Well I did say heavier version. I mean, they both incorporate heavy industrial metal in their music. And then they change it into something beautiful.

I dunno if anyone's mentioned other metal bands related to your liking of Kamelot yet, but I'd like to heartily recommend Pre-Unia era Sonata Arctica. Also, bands like Thunderstone, Excalion, and Iron Savior represent various places on the genre spectrum that early Sonata and most of Kamelot's stuff occupies. Check them out.
