This game does exist. [http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/wolf]
It's abandonware. [http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/46-simulation/20965]
You're welcome. :)
It's a good reference, but this game is a fossil. Definetly not the end product I am aiming for.

Fuck wolves. I'd sooner have a game where you play as a Tyrannosaurus Rex with lasers mounted on his shoulders, and missiles that shoot out of his eyes. And I kill shit.

Put me on the pre-order list! Sounds great!

Though you wouldn't want it to be SUPER realistic for the same reason you wouldn't want a visual novel with every choice in the universe. It wouldn't be a game then. It would be too much like real life blah blah blah...

I think I'd prefer this if it was more arcade-like, but I don't think I'd enjoy a strict simulation-type game. Remember Snake? Going around eating things to become stronger is a fun and primal concept for games, and I think it has good potential in general. I'm not saying this has to be an arcade-style game, it's just that I personally like the idea of running around hunting animals, maybe eventually graduating to humans as some others have suggested.

Oh, and I suggest not merely restricting it to wolves. With good animations for various creatures, and data on their strengths and weaknesses, you could let players be dozens of different animals.

With a cheat code to play as T. Rex, I would definitely buy this game.

A game like that would actually be pretty interesting but there should be more options of animals to chose from
I would be a giant mutated chameleon that would be so powerful, it would still pose a threat at level 20! And then an Irishman in his early twenties would stumble across the game and nearly shit his pants when he finds the creature's sanctuary.

(True story!)

...I really really really like this idea. You could even *die* and continue on through your offspring. Perhaps you could have a campaign time line? Like back when humans were just starting to domesticate wolves to dogs, then you could move to a time when your part of a sled dog team, and essentially *break away* from the pack, to find your wolf roots, then you would move forward to a time when humans were hunting you, and finally ending off with just trying to survive in today's world. (That part would be freeform, online multiplayer, like you have to deal with hunters and enemy packs.) Of course certain animals would be applicable to the different timelines/locations of where each campaign is. Do these ideas sound good?

A lot of this sounds good. I like the idea of being a part of a pack that transcends history. Even more appealing is the idea of a Sled dog (probably already a halfblooded wolf, as most sled dogs are) and breaking away from the pack. I'm pretty sure there was a book that rings home the same concept I am aiming for.... a really fuckin old book, but good nonetheless. The only things I don't like are the changing between animals. The concept itself is a good one, but I can't think of how to incorporate this without the "mythical" device. Or at the very least, something which may border on the mythical/unexplained. If someone can think of some plot elements which might tie all these animals together in a tasteful way, then I can see a mechanic for it being more achievable. As it stands, I believe the custimization and RPG elements may bring about enough diversity to kickstart it. What other animals would you like to be able to play as? Here are some which come to mind: Mountain Lion, Cougar, Mustang, Lynx, Falcon/Hawk/Eagle or some other bird of prey, Wolf/Arctic Wolf/ Black wolf, Bear/Kodiak/Grizzly/Polar. Some storyline elements would be awesome, if anyone has some ideas about that as well.

I was going to make a joke but then I thought about how my joke was going to use a leveling system with a karma system to make your wolf's appearance change based on decision when I thought how good of an idea it was, you go the whole game without killing a single human in cold blood and you turn into a snow white wolf. On the other hand kill any of them you see and you get to be a black wolf... with red eyes, and avoiding hunters will be part of the karma system using stealth, more than likely getting to the point that if you have them at your mercy it comes down to the choice to kill or spare, as for the appearance changing from leveling, well you start out at level 1 as a cub and max level winds up being waaaaaay up there and you mature into a big ass wolf.

Yeah...that does sound like a joke, becuase I HATED Fable. And that is pretty much what you just described. On the other hand, FO3 handle the Karma system just as bad in some ways. I'm not sure how to really tackle that subject, although I'm certain this game would have morale options on killing or not. I like the idea of the Wolf grdaully geting bigger as you progress.

Personally, I think I'd prefer to play as a human trying to survive in the wild. Bear Grylls: THE GAME!!!

One word: Furries.
What? WHERE?!?

Right here.

AAAAAAAAAAH BLASHPEMY!!!! But serially, that's awful, dishonouring TF2 in that manner, associating them with furries. Well, only the were all BLU and the realy TF2 squad was RED.

OT: But anyway, that concept seems amazing, especially from a first person perspective, it would be exhilarating, motion sickness could be a problem though.

I'm new as of yesterday, and I don't want to start any flame wars. Please drop the furries.

I really never liked TF2, too cartoony. It reminds me a lot of Time Spliters, only more lame. At least TS2 and on had a large variety of weapons and modes of play. Anyways, aside from the Co-op and possibly a Vs MP that is were the similarities would stop between In The Wild and TF2.

Would you stop saying disgusting stuff? I don't want to hear about furries, and I doubt anyone else does either.

It should have weather effects. Like tornadoes or earthquakes.

Maybe you could include different species of wolves. Every species could have a different story, different setting, and possibly different gameplay.

That sounds more like a game about werewolfs instead of a real wolf simulator. Maybe different gameplay and setting, but I don't think a Wolf simulation game could have a story.

No, this isn't a Werewolf game. Although it may come off as that. For some reason I keep thinking of Way of the Samurai for PS2, but this would be Way of the Wolf. Okagi really set me to working on this idea, although Okagi is definetly about mythical forces. So I guess it may be necessary to include mystical forces into the game.

Weather effects would definetly help add atmosphere to the game, and may even affect gameplay. The idea of having several story arcs for each species is an interesting concept. A wolf, a sled dog, a grizzly bear, mountian lion, and a hawk; and somehow all their stories tie together. That would be amazing.
