I'm not interested in having children. I think we're getting to the point where even having more mortal children is going to be problematic for humanity at large.

I'm not sure I'm down with living forever, especially if civilization goes to shit, but I'll take Elvish immortality. I'm down with eternal youth, as long as it is possible for me to die.

You'd live long enough to see the laws change or to get the money for a bribe and second operation. Nothing is static, everything dynamic.

Not that I'm interested in children or relations. I'd spend my time just being happy to have time to pay attention to life's little details and the big coherences of centuries. I just hope the wars, a deadly disease, a fatal accident or something else don't reach me too soon, but as you imply immortality I think I also should imply I almost live forever.

In fact, if I had a giant sex urge I'd still do it and wait a couple of decades until hormone therapy or an equivalent is out that either removes the sex drive or "shifts" it to something else. Orgasmic feeling when eating chocolate, anyone? And until then I'd wank my heart out.

'Course I would. Who needs sex when I have a shot at eternity? Hell, who needs sex, period? Either way I end up with more time for videogames.

This is a debate?

Seriously, I HATE kids. All the time in the world and no worry about having to pop out kids? I'm in.

I would keep some sperm handy, then do it, then get my special lady friend knocked up when we are both ready. Then she can have the immortality serum/elixir/what have you.
This is a very good option.

If im immortal, i might live long enough to get some weird device implanted into me, that not only allows me to reproduce, but makes me truly immortal, and makes me want to be immortal so absolutely yes.

And even if i cant have children i can still adopt right? And why does having a vasectomy mean you cant have sex? And isn't vasectomy a reversible progress? And even if it isnt reversible, a vasectomy can fail. And with an infinite amount of time it WOULD fail.
My thoughts exactly. Immortality is worth anything if/since it's really possible to find a way to become invincible by doing research while you're (near) immortal.

Sure why not I have no problem with not having children and I dont want to have any children exposed to my parents so yeah I would then I would go live in the mountains for a while and watch the world collapse in on itself and after the nuclear holocaust I would come out of seclusion and begin a new world order.
Me too although I would go for more of a explorer's life around the cosmos than try to "rule" over anything. I mean come on, we can barely control ourselves, ruling over others is so immature and pointless in the long term. Definitely not comparable to interdimensional adventures, technoscientific research, artistic endeavors and philosophical ponderings. ;)

To mirror the sentiments of almost everyone in this thread:
just being made sterile: done.
never having sex again: nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo thanks.

EDIT: although it would probably get really boring, I think the draw of being immortal would be to see the world and people around you change while you remained a constant, I suppose it would be one hell of a power trip. if everyone was immortal then nothing would ever change. So if it was just me being made this offer yeah i'd do it, if it was everyone i'd still do it i guess but i'd probably be less enthusiastic about the whole thing.

131)5 February 2011 1:27 am by higgs20:

get it done then adopt? just a thought.
Again, my thoughts exactly. It's totally worth it for a weird person such as myself. I can even picture criminals getting punished by forcefully becoming immortal as a sort of punishment for their crimes. That's one fate I would bare quite easily across the eons. ;)

If I can live forever, I'm sure that I will eventually run into an alien race that will teach me to shag without my junk.
So true, the situation is much like in the previous comment that I cited.

I would take immortality any time of the day. I've always been the lone wolf, so being an immortal loner wouldn't make much difference anyway. Also, I could do so much more things and in time and with efforts achieve omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence, so that would invalidate the point about not having children since I can then be able to create new life forms which could be like children to me... then I would move on and repeat the process ? experiments never get boring, they just get more interesting and varied. >:)

Also, fighting and/or befriending other immortals, in case someone else also became immortal, would be so ubercool. I could go on doing so many cool things. The possibilities really are limitless. I could even recreate the people who I deem interesting to talk to and interact with from any remains and make them immortal too. ;)

EDIT: Added more quotes and some additional thoughts after them.

P.P.S. I can bear immortality any time of the day because I never get bored... there's always things to do and thoughts to think... The benefits of and possibilities granted by immortality far outweigh the downsides from my personal perspective. ~me.

Excuse me why I swipe that very opportunity and run for the hills before the suckers realise I want to be sterilised anyway. Hell I?ll take it just so I can be sterilised without having to face the doctors and possible rejection, seems like a pretty cool brand of ?immortality? anyway.

Done and done. I would do unspeakable things for immortality. Being unable to reproduce is barely an issue.

You mean I would be immortal, AND not have to worry about condoms?! hell yea!
...on a more serious note, the real questions is whether I would want to live forever at all. Honestly, I am okay with dying eventually and I'd rather have fate decide when than a guy with a meat cleaver or possibly a shot gun.

No, I want to be able to have kids. If my kids were born immortal, then technically couldn't they not grow older then a newborn, and by chance if that rule of yours broke and they aged, then they would be 'fixed' and couldnt have kids anyway, so what your saying is incorrect...unless im reading this wrong.

Either way, nah. The only circumstance I could think of wanting to take it would be if I am older and don't care for having kids at that point.
But...I want children, so yeah.

Can I not just have infinite condoms?

If not, then screw you. There's no way I'm letting a doctor rustle my jimmies.

Ok how does this work for those of us who already have had children?

I have no problem with having my tubes tied (no more expensive BC and fights with the insurance!)
Removing all my female sex organs and never being able to have sex again? I will pass

Immortality would suck. Even more so if the people that you hate are immortal to.

Yes
Of course
Assuming the no sex thing means I won't have a sex drive in the first place.

Just the ability to reproduce? Fuck yes! I was gonna do that anyways, this is just a bonus.

But, the ability to have sex at all? No way, that's too much fun.
