Me and my friends have turned certain characters into lifelong legends. For instance, Julius from Saints Row.
Basicly, Julius has an imaginary friend called Troy. In the mission "Reclaimation", my friend shot at Julius and managed to make him leave the team before the mission had properly started. We played through the mission, pausing only to light ourselves on fire and chase Troy about saying; "infected. New zombie" every time we caught him. Then we wanted to see what it was like with only Julius, and for some reason, it was much more funny. He got in the car and waited a couple of seconds before saying, out of nowhere; "Troy, you worry too much. The kid'll be fine" and as soon as we got there, said; "don't worry, playa! You stick with Troy and me, and we're gon' tear these bitches apart."
After that, we imagined what it would be like if every line of dialogue with Troy had been Julius talking to himself. The scene after Reclaimation with all the saints in the church was particularily funny. Normaly, Julius asks Troy to take down the Vice Kings, to which he replies; "not a chance." In our messed up version, it goes like this.
"Troy, you take on the Vice Kings."
He pauses a moment.
"Fuck you say?"
Jonny Gat steps up.
"Fuck that. I'll take the Vice Kings."
It takes up entirely new meaning, doesn't it? And that's only one of the many long running jokes we have with games, books, tv shows and movies.
