I mean, at the end of the day you can't say you didn't try.

If they want to spend $500.00 on a giant DRM machine then go for it. It's their money, and you can snicker from the sidelines when they realize the horrible long term effects of their choices.

Right, it's already pretty common knowledge that Microsoft have done goof'd. More than done goof'd. So I'm pretty much decided on getting a PS4. Eeeeeexcept maybe not. The people I know are massive Xbox fanboys. No matter how hard I try to describe why they shouldn't get an Xbox they listen, seem to take it into consideration, but then basically give me the middle finger and say, 'nah - Xbox is just better'. How the fuck do I convince people like this. They may be fucking stupid, but they're the only people I really talk to, mainly because they're an entire group of people. I need a genuine answer here folks, not just 'how to convince them? Don't'. (Context: I have a great PC too. Should I just stick it out with Steam for a year? That was my original plan until the PS4 actually started to look good. Also, I've had the 360 for some 7/8 years. So have they).
First, tell them the facts. It is $100 cheaper, the games look better, effectively communicate why the DRM and other stuff is bad.

Second, use their blind faith to your advantage. Chances are if they are Xbox fan boys they got that way playing Halo. Let them know that while Halo is on the Xbox, the guys who made Halo have moved to the PS4.

Show them the PS4 games and let Sony's very effective marketing machine work for you.

If that doesn't convince them then it is probably impossible. I would seriously recommend against getting a Xbox one over a PS4, however. That sets a bad precedent. If they can bully you into spending $500 on a console that you do not want then what other shit will they try to pull?

I would suggest that if they really are friends then console choice doesn't really matter.

Is playing games with them more important than "standing up" to an imagined assault on consumers? If yes, get the Xbox One. If the answer is no, hang out with them to do other things or go over to their places to game with them.

Trying to convince them to switch will just annoy them, probably more than it annoys you.

Well you could start by not being such a hypocrite and after that get over it its just a console. The drm that steam and the xbox are using is not all that different except that the xbox's is a fuck of a lot more consumer friendly.

If they dont share your same taste in a console then oh well its not really a big deal. Let them buy whatever they want and dont keep trying to convince them that your choice is better then theirs. If you keep doing that its going to be them that tell you to fuck off for being such an annoying twit. Its their money to spend and if they want to buy an xbox let them. That does not mean that you have to buy one if you dont want to though. There is more to life then games.

How would you feel if somebody wouldnt shut up about how crappy steam was and kept trying to convince you to buy something else instead?

Get the system you want, you will make new friends. If your mates give you shit about it, just tell them you don't like being controlled but corporate schmucks.

Do you want my honest opinion? This shouldn't be an issue to begin with. You can still be friends with them, even thought you have a different consoles.

You've done your duty as a friends by telling them the pros & cons of the upcoming consoles. Whether they want to listen or not it's out of your control. But like I said, you've done your duty as a friend.

If majority of your friends are going to get a Xbox and if you really enjoy your time spending with them, then get a Xbox. Not really worth punishing yourself in terms of social life over video games console.

Because at the end of the day, it just a video game console.

I don't know how old you are, but your friends sound unbelievably juvenile, as well as other less pc adjectives. So seriously, get better friends. Sure it is silly to break up with them over a video game console, but ultimately their attitude reveals their character, and there's nothing positive to be said about it. People are entitled to their opinions, but anyone who simply refuses to even listen or consider other viewpoints is a person that isn't worth your time. So do yourself a favor, get the system you want, and hang out with people that it's actually pleasant to be around.

How exactly is the Xbox One more consumer friendly than steam? You can buy half a dozen games on Steam for the price of one Xbox game, and even brand new titles can be acquired online either through Steam or Amazon for a minimum of 33% off. So again, how is the Xbox One more consumer friendly?

That's how I feel about this situation as well. It is really not a big deal. Friendships > "stupid console war"

Easy; buy a PS4.
The Xbone is going to fuck over it's customers royally. I foresee a pretty major DDoS attack of Microsoft's authentication servers early on, and everyone who buys an Xbone is going to be unable to play games on it for a period of time.

Your friends are going to be negatively effected very quickly, and will eventually jump ship to just be free of all of the hassles of the Xbone.

Well, I stood up for my values when PS3 launched because I saw it as the system with the best long term potential, and that wasnt easy, at all. Everyone I knew either got a Wii or a 360 but I was positive the PS3 would be the better system. That shit was rough for the first 2 years. Haha, PS has no games, rah rah rah. However, right around the 2 year mark suddenly all my friends were having their Wii's collect dust and were wanting to play on my Playstation because they couldnt afford another console just yet. Even a couple of my 360 friends began doing it, a couple due to RRoD's. Then around the 3 year mark they all started buying PS3s and were upset they didn't have backwards compatibility. I was constantly called "lucky" - but it wasn't luck, it was being a smart consumer. At the end of this generation, I have bought 1 console that had a stumble out of the gate but then got every bit as awesome as I knew it would. However, they have all bought 2 or 3 and pretty much only use 1. Don't think I didn't rub that shit in as payback for first 2 years either. "I wish my console would just die and quit working, but silly me, I bought a PS3" Hehe. I even got to flip it on Wii friends "But Wii has no games!" They always countered with "yeah they do" then I would say "Like M&M racing, carnival games? You hear they are working on a 'ball-in-a-cup' game? I bet that's exciting for you."

I know you don't want to hear it but you can't convince them if their counter is "nah, Xbox is better" without saying why. That statement alone means that 'Xbox' branding is more important than what the device actually is and does. You cannot convince them and you will only look desperate and needy trying. So your best option, in my opinion, is to have some conviction. Buy a PS4 when it comes out if that is what you want and let them rush to buy an Xbox. Your invested money is a lot safer, I can guarantee. You are investing in hardware, they are investing in a sticker. Microsoft only has the brand loyalty of tech ignorant people who probably dont watch reveals... probably because they don't even know what E3 is, to rely on this gen. That is a bad way to kick off a console cycle. Microsoft have already been talking about selling the Xbox to Samsung or someone and getting out of it all together. That was announced before the reveal.

This generation will be the first time I don't buy a console on release since the PS1/N64 debut. I do plan on buying a PS4 and probably a Wii-U if Nintendo steps up but it will be a year or 2 before I do either. I just spent $1300 building me a new PC rig for this gen. I honestly don't know which I'll buy first if Nintendo steps up to bat against Sony as then both will be awesome.

Do you really want to play multiplayer with them or something? Probably not since you were just going to stick with Steam. If you like the PS4 then get a PS4, at least then you could talk about multiplatform console exclusives. Are you worried that they'll stop being your friends if you get a PS4? If they're really so petty then they probably aren't good friends.

The DRM is similar but it's not the same. Microsoft is going to have exclusive control over how you buy your games on your Xbox (at least through the digital distribution portion) while Steam has to compete with Origin, GOG, Green Man Gaming, etc., so you probably won't ever see a sale, and almost certainly not as generous as 50-75% off that you see in Steam sales. Then there's the whole worthless without an internet connection thing (yes, Steam works without internet, I have done it many times).

Screw your friends.
Then again, I'm pretty asocial and have Aspergers, so I have no qualms with cutting off long-term relationships at the drop of a hat without remorse.

On second thought, maybe you shouldn't listen to me...

However, I don't think they will switch once they realize they bought a shitty console because consoles are designed for budget gaming. If they drop $400 on an Xbone, they probably won't want to drop another $400 on a PS4 to switch. They'll probably stick it out for as long as they can, instead.

If you are seriously considering ditching your bros due this, I would contemplate just getting new friends, they deserve better friends and so do you. If it's a rant to vent, carry on.

Either way, if they are still thinking to buy an xbox one after the E3, there is nothing you can do to change their minds most likely.

Have a bunch of friends that don't agree with you, you want to toss them away because of it. Of course if I had a friend that I disagreed with, then he went on a site and told a bunch of people that I was stupid, that would piss me off. Me and him would have a nice long chat about that one. That Xbox crap isn't any of your concern, you are not buying on.

don't.

it's their money, their choice of a console and if they prefer it even though it's an inferior product, so be it. You told them how you feel about it, they did not agree. It's not your place to force your views onto them, nor do you have the right to tell them how to spend their money.

I mean, it's just a games console. Definitely not something to lose a friendship over.

you cant talk a group into anything , but all groups of males will have an alpha work out who it is, then either beat the crap out of him and while standing over his bloody unconscious form calmly announce "xbox be for bitches we going with the PS , any of you got a problem with that?" or if you cant do that you need to make him come around to your way of thinking , dont bother trying to convince him you have to give him evidence that proves your point of view and let him work it out for himself so he thinks its his own idea, when he swaps the rest will swap over.

Well here's the problem with your thread. I don't give a shit about your friends, as you don't mine, and I think most others have the same approach as me. I would rather you stuck by your guns, for what I see as your own good, and for the good of the industry at large. But if your friends are such an integral part of your gameplay experience that buying a PS4 would essentially exclude you from every conversation, maybe that's a judgement call only you can make.
