should be pretty cheap now, and I'd highly recommend it once the PSN gets back up.

Tales of Graces F [small](also not out yet, but it's fucking TALES OF)[/small] - Okay, this isn't even out yet. The Tales series has been pretty awesome, though.

360 isn't very good for video either, but I never use either console for that.

EDIT: Added descriptions.

Ah then you might like Demon's Souls and its spirtual-sequel Dark Souls (its multi but PS3 is main platform), also even if you don't play Shooters, you should try out the Uncharted, there stories are extreamly well told and it has a nice mix of puzzles and platforming.

I would also like to point out that PS3 games are region-free, so if you should ever want/need to import, you can.

This applies to the PSN as well, as you can make accounts for each region and buy point cards to fund them.

In that case, what you should do is just look at the exclusives, learn about them, and see if any of them appear interesting to you. If you find enough you want, go for it. If not, forget it. If you have any RL friends who have a PS3 and will let you try some demos, so much the better.

Just do yourself a favor and stay away from inFamous. It's easily the worst third person shooter I've played during this console generation. The story is awful and absurd thanks to a bad plot and characters the game wants you to care about but fails to make you do so, the shooting is so easy that you'll spend more time bored because almost none of the fights are challenging, the game's big talk about choices and moral consequences is a bunch of rubbish as no matter what choices you make the plot will still advance in exactly the same way, and there's virtually no post-game content. You do side missions which are almost all just the same boring nonsense as the story missions with only few offering a desperately needed breath of fresh air (sadly, you cannot replay these once you finish them). You do the standard collection quest that pretty much every game has these days. And then the only thing left to do for entertainment in the game is toss Cole into some water and watch him fry. The only thing it has is the cheap trick of making you play twice to see both "stories", but again, the plot doesn't change based on your choices, so it's really just one playthrough with blue special effects and one playthrough with red special effects. Honestly, just save your time. I wouldn't recommended playing that game if you could do so for free.

Oh, and you can just change your Xbox Live status to "appear offline" if you want some alone time. Far more convenient than the multiple account set-up you need on PS3. I don't know why anyone even mentioned that, honestly.

Hey, it's about as helpful as everyone who will rattle off a list of games with not even a basic description of what those games are and say "They're good play them." A positive statement about something should be accompanied by a reason or two why the person thinks it's good, just as a negative statement should be accompanied by some reasons. But as usual, people only call out the negative ones because how dare someone have a different opinion on the Internets.
