I think that's why the sub genre (if it can truly be called that) is so interesting when done right; The antagonist and protaganist are often the same person, often openly so to the audience, meaning you want the monster to stop killing people, but simulateously want it to escape from those that hunt it.
"Dog Soldiers" - at least I am pretty sure that's the name of it, is probably the best werewolf movie out. They really do act convincingly, none of the cliched,"You got to fight it!" and the werewolf stops and holws then runs away.
Also, in Avatar.
When did humanity, the undisputed masters of genocide and slaughter lose all their bloodthirst and gusto? We've got enough poison gas, biological agents, and napalm to kill pandora seven times over.
I mean, the scene at the end where they just slowly fly over the stupid stree to drop some sandbags filled with gunpowder was rediculous...they must have lost missles or something.
