Okay, let me explain. I just finished reading the thread about the guy who followed a guy home and used a gun to try to steal his MW3 copy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.322205-Modern-Warfare-3-Fan-Fends-Off-Really-Stupid-Thief]. The point of this thread is, I'm petrified. I have the $150 collector's edition of Skyrim preordered, not the normal version, so I would be more likely to be robbed than anyone. I really want to go pick this game up and play it all night long, but now I really feel like I should wait till the morning for this reason.

Thoughts? Are my fears valid or over-hyped? I've never been to a midnight launch so I don't know what to expect...

Find yourself being mugged for your copy of Skyrim?

No problem!

As a newly appointed Dovahkiin, dragon shout your assailant's ***** ass into the stratosphere.

Remember:

'Fus Ro Dah', and muggers won't get far.

Yea my fear was that since it's a sold out collector's edition that they might want that over the game itself. But thanks! Hopefully I am.

I do hope you're kidding. NO ONE will be willing to steal that game from you. Trust me. You'll be fine.

Don't think you have much to worry about,as Matt said,it does seem like something that isn't likely going to repeat itself any time soon. But just in case, you could always bring a friend with you.

Gather a posse together and walk into the store wearing baggy clothes and sideways hats.
Yo.

Seriously though, I don't think there's anything to worry about.
The first time I've heard of someone robbing someone else for a video game is...when Modern Warfare 3 came out...

Are people willing to risk their jobs for Skyrim yet? I had a guy at work ask me if I could sell him a copy of MW3 under the table at 8pm monday. I asked him "Are you that obsessed that you can't wait 5 hours for the official release?". Nasty words were exchanged, I told management, he was considered a security problem and COULD get fired for even suggesting it.

Patience, young padwan! The daylight hours are your friend. Just take the usual precautions, and all will be well.

If someone tries to steal your copy (which we both know they won't) give it to them and then call the police.

Then call Bethesda. They will get you a new copy + some sort of amazing item/adventure/thing.

Then post a thread about the wrap up.

At the risk of sounding condescending, Skyrim will attract a different sort of... clientele than Call of Duty.

The people that will be interested in owning a $150 collectors edition of Skyrim, will not be willing to commit a felony (armed robbery) to avoid long shopping queues.

The Eldar Scrolls are geared towards an audience that are content with reading long passages of lore, pouring over stats pages, creating and installing and fiddling with technically complicated mods into their game. Anyone who wants a Collectors Edition of Skyrim will most likely have the means to purchase it with their own money, and the sense not to try and aquire it violently at gunpoint.

To completely put your mind at ease, the publicity from this story of the police catching a thief trying to steal a game will probably act as an excellent deterrant for anyone else considering doing the same thing.

Unless you live in a particularly unsafe and nerdy neighborhood, there isn't much to worry about.

I'm worried about muggers too. I live in an area filled with lots of teen and early-twenties aged men, and the Best Buy is in the worst neighborhood. I've actually heard gunshots a few times driving by there. My advice: travel with friends. It's not like people are going to initiate a brawl just for a copy of Skyrim. Unfortunately, all of my friends are too occupied to escort me into Best Buy, so I'm forced to go in alone. Here's my (completely insane but it could work) plan: Dress up in my suit of real chain mail, plate armor and helmet, and buy my copy that way. With any luck, I'll be considered too ridiculous to rob from. Even if someone tries, they'll get a metal gauntlet to the face.

Edit: Someone else thought of this too?!? Maybe this isn't so ridiculous.

Yeah, i wouldn?t worry too much, especially after what happened to the last guy who tried it.

you know your neighbourhood best, so you should know the chances of someone trying to rob you of a game at gunpoint though.
