Logically, the solution is to kill both of them, since not killing him invalidates the entire mission and likely results in my death either immediately or after he's done with the kid, killing him alone dramatically increases the likelihood of killing me someday (with relatively low base likelihood of said child deciding that the parent deserved to die at the time), and, being the victor in this instance, it probably wouldn't be that hard for me to claim that the guy used the kid as a decoy or somesuch before killing me.

That said, the morality is somewhat annoying.

If I've just gone through a long journey, hell-bent on revenge, this guy is still dying. The kid being there just makes in more interesting.

First, make sure the kid can't leave. Then, incapacitate this guy. Break his arms and legs or something, so he's in a great deal of pain, AND can't move. Then, say some obligatory evil dialogue. Then, brutally kill his kid right in from of him, in a really gruesome fashion. Then, more obligatory dialogue, THEN, kill this guy.

Depending on how I was wronged,

Serious Wronging- Kill child, Kill Subject of Revenge
Medium Wrongdoing- Challenge father to duel to death when child is asleep, Kill Bill Style
Minimum Wrongdoing - Wait till child is out of room, kill father

I would freeze up for a few minutes, run off the boat, get shot twice, and forget who I am.

Someone should get the reference.

If I hate this guy so much I need him dead, I'm not worried about his kid. They're both dead. If this scenario takes place in a fantasy genre, I will slay them both and create a reputation for being a ruthless avenger. If it is current, I kill them both and blow up the entire house.

I'd kill the kid first so he doesn't have to see his father die. No witnesses is a simple rule for most homicidal maniacs. Kids don't make a difference (then again I hate kids).

Isn't this the same thing as the Shogun Assassin guy? I think he kept his child with him through all of his adventures of killing Ninjas and stuff.
Only this scenario is the other way around.

OT: I'd take out the wrongdoer, and raise the child myself to be one hell of an assassin. Then I'd betray him and it would be as if hell rose to the surface of the earth as my own Revenge-fueled protege hunts me down. Then a big showdown, where I beg for a merciful release from my inner demons and past wrongs, he inflicts me with a fatal wound and we have a quick heart to heart before I take my last breath. (Cliche as all hell, but how awesome would it be?)

It depends on what I think he is capable of. If I believe he would be the kind to kill me while distracted by honor, I would kill him the instant I entered the room and saw him without so much as a second thought. I would have to kill the child too. The kid would have been in the care of a madman up to this point, I wouldn't put it past the guy to have taught his kid to shoot me in the back while I'm not looking.

If I think he is an honorable enemy, I would sit down at the opposite end of the table from him and ask if he would like to fight now, or wait until his child has gone to sleep. Either way, he isn't making it out alive.

Tell the father to remove his child from sight, and then fight to the death.
If he refuses, then kill the father anyway, since he was only using the child as a shield for himself.
Then quickly send the child to therapy.
