I'm looking for a game with a compelling single player experience.

The last single player experience I enjoyed was Portal 2. It's been awhile, and I really feel like getting into another one. Just whatever suggestions you have, if you have the time to help me out here. I'm pretty bored and one of those single player games that you just get lost in would hit the spot right now.

Thank you for your time.

What platform? The most enjoyable single-player experiences I've had recently were Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, and The Witcher 2.

I've been replaying Fallout 3 recently and its pretty awesome, especially when you leave a grenade after you pickpocket someone :)

God of War 3. Not as long as the first two, but it crams a ton of gameplay into those hours.

Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 2
Assassins's Creed 2
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

If you have already played all of these... play them again. That's the best advice I can offer.

It would greatly help if you indicated what genres interest you and what platforms you own. I could suggest Persona 3, which can have 80+ hours of gameplay with a thoroughly compelling story and character development, but if you don't own a PS2 or like JRPGs then it won't be your thing.

Kahunaburger:

I have a PC that can run anything, and an Xbox 360. Technically I have a Wii as well, but I'd have to pull it out of storage.
I hadn't thought of the witcher, do you need to have played the first game to get the full experience out of it?

Father Time: Long games are just what I'm looking for! Sadly, I don't have a Play Station.

Get the Orange Box, which has four games with a huge focus on singleplayer, three of which being of the same series.

If you already own a Steam version of Half-Life 2 (included in Orange Box), I'd highly suggest getting Underhell [http://www.moddb.com/mods/underhell/], because despite only the Prologue being out the story is absolutely brilliant and the game will last you several hours.

Underhell sounds great! I will try it! But any other suggestions are still welcome.

And I haven't met a genre out there that I haven't found one or two examples that I enjoy.

No, not necessarily. It of course helps, but really i'd say before even playing the first Witcher, go read some of Andrzej Sapkowski's work to familiarise yourself with the world and the lore. The Last Wish is a good book to start with to get a flavour of the world and of Geralt. It might even influence your decisions during moral choice moments. For example, you might think initially support the Scoia'tel, but after reading the books and getting an idea of what they're really like, you might think twice before offering them your aid next time. It will also help you to get an idea of how Witchers tend to favour neutrality above picking sides.

I highly recommend The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and the Mass Effect games for great role-playing experiences. Oblivion can last up to 100+ hours and its many side-quests are a joy to behold. Do you have a favourite genre? It might help narrow the choice. If you value story above all else and don't mind old games, The Longest Journey is, to me, one of the best PC games of all time and an absolute testament to how character development and interaction can and should be handled in a lavish story.

Bioshock 1.
Portal 2.
Metro 2033

Also
Arkham Asylum.
Red Dead Redemption (once you get into it, it's worth it. Completely)

Well, if you can run anything on your PC, the graphics are certainly a thing to behold in that game. I'd say you could probably jump straight into it having not played the first Witcher, but my advice would be you to read the journals to catch up on the characters + the story + spells/equipment. It's hard to get into, but it's IMO one of the best RPGs of the current generation once you do :)

And as Gralian said, if you can get your hands on The Last Wish it really helps get the feel for the world, the characters, and the lore.

Gralian: My favorite genre is FPS. Things like Half-life, Halo, Bioshock and such have been my all time favorites. BUT any good game would do me now. Also, I don't have the time to assimilate myself into your witcher universe thing. But thanks anyway!

Frontastic: I saw Metro 2033 on a shelf once. I haven't heard -anything- else. That makes me suspicious of it's quality, but you think it's good?

I loved the over-the-topness of Prototype, so I would recommend that

Also Red Dead Redemption was filled with interesting characters and I had a good time
