So after 3 years of faithful service, my Playstation 3 controller has finally broken. The first and only time I have ever thrown my PS3 controller, and it breaks.
Now he can join my other broken controllers in my drawer whilst I search for a replacement, RIP controller, sleep well with your two broken 360 controller brethren.

(If you're curious as to which game caused this, it was Soul Calibur 5. That game has some real bullshit in it)

So this here thread is also to honour the noble sacrifices of your controllers, please share their stories, so they will not go unforgotten

I used to chew wires when I was younger. Surprisingly, all of my SNES controllers lasted.
Other than that... nothing's really broken. My 360 controllers are getting tired and the battery packs are falling out fucking constantly, but that's what 4 years of use will do to you I guess.

None have broken but after about 10 years of use the left stick of my PS2 controller gets jammed veery now and then.

This can lead to either a character running when they shouldn't or not moving at all when they really need to.

I haven't had any controllers completely break, but I did have a used gamecube controller whose c-stick went on the fritz after a few months, and a used PS3 controller that stopped holding a charge after about a month.

Note to self, stop buying used controllers. They all suck.

Well PS3 Sixasis's (Sixaxes?) are pretty fragile, bits of mine have fallen off and several of the buttons, and both analog (or is it analogue?) sticks get stuck on a regular basis. Also, I haven't used them in a while, having upgraded to the infinitely more durable Dualshock 3s, and whenever I do get them out they seem to be covered in this strange layer of grease.

My old PS2 and PS1 controllers never broke though.

I also broke a friend's controller once, having spent a night at his house, without sleeping, I was naturally grumpy the next day, and threw his Sixaxis on the floor when another guy kept pressing the PS button on a different one (which pauses the game and brings up a menu if you aren't aware).

Fucking. Shao. Kahn. In the new Mortal Kombat the last fight with him I fucking lost it and smashed my entire fucking room. Just thinking about it is pissing me off.

The rest just died of old age, but not the one, oh that poor controller... and everything else.

Never had one break, but some of my PS3 controllers have become a real pain to use. One creaks whenever I operate the thumbstick, which is all the time. Another seems to be stuck tilted slightly upward, meaning I have to hold it in the neutral position to keep my characters from moving.

hehe 3 years for a pad is good going, for me when I used PC pads on emulators before swapping over to 360 slim pads and arcade sticks.

Most modern pads have crappy build quality on their d-pads, but many 3rd party pads especially PC pads don't last 2 minutes with oldschool games like shmups and fighters, where the d-pads would break doing quarter circles and the thin layer of metal on button membranes would rub away in 3-6 months playing shmups and button mashers.

never tossed a controller hard enough to break it.

how ever, i had some NES controllers that stopped working after years of faithful service, and more recently, a 360 controller that was barely a year old that went to shit on me :/

I think I went through about 5 PS2 controllers. One I literally snapped in half over the arm of my chair.

I once had a PS2 controller which had a square button that would not always perform at optimum capacity.

After it made me fail at a racing game 4 times in a row I took it outside and beat it to death with a sledgehammer.
It felt good.

My dog chewed over the cord of my SNES controller when she was a puppy. It was a shame since we only had one, we did get a new one shortly after though so it wasn't a big deal. We did have a puppy to ply with after all.

All my Nintendo 64 controllers have a really worn down controller stick. Mario Party really did a number on those things. I still remember playing Pedal Power, Paddle Battle and Tug 'O' War. I used to get deep wounds in my palms from that too.

Going to have to retire my old x-ray purple N64 controller, the standard grey one still works passably.

The only other controller that's come close to dying was my MadCatz GameCube controller, but it's my favourite (it has great rubber grips and snappy buttons) so I keep repairing it by performing inexpert but effective surgery. I once bought a Chinese knockoff GC controller and scavenged it for parts, taking the button pads out and putting them into my MadCatz controller. It's still working and I've had it since I got my GameCube in about '02.

Yep, I'd say that sounds about right. I believe I ended up sacrificing a controller to SC: IV.

Been a while since I've broken a controller, pretty much every one of them has been for the 360.

I think one of the Assassin's Creed games claimed one. SC: IV - as I mentioned - got another. I've even chucked one out the window, but I forget which game I was playing. Dark Souls tried to claim another one, but I had only rented the game and decided it'd be best to simply return it (about 2 hours after renting it :p) rather than bust a controller for it.

I miss my old Original Gamcube controller. I just ended up using it too much. Now all I have is that shitty third party controller with the stiff c-stick.

Who knows where to buy gamecube controllers?

Its weird, I never found Soul Calibur 4 that bad, except for Tower of Souls, but that was an optional mode. Soul Calibur 5 though just pissed me off immensely , mainly because it has all this bullshit juggling (far worse than Tekken ever was) and if I fuck up once, I lose half my damn health bar. Fuck you Nightmare and fuck you Elysium and your bullshit Super move that takes away a quarter of my health whilst im on the damn ground
