And I'm not enjoying the old ones, either. So, it's not that it's due to me believing there is a lack of quality in modern games in the genre or anything.

Edit: And I'm not sitting here just playing non-stop RPGs, either. I've had Portal 2, Sly Collection, Bayonetta (now on PS3, this time), Killzone 3, Uncharted 2, Vanquish, and many other games breaking up the RPG cycle.

Literally the only RPGs I have finished in Fall '10 and this first third of '11 were Pokemon Black/White and Fable 3. And Fable 3 still took a week, which, when you factor in my endless free time and it's short length, is forever. Dragon Age 2 still lies at the beginning of Act 3, unfinished. New Vegas lies 26 hours in, with me standing outside the gates to Freeside with Veronica and ED-E. Legend of Mana, my favorite JRPG of all time, finally made it onto PS3/PSP last month, and my save file has a mere 7 hours a month later. Persona 4 sits at 25 hours since I got it in December, with me saving right after getting Kanji.

Even my beloved Pokemon is not immune, starting this whole slump a year ago...With SoulSilver still sitting in front of the Elite Four, over a year later. I finally picked it up and beat them 2 days before Black/White, and now that's sitting their again. Then again...Kanto's content is ass, due to low-level wild pokemon and piss-easy trainers for a post-Elite Four team, so motivation is sorely lacking in the form of either challenge or story.

Honestly, I think all the aforementioned titles are quality titles, except maybe SoulSilver, but just can't give a fuck anymore.

My exhaustion for WRPGs is understandable, as their mechanics are becoming more simplistic and action focused...with the focus now much heavy on world-building and story. I dislike this personally, but now is not a time for debate. But I still like Dragon Age 2's combat, and New Vegas still is very stat heavy thanks to less Perks and the new Damage Threshold making point blank shotgun blasts less effective than FO3. And I love me some optional stealth, and New Vegas has pretty good stealth.

My exhaustion with JRPGs...less-so. I have no clue why I can't enjoy my all time favorite JRPG or even Persona 4. Plus, I'm one of those twats who thought FF13 was great. To be even twattier, I thought it was the best FF, too.

Have you ever fallen out of love with a genre or game you once enjoyed? If so, which was it, and what do you think was the reason?

And does "twattier" have 2 Ts or 1?

I feel similarly with RPGs lately. Sure, I played the hell out of New Vegas (when it wasn't bugging out) but Dragon Age 2 just sapped all my enthusiasm for any new RPG. Dragon Age 2 wasn't bad, it was quite enjoyable, but as an RPG it was bad. That's how I tend to feel to about most new RPGs (and by extension, most BioWare games after Mass Effect) that come out.

Thankfully finding older ones that I haven't played before helps me stay interested, but regardless I still feel that way. Have been getting back into FPS's lately, bought Crysis 2 recently and have been playing more TF2. Crysis 2 was alot of fun, story was stupid yeah but I liked the suit mechanics.

I was a big fan of the Final Fantasy games from the period of 7 thru 10 minus the online stuff. FFVII remains one of my all time favorite games, along with IX. Then something odd happened when I got to VIII...I liked it well enough, it was -the- game I had to have that year for Christmas.

But you know, I never finished it. There was just something irritating about it, that couldn't make me go through it another time, or till the end.

Things picked up with IX of course....annnd then down again with X (which again, I did not finish) and *shudders* X2 (which I did finish, not that it was hard). I bought XII, but didn't even make it past the first open area. It was at point I realized I had fallen out of love with the series as a whole. I'll still go back and have a blast with VII and IX (Hell, even FFI gives me some entertainment in a retro DnD'ish kind of way) but I no feel compelled to by the latest FF like I once did and doubt I will in the future.

Perhaps you are getting sick of games using very similar mechanics. I notice you said you liked FF13. This might be because of the battle system being fairly unique. Perhaps try some oddball obscure RPGs or perhaps try some srpgs.

To answer the OP question as shortly as possible: Yes, because of overload.

As for me it was also RPGs, but just in general I see if that's all one plays you just kind of wear yourself out of it. Hell, even in the last few months I've just been switching from RPG to RPG, sometimes an older one, sometimes a newer one because it's on special (older lappy, not going to risk a $50 purchase on something that may not run smoothly), and on average have gone maybe 3-5 hours into it only to put it down and start another one.

Yet at this moment I'm taking a break from Borderlands, the first FPS I've played in maybe half a decade, and I'm having a damn blast with it. (note: Though I do recognize some level systems and other RPG elements, I'm don't consider it one at all)

So, to give a helpful suggestion, maybe just take a break from the genre for a bit. I realize that I've got quite a few actiony titles to do some catching up with, knowing that the RPGs that I've started won't mind waiting for me to get back to them.

First Person Shooters. My first FPS was Halo, and I loved the series, but goddamn is the genre stagnant now. They're all corridors with focus on graphics(but not physics) and a broken multiplayer. Even Killzone lost most of what made it original so it could appeal to other people.

Yeah actually as it turns out mine is RPG's as well. Though more specifically those of the Japanese variety. Western RPG's have always been middle-of-the-road for me. But I haven't played a Japanese RPG that I've truly enjoyed since Dark Cloud 2.

I'm staying away from most SRPGs ever since that genre became stuffed with grinding thanks to Disgaea's influence. Or high difficulty without the possibility of grinding, thanks to Fire Emblem's influence.

And Pokemon felt unique and new to me, due to the new moves, abilities, and pokemon...so that would explain a lot.

If you can recommend some oddball RPGs, I'm all ears. :)

Taking a break might work...If I had anything left to play besides unfinished RPGs. :(

Just finished Borderlands again myself 2 weeks ago. Level 43 Berserker. With PSN down, co-op isn't available, and all the solo content is piss-easy now. Being for Level 35s...And I LIKE Borderlands solo more than co-op. Just not when I'm over-leveled for everything. :p

If you have any suggestions for games, fire away.

Don't worry about it man. People grow up and tastes change. That is just how the world works.

OT: I dunno. I think the only thing that might qualify is fighting games. I used to like fighting games more than I do now. Of course, I had more friends back then, so that might have something to do with it... I don't really dislike any genre besides sports games (which I have never liked) and I have never really "fallen out of love" (at least in the way you are using it) with a genre yet. Yes, there have been times when I liked a genre less, but I eventually find a game that reinvigorates my love for the genre once more.

Nope never happened to me, still have a bunch of old games I love installed from up to 1993 (I'm not even mentioning the cartridges...) that I play up to this day. The way I see it - if I love something it's forever, nothing is going to change that. JRPGs hardly ever appealed to me (except maybe FF7 and FF8 and even then I prefered watching rather than playing). Now WRPGs I love, and I'm not talking Diablos and Fables (although those are fun as well), I'm talking Bioware/Black Isle/Troika/Obsidian stuff where storyline, plot and character development actually mean something. I don't care whether its 2D or 600x800 or has turn-based combat. Good games are like wine, they never truly age. With that said I do occasionally get tired of some particular games or genres, for instance strategy and RPG can require a lot of time, effort and thinking. Sometimes I need to take a break with some brainless FPS/TPS or a racing game where its more instincts and reaction time and less thinking a few steps ahead (not that all shooters or racing games are necesarily brainless, some have deep and varied story and gameplay mechanics). Then after I had my break I return with refreshed determination and play the hell out of those high maintenance games.
And despite RPGs nowadays mostly being on the decline (I'm only really excited for Witcher 2 coming out soon) I still think they are worthwhile. Maybe you just burned out and need to take a break?

Oh and yeah - bring hypnotoad back.

Shooters and platformers I guess. Shooters I'm just sick of the formula, only time I tend to enjoy them is if the story is surprisingly good, or if theres co-op. Platformers on the other hand, I'm not sure. Maybe it's because the two main series' which I enjoyed have gone down the pan(Crash Bandicoot and Sonic).

It took my 3 years before I could play a mission-based game. I needed an open-world. Something that felt big. I turned to sandbox titles like GTA and Assassin Creed. It took a while, but I started to enjoy mission-based games again.

I'm stuck in a nostalgic cycle. I just can't seem to enjoy any modern game as much as an older generation counterpart.

Online shooters and sandbox games. I played CS 1.6 for a few years and I followed GTA from the original up to Vice City.

For some reason, I can't go back. I've tried plenty of games from both genres, but it doesn't take. They just bore me now.

And if that wasn't weird enough, grind has become quite enjoyable. Yes, grind. Maybe I'm actually losing my fucking mind, but there's something undeniably appealing about it for me.

I'm currently having a falling out with games in general. I just can't seem to get into games like I used to, and every day I have less motivation to pick up even the most enjoyable title.

For your RPG woes, I'd recommend The World Ends With You for now, and then try to hold out for Skyrim later this year. TWEWY (if you haven't already played it) is a fantastic game, one of the best on the DS, and is a huge breath of fresh air as far as RPGs, especially JRPGs, go. So if you haven't, you should definitely give it a shot.

Played it, loved it...might as well play it again, right? Using different pins.

Still don't fucking understand pin evolution, though.

Does this mean you are greatly anticipating Disgaea 4?

Getting sick with a genre is usually a sign that you are overloaded on a genre. Games are fun because of the learning and discovery they provide, and eventually there will bee too much overlap. The solution? Expand your horizons. Pick up a shooter, an action/adventure, a platformer, or a strategy game if you don't play that genre. Dive into the world of indie games and find something completely different. Grab some D+D books, a Catan set, some Magic cards, something you don't normally do.eventually the overload will pass, and the RPG will seem fresh again. Usually, people who play the same game every night for years and years do so because of habit and comfort, not because its comfortable. Explore beyond your comfort zone

I fatigued of 2D platformers a few years ago. Part of it is just that there are so many of them, and another part is that I'm annoyed that there are fewer 3D platformers. I was really hoping when I heard Rare was working on a Donkey Kong title for the Wii that it would be like Donkey Kong 64.

Anyway, I still love RPGs to death. No falling out of love there at all.
