i mainly hate when epeople use its just a game excuse to be a dick in a game. like in fps or mmos, they ruin the game and if you complain they bring out the its only a game excuse.

AAAUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGH!

I agree that it's silly. After all, Silent Hill 2 was "just a game", but has my favorite tragic figure in it (Angela).

I hate it when people say that as a defense for their performance leading to their team losing when playing an online game...

Just because its a game, doesn't give you any excuse to suck at it.

''It's just a movie'' is used far more often.

It's just a way of saying ''it's fiction, don't worry about it''
We can still take it serious as a medium but find the content lacking to immerse us.
Or we just get mad at the game and you need to remind yourself that ''it's just a game''.

But it IS just a game.
Just like it IS just a movie.
Or just a book.
Or song.
If you want a life changing experience, go for religion or a drug addiction, not pretty colors and sound.

The only difference is price.
Pay 60 bucks for a game, yeah, if its shit, you got a right to complain.
Pay 10 bucks plus to sit and groan for 2 hours at a shit movie, too.
Pay.......how much do books cost these days? Probably too much. Anyways, if its a bad book, well, its a book, who cares? Could have gotten it for free at the library.

Anyways, don't take media too seriously, unless you are not getting bang for your buck, then feel free to ***** and moan.

This is true when being applied to criticism, but using it when my sister is flipping out that I'm not letting her kill me on call of duty is still perfectly fine in my books :p

Whether or not you THINK the phrase is devaluing is irrelevent, it IS devaluing because that is how 99.9999999999999999999999999% of persons hearing that phrase will interpret it. Even if they did not, from an objective standpoint, if any one given object or subject is 'just' what it is, then meaning may not be ascribed to it. However, since objects and subjects have meaning, nothing may ever be 'just' what it is.

Also, I never posted anything about the phrase "it's just a game" being used as an excuse for the (usually poor, in this case) quality of a game. That said, my earlier statements apply as much if not more: time, effort, energy and money were all expended to create an interactive experience. I may purchase this experience with money I earned (because piracy is theft and people should have their hands cut off for it), which came from the sacrifice of my time for said money. I may then use my time to (hopefully) enjoy this activity. If the activity is not enjoyable or pleasurable because the interactive experience is faulty in some way, then I have been cheated, thus devaluing my time, effort, energy and money.

Most of the time, it IS just a game. It can move you, sure. But look at the title of this e-zine. 99% of the time, you're playing for a bit of escapism, a chance to wind down at the end of the day. If you're getting wrapped around the axle about winning/losing or convinced that skill at a game is meaningful outside of your enjoyment of said game, you're missing the point.

You mean like in the "The Problem with Dead Space" thread? It's just a game is correct. It's not real life. Sometimes things have to happen in a game/movie/book that are nearly impossible in real life. People will then start saying, "That makes no sense! Blah blah blah...here's why." The simple comeback to that is the truth. It's just a game (or book or movie). If things happened the way they did in real life, all these forms of entertainment would be painfully depressing and boring. Horror stories would have no one getting out alive--or would even exist, as monsters aren't real--actions movies wouldn't get past the opening scene because the hero would be dead, and romance novels would more often than not end with heart break and cheating.

Like that TeamKiller0703 guy? And I quote

"If you are a gamer that plays correctly, but not seriously (video games are not your life), I'm sure you can see the humor in all of this. If you can't, then you care too much about video games."

When the person next to you is screaming and breaking things, I think the line "It's just a game" is justified.

I thought the line "it's just a game" was better used to stop somebody throwing a hand controller out of the window?

Very fair point though mate. Games wouldn't mean half as much if they weren't allowed to be critisized.

Well, the only time I would ever use the "it's just a game" line is when people are taking it too seriously. Take Extra Credits for example. Yes, the majority of the time they make good points and have some pretty good insight. I actually really enjoy the series. Sometimes, however, I feel like they go too deep into the games that they use for examples. Overanalyzing bugs me.

When people get like that, I feel it necessary to use the "it's just a game" thing, though it really depends on which game they're talking about.

Well, when characters survive within two feet of a large explosion, do you never say "it's just a movie"?
If games were taken serious as a medium tomorrow "just games" wouldn't cease to exist. COD is "playing guns" for those of us too old and out of shape/lazy to run around in our front yard to play. And there is no "I got you." "No, you didn't" bullshit. Or saying you had a force field up. (I hated those kids growing up) Want a force field? Buy Halo.

Games being taken serious is good because then games like Shadow of the Colossus might be distributed to more people. I guarantee there is a lot of people out there who would enjoy that game but have no idea about it. It is better to allow some games to be taken seriously than none and keep them as "just games". People aren't stupid. If games suddenly got respect tomorrow, Frogger wouldn't be hanging in museums and Bejeweled wouldn't gain a story mode. The games that want to be "just games" would remain the same and the ones with a bit more of an artistic vision like flower would get recognized as such. The only difference between then and now is that we just don't let flower get recognized now because some gamers even would rather it be seen as "just a game".

I love it when people act like assholes in online games and say "dude, it's just a game" when confronted.
It's the greatest thing ever.

Yeah, I hate when people say "It's just a game". What am I say supposed to say? "Oh shit! I'm playing a GAME!? Why thank you for enlightening me! friggin' twat...."

It's a really condescending way for people to talk about games.

Also, OP have you watched Extra Credits at all, they usually talk about video games as a cultural medium and how games are more than "Just games". seems like something you'd be interested in.

In recent years, it seems as though videogames are starting to release themselves from simply being a form of entertainment and into the realm of being viewed as art. I agree that this term is becoming outdated and irrelevant in regard to most videogames out there

I disagree, I don't think they go too far into games. I mean they've only got like 6 minutes, how far could they go? I think the deep insight they give to games is what makes the series unique, nobody else seems to do that. Also, I don't think the "It's just a game" phrase is ever justified. It's dismisse, devalues the game, and implies that the player is just wasting their time.

When I get pissed during playing a video-game, my family tells me to calm down and they then say "It's just a game." I DON'T CARE IF IT'S "JUST" A FUCKING GAME, IT'S PISSING ME OFF! WHEN SOME KID PISSES ME OFF, YOU DON'T SAY "IT'S JUST A KID!"

...But yeah, it pisses me off too.

Actually, people do use that line applying to the medium they're using to settle down a argument.

It's just art- applying to people upset at the "controversial" nature of the way the artist depicted their work.
It's just a movie - to calm down people who are upset at the plot holes and other parts of the film.
It's just a song - Applying to the fact that you don't need to listen so you can just justify it's just a song.
It's just a game - Can be applied to people who are threatening to kill each other over being a cheat or god-modding oneself.
