TF2 - F2P, classes, objectives, close quarters, heavy emphasis on team play, no mind blowing graphics, essentially Brink with 10+ years of polish

Tribes Ascend - F2P, classes, objectives, mostly open fields with crucial tight spots, team play is expected, very fast and very hard, extremely pretty

Monday Night Combat - tower defense / TPS mix, $10, classes, objectives, close quarters, heavy on team play, graphics push no limits here
Super Monday Night Combat (which as far as I know, is just the PC version) is actually free to play. The system requirements are also surprisingly low; it runs better on my computer than any other Unreal III engine game I've ever played.

Like everyone else said, Team Fortress 2, free, really good, really really good. Team play is encouraged in a lot of ways with classes having the means to aid on another.

Team Fortress 2. It's free, is wonderfully designed, emphasises team play and usually leads to close quarters combat, with the snipy-snipy bit being a part of the spectrum, and not the entire game.

The graphics might be a problem, they're fairly old. On the other hand, the game it designed to look like a pixar-film, so it hardly matters, it's the sort of game that will look just as good in ten years as it do now and did five years ago.

Just try to stay away from hat-obsessed players. Those people are weird.
You only say that because you have not found any manly hats of awesomeness. ^_^
Oh I've found one or two...

...I just don't really care about them all that much. They're a fun little cosmetic touch to be sure, but that all goes out the window once the shooting starts. I only frequent trading servers to get rid of excess crates, and that's more than enough for me. I'm afraid that if I start associating with chronic traders too much I'll contract a strange debilitating disease or something.

There's a free weekend for Red Orchestra 2 on Steam so I would suggest that you check it out. It is a World War 2 game, but it's pretty good.

I'd suggest TF2 or Tribes (below), since both are free and pretty good.

I'll always suggest Tribes Ascend, as it's free. So you don't really lose much if you find out you don't like it.

There's also a referral system which rewards both players... Refer a Friend [https://account.hirezstudios.com/tribesascend/?referral=2081798&utm_campaign=email] /shameless
As for Brink, far as I know didn't that game kind of flop?

Since no one's suggested it yet, I'm going to point out the free-to-play Blacklight: Retribution [http://blacklight.perfectworld.com/]. I've been playing it for a bit now, and I quite like it.

There is nothing better and more addictive than Team Fortress 2. In fact, I'm about to go play a couple of rounds now.
agreed.

it's free and literally it's the one game i thought of on every box on your list OP (besides amazing graphics, which they aren't bad, just the art style is cartoonish)

plus it's the only game where it doesn't cause rage inducing every turn regardless of how well you are doing, i have yet to get mad beyond the occasional "ZOMG LET'S BLACK BOX+STICKY BOMB SPAM THE SPAWN" which gets tiring, otherwise don't ever seem to get mad, in fact i laugh alot from all the awkward/funny deaths

I guess Payday: The Heist could work for you then. It's focused on teamplay while you rob banks, drug dealers and whatnot.

There's no vehicles, you have to work as a team and while you can snipe a bit (not that much), it's not at all like sniping in a game like BF3.

Hello Escapist members,

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a multiplayer FPS but since I'm not really a FPS person, I feel the need to ask around before making a purchase. Note that I'm only looking for PC games.

So without further ado, here's what I'm looking for (and not looking for):

- At least in FPS's, the graphics are important to me
- I'm not really fond of the old WWII theme, nor the Iraq conflict
- I'm not keen on arena based FPS's like Quake Live
- I'm looking for a more objective based FPS
- I'm looking for a FPS heavily focused on team play so I don't want to see everyone running around aimlessly trying to prove they're uber leet
- I'm not keen on vehicle based FPS's. I gave BF2 a try some time ago, and I found it painfully awful. Helicopters were hovering above spawn points etc...
- I don't like Counter Strike
- I prefer close (or "close-ish") combat rather than sniping.

To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, I watched some first impression videos of Brink and I know some FPS pro players might think it's bad, but from the looks of it Brink looked very close to what I'm looking for, mainly because from what I've seen people tend to work as a team. Besides, it feels as if you're not supposed to be all over the map, but in fact advance as a team one step at a time (mostly). I also liked the design.

However, the video was quite old so I couldn't find any information on the current state of the game in multiplayer, how the servers are, how many people are still playing it, whether or not they've added more maps etc.

Evidently, if there's something better out there that matches my description please share!

I'm waiting for suggestions. Thanks!

If you don't mind me cheating with a TPS, Super Monday Night Combat is free and heavily team focused. Matchmaking is wonky though, so if you see people named "Grayfox" or "Awpteamoose" on the enemy team, prepare to have a quick match. But overall, it's very much based on teamplay and strategy, with no one class being able to completely dominate on their own and win the match for their team (Assault however gets very, very close).

Seeing as how you like objective-based stuff, Super MNC also delivers with progressively more objectives popping up as the match progresses. Doubly so with its new game-mode TurboCross, which adds turret rebuilding and upgrading for even more depth and objectives to handle. Seriously, this game is fucking great and deserves more love, especially since UberEnt treats their customers right and fairly.

I don't care if it's technically not an 'FPS' it's still the most fun you can have online.

I'm going to third this game, although be warned that it takes forever to get the Exp to unlock new weapons. I mean, its 18000 for a new class, but 42000 for a spinfusor? WTF?
The way I see it, it's to break new people into their mindset of bullet weapons > explosive ones before bitter tribes vets get to them first and trick them into using spinfusors.

Or I could be exaggerating, since the pathfinder starts with a spinfusor anyway.

On topic though, I'd confirm that tribes ascend is likely exactly what you're after. Just don't get in there and start accusing people of cheating lol, some have been playing tribes games for years and can do some pretty crazy stuff.

Really? Most of my kills are with the Pathfinder's spinfusor, seeing as it is capable of hitting 700 on a direct hit and 500 on a near miss. The assualt rifle by comparison does only 75 per hit and you're normally too far away to get more than about 1 in 5 accuracy. Though that may be because I'm really bad at the game.
Also, the Juggernaut (the other class unlocked by default) has a heavy spinfusor.

probably been suggested but KILLING FLOOR! its just a fantastic game, very focused on team play especially at later difficulties, lots of servers, a noticeable progression in terms of class. basically just go and play it
