Well good for you, I guess. I've never really liked the series, or the genre, but if your looking for a new JRPG franchise that's similar, but not shit, my JRPG liking friends tell me "Shin Megami Tensei"(sp?) is quite good, though they are all on ps2.
Spelled right and this is true. There is no such thing as a bad Shin Megami Tensei game.

Also, Final Fantasy is a good series but XII was what was perhaps the worst game in gaming history. Best to forget about it and move on.

I wasn't too keen on FF10, because I didn't like Tidus, but I gave 12 a chance and hated that even more. Still like the old Final fantasies, up to 9, but I don't have the time to play Final Fantasy XIII so I really can't give an opinion on that one.

Ok that's nice air enough you have an opinion I personally like Star Ocean:TTEOT but that is just me. I don't really see the point in making a thread about this when a simple twitter update would have sufficed. Venat was some part of a group omnipotent being trying to rule the world and take control of its course away from man or something along those lines. He basically instagated the events of the whole game and was the reason of all the wars and what not as promises of power to the guy who looks like a Cure Tribute band thingy. I wouldn't quote me on this as fact though as I haven't played it in a good while.

I'm one of those noobiews who played FFX first ... then didn't play seven, but played FFXII. Frankly I loved (and love) FFX. As for FFXII, it is a nice change from FFX, seeing as there aren't 'random encounters' and such. And FFXII did have a plot
The arcadian empire killed the king of that other place because they wanted their magic stone. You start off playing as vaan, who is the younger brother of someone who died in the war, and you go and get petty thieving revenge on the empire leading to you meeting fran and balthier, who are sky pirates, and through them you meet princess and traitor, who lead you on a perilous anti-empire quest to find another magic stone. You find the dead magic stone and go 'Well oh shit', go to some horned hippies to try and figure it out, go to the bunnies as a means of getting to an old religious guy, which results in you getting a sword to destroy said magic stones (because you can't have the empire getting control of magic world-ruling stones). You then fight your way to the empire, trying to kill the bad guys and stop them getting the magic stones, and you find out that there is a giant magic stone which is the source of magic stones. You also find out that they (the empire) found out about the magic stones from a rebel god thing who wants to give power back to the people or something. Then you kill the giant stone thing, disobey the non-rebel gods and kick the arse of the rebel god and the empire in general, thereby saving the world from being ruled by and evil-rebel-god motivated cheese-faced butt-hole. So basically, an evil empire wants magic stones because a rebel-god got pissed off at the other gods and decided to tell the crazy people about god-stones. The search for these magic stones gets the big brother of vaan killed by the evil twin of basch, who also kills the king (father of princess). You then set out on a revenge quest bringing along a childhood friend and two sky pirates with the promise of riches.
I think I summed it up nicely

I believe that after FFVII, things got downhill from there for a lot of people. Plots got too simple that there wasn't any, maturity went doooooown, and made you hate yourself the more you play them due to embarrassment (linked to maturity). Sure there are some people who actually like some of these games but for others who focus on story and characters... HATE WILL RISE. See Spoony's review of FFVIII as an example.

I didn't think XII was that bad, and as far as worst in the series are we including X-2 or not because... seriously? Ranks up there with the Zelda CDi games. The voice acting was superb from what I remember from watching my brother play which was a huge welcome over FFX's. I viewed the characters, at least Vaan anyway, sorta like Ramza in FFT. Yeah you were controlling him, but he was just one of many characters with an important part in the story. The only thing I genuinely hated were the enemies that would go into "You can't hurt me" mode. I'd say it was much better than FFX and FFVIII in terms of what it means to be a Final Fantasy.

I hated FFXII, I definitely agree it was a total piece of shit. The story was pointless and illogical, while you couldn't even progress past an area without grinding panel things and the best gear available. I haven't played FFXIII yet, but I'm hoping it's not as god awful. We'll see.

I was saying this the other day, final fantasy games gun for melodrama and a romantic sub-plot. Final fantasy 8 is my teen final fantasy and it gunned so specifically for the 12-16 demographic that in hind sight it's obvious. Teenagers deal in archetypes and extremes, final fantasy games are made with polarised characters that appeal to a teenager. It doesn't make them bad but you have to realise they're not going for a nuanced and deep portrayal of characters.

Take Squall, when I was younger I thought he was deep and tormented, but now I realise that his freezing everyone out is some kind of childish clinging to despair. He has supportive friends and so, so many girls who want to get to know him better. The outlook of him not wanting people he can get hurt is uninformed since there's nothing in his past that'd cause that trauma. He's a nihilist and affects emotional detachment in order to avoid pain. In a lot of ways he's basically a stereotypical teenager.

off topic: it's quite easy to guess someone's age on here based on the last final fantasy game they enjoyed. I've checked my results a few times, try it.
Thank you, somebody gets my point.

I was quoted so many times by teenagers who felt the need to "defend their honor" by saying "I'm not like that" or "my friends aren't like that." Apparently they thought the best way to do that was bash a game my family and I like.

Frankly I don't give a damn about stories in video games, my motto is "If you want a great story, read a book." It's nice to see a game try really hard for a good story, but even the "good" video game stories fall into a list of tropes and cliches; just a list that isn't common with other games.

What is so wrong about Till the End of Time? Last Hope was SO much worse, also 12 was great, 13 sucked ass
SO3 was a decent game until the storyline started going bonkers. You know what I am talking about if you have played that game. "4D" has got to be the most bizzare twist I have ever seen in a game.
I don't remember that much (its been a while) but most people seem to ***** and whine the most about the twist "we've been a videogame this whole time" that's the best twist I've ever seen

Not played many games, have you?

Go play E.T. or Thousand Arms. I've played them and they are FAR worse than any FF title (including Mystic Quest - blugh).

Popular votes also seem to go to Superman 64, but I never played that one, so I can't say for sure.
Actually I have and the reason Final Fantasy XII takes the cake for me is because it was such a disappointment. I've never been more upset over a game ever.

Superman 64 and E.T. are so bad it's funny. Final Fantasy XII is bad in the most un-funny ways possible.

Ah, good. I was starting to worry that I was the only one in the universe who didn't like #10. Final Fantasy X is really where my intrest in the series ended; I realize that Tidus is supposed to be our main character and who we're supposed to relate to because he doesn't know any more than we do, but the endless scenes of--

Main Character: "(plot-important person/thing)!"
Tidus: "(plot-important person/thing)? What's that?"
Main Character: "(overlong and condecending explanation)."
Tidus: "I don't get it."

--managed to both annoy and bore me at the same time. 10 is, for me, where the writing really went downhill. I feel like the production team were so pleased to have voice acting they put all the effort into that and forgot that well-written NPCs are excellent ways to flesh out a story, and a world, and inform the player of what things are and what they mean without undermining the main character to the point at which he seems to be suffering some serious mental handicap.

That and I hated the story. And the character design, and the battle layout...
I could go into details, but I don't think anybody will care beyond telling me how wrong I am...
