He found out what happened to Jiub. But the emperor couldn't have that little state secret get out, now, could he?
He died defending Morrowind from Daedra from the Oblivion Gate crisis.

He was stupid enough to wear the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal in the presence of a guard/soldier/authority figure.

Arrested for repeated assault on players while impersonating a guard. Also claimed to have "psychic powers"

Fire, lots of fire... most of it wasn't his fault really! He was just walking along then he's attacked by a wolf, so how hero instinctively throws a fireball at the wolf sending the wolf flying backwards... and into a barn full of hay. And one thing led to another, he accidentally burned down the town and at his trial the following was said:

Judge: You are accused of being a setting fire to an entire entire town... how do you plead?

Hero: Whoa, before we go any further I'd like to remind the court that i tried to put the fires out!

Judge: You made them worse!

Hero: Worse? Or better?

Judge: I've had enough, give him the rope...

(Guards drag our hero away)

Hero: I REGRET NOTHING!

After mudering most of an entire city's gaurds he wanted to go inside and sell them all the stuff he'd looted from their corpses. So He stood outside the gates immobile for three whole days (standard procedure) and was picked up for grand 1st degree loitering. Which had just become punishable by death.

There are really two possible explanations:

For the inevitable assassin character I play, it will because the strange little Bosmer is not alright in the head. The Nords never really liked the guy in the first place, I mean he's pale as all get out, and never talks to anybody ever. They found him one night in a noble woman's house in the fettle position in a pool of blood, blabbering incoherently about the divine purpose the Night Mother has for him. Yeah...people were freaked out.

For the mage/warrior/combination of the two I play: An skilled (magic)/athletic (warrior) youth who became a respected protector of his village, and thus inspired much jealousy in his peers. One night, a band of thugs decided to gang rape a girl. That girl turned out to be our hero's sister. None of them survived. The guards were called in regardless.

I don't know. I did not play Oblivion. So I would have no clue. Just a stupid question, are Oblivion and Skyrim in the same world/universe?
Yes. The game Oblivion takes place in the providince of Cyrodiil, whereas Skyrim is in a providince by the same name. Both are on the contenient Tamriel, and the world/planet is Nirn.

Theft and occasional murder (but only annoying people) My character is often glimpsed as he flees the scene. How he was caught is another story.

Well I always play an Argonian. So if that's what they'll let me play then I'm going with he was basically a slave to an imperial family in cirodill. Essentially a servant who also owed the guy for room and board at his house. He tried running away from his debt but as he was leaving the guy and a pair of personal guards confronted him and things turned ugly. My dude escaped but during the fight a torch is knocked down or some such and the house ends up burning down. Killing the lord's wife and daughter who were sleeping upstairs during the quick fight. My guy runs away to skyrim to escape the law, and the terrible guilt of his past, when the lord finally finds him and demands blood. So starts the game i suppose.

That might be a tad too detailed, but that's what happens when it's this late :/

Also, I'm not quite sure how the story actually starts, so I could be breaking the way the story starts, I don't know.

my characters typical battle garb immediately attracted attention when I crossed over into Skyrim in pursuit of a rather nasty looking dragon that had been terrorizing a town in the whatever part of Cyrodill it has to be in direction wise so that it borders Skyrim. And When the guards came into my field of vision, I lost sight of the dragon just as the guards who saw me kept their eyes trained on me and never noticed (or atleast paid no mind to) the dragon flying right over their heads
