Hello Escapists,

I am depressed at the little amount of reading I've been doing lately and I could really use a good book recomendation. Something enjoyable and compelling that really hooks you.

I usually like pulpy adventure fiction, light hearted, funny Fantasy and dark science fiction that isn't cyberpunk.

EDIT: Since I'm looking for something NEW, here's my big bad DO NOT SUGGEST list of authors since I've already read most of their stuff...

David Eddings
Stephen King
Bernard Cornwall
Jasper Fforde
China Meiville
H.P. Lovecraft
Terry Pratchett
Fritz Lieber
Neal Stephenson
R. Scott Bakker
David Gemmel
Stephen Brust
Brent Weeks
Stephen R. Donaldson
Ursula K. LeGuin
Neil Gaiman
Cormac McCarthy
J.K. Rowling
Tad Williams
J.R.R. Tolkien
George R.R. Martin
Kurt Vonnegut
Christopher Moore

And here are some I am NOT very fond of, so similarly don't suggest them...

Tom Clancy
Clive Cussler
Dan Brown (Bad history is BAD)
Micheal Chrichton
Phillip K. Dick
Robert Jordan
R.A. Salvatore
Anne Rice

Im sorry Im not much of a book person but I can give you a sterling recommendation of Louis L'amore's Last of the Breed. I seriously didnt put the book down except to eat, sleep, and bathe.

Sorry to completely ignore your criteria, but I would definitely recommend a novel by Donna Tartt called "The Secret History". It's about a group of college students studying latin and the aftermath of their murder of a class mate. Seriously the best book I've ever read.

Not a big Chrichton fan... I loved Jurrasic Park and Timeline, but his books are to science heavy and all have basically the same conflict "things run amok and people die"

Get the dread empire trilogy by Glen Cook.

Or get the black company series by the same author.

I have been re-enjoying the Temeraire books by Naomi Novik. They are set in England during the Napoleonic Wars, amongst the British Air Corps. Air Corps? Yeah, they have dragons, so the flying part of the army is the Air Corps. The dragons are fuly sentient, too, not just simple animals.

Snow Crash is a good choice, if I could persuade you to tolerate more cyberpunk. Well, it's on the line between cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk. It's not like the Martix. It's also really interesting: deals with ancient gods, dead languages, and thought viruses. It's got style, humor, and memorable characters. I'd be rereading it now, but I lent it to my room mate who's studying in Ottawa for the Summer.

It's good.

The Foot Book?

But seriously, you could always read a classic. The Great Gatsby is supposed to be good, no matter how much I personally despised it.

I've heard good things and I've been meaning to check it out.

Nice you see you back as well mshcherbatskaya, haven't seen you around in awhile.

Dresden Series by Jim Butcher
Dirk Gentry by Douglass Adams
I would suggest hitchhikers guide but if you haven't read that yet then I will have no other choice then to smack you.

The two books I most recently finished were Angels & Demons (loved it) and American Psycho (loved it, but my God is it ever messed up).

I highly recommend both.

I'm not sure about compelling, but for funny Fantasy, I'd recommend The Belgariad, by David Eddings. The story is deliberately standard fantasy fare (though still well-done), but the characters and dialogue are fantastic.

I notice the Jurassic Park formula a lot in Chrichton's writing, especially in Prey. He was a good writer though - his books were all familiar rides, but they were enjoyable ones. Sad he's dead. He was "only" 66.
