In FF7, all of the characters die dozens of times, but we refuse to use a Fenix Down on Aeris.

Also, no one had a soft potion for Battle Cat's dad, apparently.

In Dead Rising, zombie bites spread the infection, but unless you get the true ending, Frank never zombifies, despite being bitten dozens of times.

Johnson is still alive in Halo 2 (and that two second conversation doesn't count as an explanation).

Whistler somehow missed himself at point blank range.... wait.... game impossibilities, right.

To be fair, all the other times, your characters are just knocked out. (Yes, yes, getting zapped by lightning and set on fire SHOULD kill them, but it doesnt, okay?)

Interested enough that I downloaded the demo. In the hour I spent playing, I managed to get to the Bowser/Wart/Wily battle, and died a total of 86 times. There's something bizarrely addictive about the way it doesn't help you at all, and at every turn, does things in the least intuitive way possible, yet I kept playing!
Well, if you ever need help, look for someone named cloud8745 when looking for IWBTG vids. It's quite good, but in humorous aspect, it's supposed to be random.

As a retort, I would like to add that the big bad at the end has an attack that causes the sun to grow large enough to encompass the part of earth that you are standing on, and burn you directly. This attack also destroys the rest of the solar system.

You survive. The earth survives.

The explanation for that still doesn't make sense. The idea was that when he shot himself, he'd already begun to change... but blade has silver bullets, so he wouldn't have healed...

anyway back to games, the general lack of individualism for non-story line characters. Seems that you'll kill the same enemy no less than 500 times in a decent game, and then if he looks a bit different, chances are he's more skilled than the other one. would be nice to see a pleb showing more accuracy than a captain just because he is naturally more accurate.

Most modern FPS and Action-adventure games: Inexplicible wolverine factor.

I prefer a HP meter to every single hero I play being wolverine, capable of taking fifteen headshots, being near death, but if I sit still for ten seconds I get fully healed again! Who DECIDED this should be the way to go for games? CoD2, Gears of War, Halo 2 and 3, Uncharted and to a slightly lesser degree, Resistance: Fall of Man. These are just the ones of the top of my head too, and only Resistance actually tries to explain your mega-healing factor away.

Ah, I just remembered what I wanted to add to my last one also.
How the hell is it that you have on armor and are supposed to be some super-soldier and you can't take a hit to the body with the butt of a gun if your damn shield is gone in Halo (at least the first two as I haven't played the third)? Are you that much of a wimp? Sure, I couldn't take one well, but I'm sure that a swift hit with a gun butt to the body without shields and armor wouldn't off me for good.

Johnson's survival of the first Halo game is explained in more than 2 seconds in the books. It's actually a decent explanation, but it doesn't change the fact that he can die while playing the game, and have him standing right around the corner with the next batch of marines.

Well, you're referring to a bash with a gun butt from someone strong enough to flip over a vehicle. I imagine with that much driving force behind it even a Furby or plush Pokemon would cause significant harm.

That system was in response to backing away from a fire fight to go look for more health and stop forcing people to quick save every second so they can beat a game on a higher difficulty setting. The medpack searching really isn't any more realistic as bullet wounds tend to require hours of surgery instead of a mere first aid pack or health canteen to fix. If you dislike it, try beating Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and it's expansions on Hard. It is a slow and frustrating experience. You will invent whole new chains of expletives when you die in Sniperville for the hundred thousandth time.

In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for the GBA, sometimes I can drop down about 20 feet and sustain mild damage, but if I dangle from a ledge and gingerly release myself two feet off the ground in an area the game doesn't want me to go, then I flop and die.

Any boss battle where you have to shoot 20 missiles at an open cockpit and the pilot still survives to fight you again... and again ~_~

I'm looking at you, Metal Gear Solid.

Really? What was the justification?

I saw my brother beat it on Legendary, which had a scene of him and and elite fighting over a rifle seconds before the ring blew up (Hold me, baby!). Even if there had been a functional ship next to him and he'd started running for it as soon as the camera cut away, I still don't see how he could've survived the blast.

EDIT: Wait! Let me guess! Did the gel layer absorb the impact?

Yeah, but isn't your character supposed to be that strong also? But are we talking about flipping a vehicle back over or flipping it over from standard position or flipping it as in sending it flying into the air? Because the former is probably something a moderately athletic person can due (from the shape of a car being rounded some and unstable when on it's top or side).

Gears Of War last boss on insane. That guy can take like 1000000 bullets in his head and even with a friend he is like a wall with a china gun ( and yes, i know you have to blow the kryll away)

Ratchet and Clank Series
How is it he can hold so many guns and weapons on such a small body, although i allways figured it was just the handle or something and pressing a button caused it to expand
Actually, if you look closely at the weapons in Going Commando when they come out (like in first person view) they actually do expand from Ratchet's hand.

I always noticed that in Fire Emblem games, if you get your Defense high enough, you can have a unit tank an entire enemy legion - with no weapon equipped - and take no damage. And FE probably isn't the only game to do that, either.

An impossible thing to do in a video game?
Kill all the guards in the COD 4 level "All Ghillied Up" without SloMo.
Talking of Call of Duty 4. Just how many soldiers can squeeze into a small farmhouse? The respawning bad guys were a tad out of place, especially for a game preoccupied with authenticity.
That's Call of Duty for you though. I really dislike the constant spawning of enemies, especially on Veteran difficulty. It makes the game extraordinarily difficult. Didn't stop be from beating the game, but it nearly did.

As for impossible moments, I guess almost every FPS since the genre started. No way a guy can carry a shotgun, a machinegun, a rocket launcher, and a gattling gun, plus all the ammo. Also: Extra lives.

In Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64, I remember having the Golden Gun, but I would only aim for the hands or feet. Always fun to see somebody die instantly after only being shot in the foot.

Jet Force Gemini. The whole game was run&gun for the most part until right before the end of the game where it decided to make you run around all 20-something planets with EACH of your 3 characters to find every little piece of your big space ship to chase the final boss through space. Oh not that it even gives you any hints as to where any are. It's kinda like "You have 29 pieces to find throughout the galaxy. Go.
i still have jet force gemini, and i like the game, but i have to agree that whe u fight the final boss mizar, it really is a pain in the ass to find all of the ship parts. also, what the hell was with the drone nightclub?
