I'm an absolute console newbie. The last console I owned was an 8-bit Gameboy. My wife dropped something about giving me a PSP (probably a PSP Slim & Lite or PSP Go) for Christmas, which I think is absolutely adorable. The thing is I have absolutely no idea what good games are available on that platform. I usually play PC RPGs like Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, Baldur's Gate, Eschalon, ... So I'm curious: what good RPGs are there for the PSP, and what games from other genres would you advise?

I imagine myself playing RPGs, Beat 'em ups and adventure games (Zelda, not Final Fantasy). I see there's Street Fighter 3 for PSP, a bunch of Dragonball Beat 'em ups, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, ...

I might even give Rock Band a try.

Dracula X Chronicles, has a remake Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, and the a port of the original Rondo plus it's sequel Symphony of the Night. Rondo's a side scrolling action game that loves kicking your ass while Symphony of the Night drops you in Dracula's castle and is more free form exploring. Google it for a better idea of what I'm talking.

Also if you're in to turn based combat, drab the Persona remake, it's dungeon crawling is First person. The twist is you can recruit monsters by talking to them and they give items and cards to fuse new Personas for you to use. Also the story line is really good.

Thanks, these are exactly the tips I'm looking for. I'm not much into JRPGs though so I'll pass on persona. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night looks awesome though!

Ah man, PSP is my second favourite console, PS3 first of course, its a great handheld.

There are loads of random good RPG's just delve into a shelf and you usually pull out some obscure RPG or JRPG, I have FF7 on my PSP as well, and Crisis core which is an amazing game.

Monster Hunter will also keep you occupied for well over a hundred hours :)

How'd you manage to get FFVII on your PSP? And definitely monster hunter, even better if you have friends who own it as well.

Dissidia is a pretty good choice for fresh 'uns at the PSP. It was the introductory game for my brother.

Do you need a PSP GO to download from PSN? Or can you do that with the PSP L&S as well?

You can use any kind of PSP (or even PS3) for downloadable games, as long as you have a wireless connection obviously

Although since the PSP GO only uses Downloadable games it will have alot more of a selection

I have had psp for about 1.5 years now and the best game on it is FFVII: Crisis Core. This was my first game in the FF series and unlike the others that I later played it dosent have the turn based styled fights. Other game that i found greatly entertaining was Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Though this game is better on other consoles its also greatly enjoyable on the psp. God of war is good but i found it to be quite short. Hope this helps

I'm in the same predicament as you, I think final fantasys are on the PSP, don't quote me on that though I could be wrong.
