Yeah, as has already been said, Space Marines are really simple for a quick slap of paint and a battle, but they do have enough detail available to paint that you could go to town with detail if you wanted to. They're a nice, diverse army to paint.

Also, if anyone here has been around the GW news for the past year or so, could they possibly tell me why the hell they decided to drop all the old classic ranges and the ability to order separate sprues and models out of box sets? I came back to Warhammer a month or so ago now that my exams are over, and find incredibly limited bitz sections and a considerable lack of classic models, meaning my scope for conversions has been blitzed =(
It was costing the company way too much money to keep going with the sale of individual componants. Yes people may have been annoyed, i know i was, but it was in the best interest of the company so i accept it.

As to the OP, i would suggest Daemonhunters. You get a fairly decent variety of units that if you wish, d not take anytime to aoaint at all. You can have large numbers of stormtroopers or small numbers of grey knights, and if you wish you can incorporate other units from the forces of the imperium. They can be one of the more exensice armies though moneywise. And the codex could do with an update.
Of course, you could always wait until december for the new space wolves?

Ok I simply dislike tau for their strategy since they get boned very fast and very well by any fast moving assault units, I'll take my orks with the turbo-boost rule (and extra mayo) please.
I don't know, when i used them i think I did well as I wiped the floor with ork and space marine armies.

What I would do is use the Skyray/Railcannon thingy to take out the enemy tanks and elite units before they could get near me then just mop up the rest and my battle/stealth suits took care of the fast units

Yeah not much room for modelling though
I'm sorry, I based my post on your OP, where you said you were mostly interested in actual playability as well as easy painting. I neglected to notice anything regarding additional demands later on in this thread.
It's OK

To save time on painting, give the mins a black undercoat, then spray another colour over the top. Saved loads of time on my lizardmen, so could easily work on marines.

I'm just waiting for them to go back over Eldar again: more units need grenades (inc haywire) and some new (cheaper and/or plastic) wraithguard mins would be nice.

Hmm so by the looks of things you want are A:Easy to paint B:Fun to play with and finally you want to be able to convert models I would say Chaos Space Marines if you want to be able to convert more dramaticlly but Im not to sure about them being fun to play but by the looks of people commenting on the codex and amount of people playing them they must be. But if you don`t like the look of CSM you could probaly go with Blood Angels or one of the normal codex chapters.

Yes that's what I'm looking for but how do they play?

I always wanted to try Warhammer, but it looked expensive and time-consuming.

So I went with Mage Knights instead...until WizKids stopped making them.

If you want easy to paint do the Necrons. I found a very simple and cheap way to paint them.

1) black primer coat

2) silver/bronze,ect marker and just let it brush over the outside not letting it get into the folds and voila all painted for the most part.

3) you can add details like tiny green dots in the dark eye sockets and they really look sweet and it saves you on paint as you can buy the markers for like 2 bucks.

This isn't obviously going to win you any painting tournaments but its quick, easy and looks pretty damn good. Enjoy.

PS: to put the green dots for the eyes remove a single hair from a coarse brush or use the end of a toothpick. Put the model on its back and let the drop dry in place so it doesn't run and look sloppy :)

Conversion wise theres alot you can do its just a matter of using your imagination. Using the Eldar swooping hawks metal wings on some models would look sweet in my opinion. Also with a little green stuff and some time you can add some crazy details like shoulder pads and those loin cloth things the eldar avatar wears onto your units. Bah makes me wanna start again and convert some necrons...

Orks are really good for customisation.
But if you want something easy to paint, you can't go wrong with marines or necrons, Eldar are good for painting if you want to use lots of colours.

I couldn`t tell you myself but by the looks of things they are more specilised versions of SM really with the additons of Daemons with your army being either specced into Ranged or Close Combat but you could probaly make a balanced army if you wanted to, You would probaly be better off asking someone who played CSM rather than myself.

I started 40K with Orks.

I then went to Tau.

Only after that did I realise that I had chosen polar opposites.

I like it.

Can I make two...no three...ok 4 points, one: I only play city fight so the dense cover between streets makes the railgun useless, second: my best two units is a bunch of biker nobz who is lead by a warboss who's model is so big, the staff at my local warhammer store kept asking me what his front armour value is, and boss zagstuk who can deepstrike and assault in the same turn (costing d3 models chosen by me out of his large retinue) essentially making the firepower worthless when he turns on a power claw that attacks at initiative value when assaulting, and 3: I use a big mek with a kustom force field to protect my attacks making them obscured targets, and 4: last time I got hit with that tank combo, my scouting deffkoptas took out all the tanks by the third turn leaving my opponent with a few devilfishes and lots of infantry stuck in assault.

If you want variety and the ability to mod units I would say Eldar then. They have a wealth of units(and you can always use dark eldar bits to spice things up) and they have mostly plastic kits which are fairly easy to mod.

Me myself I have a necron, marine, guard and chaos armies. I would say The necrons were the most fun for me because I used tons of different bits to make them unique.

Dark Eldar. Just paint them all black!

Oh, and don't worry about having to pay X amount of money for a new codex every time they come out, because it never. Fucking. Updates.
