I'm tired of playing violent games.

I personally ascribe to the feeling that 'has violence' is not the same as 'is violent.' Similarly, but unrelated, I don't consider 'is brown' and 'has brown' to be the same thing.

The last game I've played with your definition would probably be Portal and Portal 2. Can't say I have too many that have little to no violence. Puzzle games I guess. There are likely more games that you are looking for on sites like Newgrounds than you know what to do with.

There aren't very many books/movies that are "completely non-violent" either. Conflict is a pretty critical part of storytelling and violence is usually a common outcome.

There are quite a few games that are non-violent in their gameplay, but involve death/dying. Limbo is kinda the prime example here, non-violent gameplay, but your head does fall off if you run into a sawblade. Portal and a virtually every other puzzle game out there also have dying, there may not be blood but you still died. If an enemy person/mob caused that death it's still "violence".

To go without death completely is pretty rare.

Personally, I would classify most games* that don't have violent gameplay to be "non-violent".

*Perhaps some exceptions for games that have extremely violent cut-scenes without any violence in gameplay. I can't think of any at the moment.

Violence is just makes sense when you are eliminating pixels from the screen, just like board games like draughts and go is thought of as a war game smae as chess even if the pieces are round.

I do agree that as games become more realistic so does the scale of violence which is becoming extreme and is starting to get boring as games are less focused on gameplay and more on realism, blood guts and all.

I prefer the Mario cute style and old fashioned arcade graphics which are more abstract

There are plenty of games/ genres like pure platformers, puzzlers, racers, sims and adventure games (including point and clickers) it just depends what actions we are doing and how the pixels of light are moving around the TV screen.

And yet it moves (it's actually called that)
Braid
Limbo doesn't have fighting, but it has scary/violent scenes (A giant spider that chases you)
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 (Old but fun, plus you can kill the citizens when your bored)
Super meat boy
Cogs
Portal

Possibly minecraft, killing is optional, you can play in creative and just build or set the difficulty to peaceful.

I'm guessing you're looking for non-bloody games?
Oh that's entry level stuff. I almost never play any games that are remotely bloody.

I'm looking for completely non-violent, or almost entirely lacking in violence, hardcore games that are worthy of lots of praise.

Final Fantasy games are very, very violent. So is Okami. So is Super Mario, to be honest.

Hardly anyone considers Mario games to be violent though.
Well, they're wrong.

This is looking pretty stark. It looks as if the video games industry relies on violence far too much.

There needs to be a lot more hardcore games that are not violent at all.
I guess all of the games I play are a horrible blood bath then... ?
Hmmmm... yeah, every single one of the games that I consider fun, has "violence" in it, so I am of no help to you.
Sorry =|

Well Quantum Conundrum is coming out in early 2012

Really? -_- this is Portal for retarded. I mean, they're not even trying, it's copying everything!
What? It doesn't use portals, and it's from the creator of the game that Portal is based on.
The puzzles looked like they might get a bit more complicated after a while, but if that's too easy for you then maybe this is more to your taste

I'd also like some help finding some good non-violent games to occupy my time. Because while I do like them, I'm pretty burnt out on them right now.
I faced the same problem a couple of years ago..
My cure was:
Animal Crossing (GC, Wii, and I do think there is a DS-version too..)
Viva Pinata (360)
Little Big Planet (PS3)
The Katamari-games (Well, they are pretty much the same but Katamari Damacy for the PS2 is my absolute favorite, the music is addictive)
Loco Roco (PSP)
Rollercoaster Tycoon (PC)

It's not the biggest list and it may seem like I'm just name-dropping, but there is thought behind it. Because there is one thing that these games share, one underlying feel.. A theme, if you will.
These games will almost certainly cheer you up. They make you feel good and can be, depending on your mindset, very immersive. I usually recommend something from this list whenever people ask about non-violent games.
I know there is a distinct lack of puzzle-games and sports-games.. But it's been so long since I played one that was really good...

Guys,
I wanted your opinion on this non-violent (semi) idea that I have. I want to find a programmer to make it for me. lol
It is based on the black ops engine or something similar.
There is an island and an American scientist is developing a serum to create enhanced aggression and super human fighting abilities in soldiers. There are 200 soldiers stationed on the island. Well, the expirement goes wrong and the whole island is infected with the serum creating crazed men with testoserone out of the roof.
The government is going to have to bomb the island to relieve this threat. They are dangerous. Well, this is when a special ops guy is called in. He has retired because he is sick of violence. He is brought in to alleviate the situation and save lives. He is equipped with a gun that shoots rubberized bullets with a small serum injector to counter the toxin in the crazed soldiers. It would be standard guns offset with new technology that accomodate the new non-lethal ammo. You would literally be shooting folks to save them. They would drop to the ground. Stay there for a bit and with time .. regain themselves and move to an extraction zone. I have thought of tons of new weapons (savers) to implement. Satellite driven gas devices that explode in a large area and send out serum. ect ect ect. Sniper rifles with algorithms to reduce the rubber bullets with small wings before impact to give just the right amount of serum without hurting the person.
This spec op guy cannot kill. So, if he gets killed- it's over. It is a last ditch effort to save the men on this island.
What do you think?
I...guh...I don't even...thread...necromancy...overpowering my rationale...

If you have a Wii, Id try Another Code R. No combat whatsoever, its like playing a book - and I think it has a really good story.

EDIT: Ahahahahaha!! I find it hilarious when threads come back to life! XD

I agree. At least in the case of RPG being violent or not should be optional. That's why I'd like amodern version of a game like Ultima, where you seek for virtues and spiritual and personal improvement, but where you still have violence as an option. Maybe they could even make it so that you get a worse ending if you're violent.

There are so many possibilities! It's a shame the industry after more than thirty years is still obssesed with shoot, shoot, stab, hit...

Non violent games, huh...Lesse...

Uplink (it's a hacking sim that's pretty damn fun)

Harvest moon (It's a farming game series and it's pretty good fun all around. If you end up wanting one with combat and magic, there are the rune factory games)

And you can play minecraft on peaceful mode with no enemies too. Or you can just run from them.

That's just off the top of my head.
