But, is it not true that different religions embrace different moral values? So, would I be wrong for selecting a representative who agrees with my values? The name of the religion becomes a matter of mere nomenclature if I am making a value judgement. I'm not a religious nut, but I don't think it's necessarily evil to allow religious leanings to influence one's vote. Not that those people aren't being dicks in this particular instance.

Well, lets answer this challenge. First off, I never said that it was evil for religion to influence you're vote. Secondly, religion should not be the only thing that influences you're vote; if it is one of the factors fine, but if it is the only factor then I say that you need to learn to think for yourself.

I too, am from the north (Ohio, if you must know), and I have walked in to a few different places getting breakfast on my way to school and I have heard things like "barrack Hussein Osama" and "That guy will fuck our country up" and worse.

By the way, I support Obama just for the fact that Biden seems intelligent, unlike Palin. But that's just me, take from it what you will.

Ultimately, there are a lot of "special" people in the South, but that doesn't mean generalizing 8/10[sup]th[/sup] (4/5[sup]th[/sup]) of them is going to do any good but perhaps alienate yourself to an audience of those more intelligent voters that you're trying to appeal to.

There are a lot more informed voters out there than you're giving credit to, even in the South. Logically, McCain will get more votes down here, but not for the same reasons you've given.

It's arguable that having a war in which hundreds of thousands or your people were killed mostly in your territory with vast amounts of crops and industry burned, followed by a period in which you couldn't even elect your representatives and were the third world to a vengeful victor might tend to make one's region poor. Just look at what happened in Weimar Republic Germany post WW I, only multiply it several times for the destroyed infrastructure. It should come as no surprise to anyone that hatred and patriotism are powerful unifying forces in a devastated region; give the South some credit for being so much more low-key than Hitler.

It's coming on 150 years now, but poverty and illiteracy are the path of least resistance. The southern people of my experience tend to be only as racist as the Yankees I know, though admittedly being shifted toward the hillbilly side of the spectrum away from lowland redneck tends to help in that respect. I certainly haven't heard the OP's type statement with any frequency, and I spent the summer renting things to talkative southern construction workers. Honestly, racism against Hispanics is at higher ebb than blacks by far.

I see your point, and I have to concede some truth to it, but I think it is exaggerated, and a lot offensive. I have traveled extensively in the South, northern seaboard, and West, and I've never seen anything that made me look on the South as poorly as you describe. Not that the people you describe aren't there, but I haven't seen them as a majority in most regions. On the other hand, I've been to Boston and New York, and I wasn't stricken by their kindness, enlightenment and understanding. Quite the opposite. In my experience, the South just isn't that much worse than the North in this regard, except in specific regions, which is a point I must concede.

And it has everything to do with the war. The South is a very different place to this day because of the havoc caused. The North could absorb the loss of life, the South could not. The infrastructure, industry, and agricultural base of the South was crushed, and specific regions never recovered.

I also have no delusions about the place I live and the people I am from. And I still say that they frequently get a bad rap. Congressional Reconstruction was a pretty bad rap.

Hmm well I'm in the middle of the south (Tennessee) and I have yet to hear racist remarks of him. Plus have you been to atlanta or montgomery, new orleans, jacksonville? huge black populations so if the south is so bad about race why are so many around?

The sad thing about the "Obama is a Muslim!" claims is that both sides have tried to squash the rumor, but it lives on strong. There are even Democrats who will cross over because they don't want a "Muslim" running the country. Even if he was a Muslim, what's wrong with that? Politics aside, there is really something wrong with that statement. Just because we are in a war with people who are Muslim doesn't mean all Muslims are inherently bad. Unfortunately, enough people believe it to keep this rumor going strong.

I'm totally middle-of-the-road, but I sure do wanna whack people in the head when I hear stuff like this. I'm a Southerner from the big city of Atlanta, where most people are for Obama, but you step outside the city limits and it's all red country. Not that this is bad, but it is where you hear these Muslim claims. Can't we just vote on the politics and leave those other factors out of the discussion? Especially when said factors are lies.

In my experience most Southerners are the least racist people in the country, especially against black people. Would you like to know why? BECAUSE BLACK PEOPLE ONLY LIVE IN THE SOUTH!! Honestly look up a map on the population distribution map of African-Americans and see that they live in the South. Everyone else is racist due simply to the fact that there are no African-Americans anywhere else.
