You'll probably enjoy the S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise, (and 'Metro 2033'). They're not the best examples of great games in terms of mechanical prowess, but they've got great atmospheres that I have been unable to find anywhere else.

I can't even play that game now, i got stuck in

the basement with the flooding and the footsteps that follow you around

and then I read on a forum about stuff chasing you later on in the game... that's when I checked out.

Amnesia looks dull yes, and that was why I was apprehensive to buy it. When I did though, it made it to my top favorite games list (along with ME2, Garry's Mod, and Red Dead Redemption)

That to me was easily the scariest part of the game. If you can get through that... well, there's a few more creepy as fuck parts but seriously, the part you're at was the worst for me.

OP: I'd definitely say give Penumbra a try. Both 1 and 2 are quite scary for the first half or so, and once you're used to it and it's a little less scary, it's still got a pretty good story and all that. Don't play Requiem tho... that is such a stupid thing.

Dead Space I really liked a lot. Yeah it's more of an Action game like RE5 but it's fun and definitely has some parts that are scary/creepy.

Speaking of Resident Evil... have you played some of the first ones? Not sure how they stack up now but they were quite terrifying back in the day.

Metro 2033... not really scary. It has some panicky moments, but overall I thought it was a brilliant game.

STALKER is in much the same area as Metro. Except... well, it is different. For the most part STALKER isn't scary at all, but there's areas that are just... yikes. I remember exploring a small tunnel system at night, all these little rat things and some invisible guys and the sounds... oh man it was pretty terrifying. But yeah mostly you can just play out in the sunshine so it's not that bad.

Go grab Condemned Criminal Origins for the 360. My personal GoTY for that year. It was amazing and the last level in particular will have you terrified. Also, never play the sequal. Not only does it render the ending to the first invalid, it also is a lot less scary.

I'm not much for the way of horror games, but I can appreciate atmosphere, and two games that I've played recently that have that are The Path (buy it on Steam; it's slow as hell, cartoony, and with a cruddy story, but damned if you won't be apprehensive about where and when you go), and Korsakovia (download it off ModDB, it's a free mod for HL2). Man, I hardly got anywhere in Korsakovia, I admit to being bad at horror games. I like movies though.

Can't agree more. "Hey, you know that guy you could have shot in the head? Well he's (don't know how to spoiler, so SPOILER) alive. Also you have super powers. Sound good?"
The bear was cool though. I liked the bear.

Wat.

Seriously, go play those, now. Dead Space on Medium (or hard, if you want), and Metro 2033 on Hardcore or one of the Ranger difficulties.
>implying difficulty = horror
Not at all. I'm just trying to prevent him from coming back and complaining about the game being too easy (like Dead Space), or enemies taking too much damage (Metro 2033 on difficulties under Ranger).

Also, this isn't 4chan.
A sudden thought about the difficulty of Dead Space: Insane mode: All enemies are Regenerators. No killing. Just slowing and fleeing. I found the parts with that guy actually tense and somewhat frightening (especially the bit where you move the bookshelves or whatever they were, knowing that regardless of what you do now, he'll only be inconvenienced, and he'll follow you no matter what you do.

Haha, fine I'll try them, I guess it's just that Dead Space seems too much like Resident Evil 4 and Metro 2033 seems like it has little replay value. Maybe a rent.

Silent Hill 2 most definitely. You could pick up a preowned PS2 and the game for less the 80 bucks!

Now see, that sounds fuckin' scary.
I have the urge to replay dead space now. Really looking forward to dead space 2, even if it probably won't actually be scary. Looks fucking sweet.

Played it when it first came out, and besides "Would you kindly?" I wasn't particularly impressed. Combat and plasmids were fun, sure, but I never picked it up again. Never tried the second one.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the bear. Holy crap that was great, and the decision they made by not having it appear again was a great one. I always expected it to come back! Oh, soilering works like this [spoilerx] INSERT SPOILERY THINGYS HERE [/xspoiler] just remove the x's.
