Saving the world feels big and I dont know about you but in real life I don't get to do anything that big very often. But I get what you are saying. What they should do is make a game that is like what the Big Lebowski (which you should see if you havent)is for movies. The whole damn thing is just the dude trying to get a new rug and getting swept up in stuff that doesnt concern him just because his name is the same as some rich guy. I would love to see a game like that where the goal is simple but the world seems to be keeping you from doing it.

Like, portal (minus the last level) was pretty much just finishing trials to get some god damned cake lol.

I know! why can't I just be a regular soldier? in a regualr squad?

...nothing special...no spec ops or solo missions...just good ol' military combat...

why do most war games out there have you play a character who is a mix between rambo and james bond?

Harvest Moon made me appreciate how boring being normal is. I'd much rather engage Cthulu in gory fisticuffs with the world upon my shoulders, than drudge around, hoeing the same field again and again.

Am I alone in this or is anyone else sick of being the hero that saves the world, the galaxy, or universe is pretty much every damn game out there?

Oh I don't mean I want to be the bad guy trying to destroy the world, I mean I'd much rather just be a dude doing something small, rather being on a quest to destroy the source of all evil, how about I'm a dude on a quest to save one small town from a band of bandits or something?

It's so hard nowadays to sympathise with the hero, he's doing something so big, so huge, racing to save civilisation as we know it from doombots from dimension X, but it would be so much easier to sympathise with a dude just out to save his own.

It's not just video games, it's books, movies, and hell D&D is getting just as bad, every time the DM starts a quest with some wizard or duke or whatever asking the party to go save a sword or something you know "oh it's going to be us saving the world... again" why can't it just be a bloody sword!
If given the choice (in real life mind u) i would be the villian, why? Because the hero has to constantly clean up the place, they get some credit but almost all the of them end up wondering if its worth the trouble, plus as a villian u could rob a bank, then go into hiding in the tropics and spend some of that stolen bounty, lets see Spiderman get away with that.

I think playing as evil characters is fun because you get to serve yourself and only yourself and the nice thing about it is that its fiction!!! yyaaaaayyyy

there are plenty of games about not saving the world, but we don't notice alot because we care enough for the characters that it seems like we are doing just that. InFAMOUS was saving a small city(or taking it over) and GTA games are about people trying to get to the top, but they make us care (Disgea three is about a kid wanting to kill his father for destroying a billion+ hours of game-time...yeah) Yeah its common, but don't overlook the gems nyoro~!

Well seeing as, like many others have expressed their disappointment, you can't be the villain in most games; I thoroughly enjoy being the one man army that takes on the world to save it.

You know what? I actually enjoy saving the world. Its nice seeing a happy ending. I'd say latley at least movies are taking the depressive route. I dont need a depressing artsy "Ohh thats deep" ending. Some of the best endings in gaming are the bleak ones though (Fear 1 anyone?) We dont need prentencious artsy depressing "Thats deep" endings all the time.

They irritate me, yes. I much prefer the choose your own adventure and moral choice deals (ala Bethesda). The save the world games tend to railroad you til you start screaming "Choo Choo!" in your sleep. Ideally I think I'd like to "partake" in some epic, world ending/saving thing but not be the sole focus. Because in real life, everyone that does their part and some is a hero though we often fail to recognize them. Or even those that are never thanked but keep doing their job every day of the week; keeping the wheels of society turning; keeping us safe. It's a shame we're cutting funding for our police, firefighters and teachers but give CEOs bonuses and throw money at our TV idols. One quote stuck with from the humble origin of The Third Age (that LOTR RPG that nobody remembers nor needs to): "For every orc you slay is another hearth that will burn this winter." Er something like that. Basically I want to either be able to bend the world to my will entirely (my way, not the "coolest" way the Devs could think of) or to do my part and enjoy the story unfolding before my eyes.

Some forms of media (comic books for example) are required to have the good guy ultimately triumph.

I was saying this years ago. I agree. A smaller scale game where you have to save a town, or perhaps just one person, or something like that, would be a very nice change of pace.
We saw this in the early 80's and she was always in a different castle.

I like games where the goal is smaller and more personal, like in Red Dead Redemption. John Marston just wants to settle down and live with his family, but the bureau just doesn't like him do they?

YAY! SOMEONE LIKE ME!!!! Yeah, I'm getting tired of it actually.
But actually I would like to destroy the world and stuff like that, I'm tired of being the human who defends everything and everyone "right"

It's way too easy to make saving the world sound fantastic, but, I agree with some of the people here, saving just one person makes it very personal.

It's probably because it's easy.
Other plots are things like "go save your daughter/whatever from being kidnapped" and those types of plots require more emotional development to be meaningful. You need to feel attached to the daughter to really want to save her. (I mean beyoned "I wanna beat this game" as a motivation.) But SAVE THE WORLD kind of skips all that since it's THE WORLD.

I kind of wish there was a game where the "choice" wasnt about being good or bad but more about your motivations and what youre trying to accomplish; but then I realize that the game couldnt have any real closure because it would have to keep the game open for people who want to do it all and then that game would be incredibly hard to market and show off because of the sheer depth. It would also alienate the people that want linear gameplay as opposed to choice and it would probably fall into the same void that Tycho talked about when referring to GTA IV "When I have the choice to do anything, I dont do anything."
