I'm going to write "Red Steel". As someone else put it, it was the opposite of a system seller ie, Halo came out and validated the existence of the Xbox. Red Steel came out and it was so bad it almost invalidated the existence of the Wii.

A game so bad it nearly kills a console is a pretty colossal failure.

The most famous one I can think of is Starfox Adventures. Much delayed, the beloved Rare's last Nintendo exclusive, and with one of their flagship franchises. The game had so much hype, and ended up being a disappointingly average Zelda clone. It was far from terrible, but was so far below what was expected of it it left a bad taste in the mouth.

The same applies to Assassin's Creed although I think that sold too well to be considered a flop.

The worst flop of all time? Twilight Princess, easily. The runner-up is ME2, which is in turn followed closely by KOTOR 2.

The worst game of all time? ^I don't know^, but I thought Lost Odyssey was nothing short of painful.
What's with the hate for Twilight Princess? I thought it was totally superior to Ocarina of Time.

The addition of the Dungeoneering skill in RuneScape comes to mind, here we were, ready for a brand new skill, and what we got was a mini-game cleverly disguised as a skill that used elements from every other skill in that game, it just made no sense.

I also have to bring up Star Wars Battlefront for the PSP (or is it Battlefront 2?...I can't remember which one it is right now) but I bought it, played for 5 minutes, then ejected it from the PSP because I couldn't believe how bad it was (please keep in mind, this is just my opinion)

Advent Rising.

Worst. FUCKING. Game. Ever
Thing is...that's something of a cult classic these days. Although you're quite right, it was a major flop.

Fable 2 - I still own it, but jeeez man, I hate the impending scar after death, the fact that the death is nothing, and my character's body grows. For crying out loud, I had a very sexy goth girl that turned into AMAZON, and not the pretty type. Left me annoyed and I had to continue to drop my EXP points because of it x.x Stupid magic use putting veins on girl, stupid muscles. GIMME EXP that won't alter my character unless I fricken say so!!

Dante's Inferno - I actually had a low view on this game, and it crashed that below Fable 2. Yeah, that bad.

the Saboteur - This is the one that disappointed me the most, It was a good idea that was stomped down with the ideas of trying to make it a GTA clone. the Sidequests were redundant, the one car I wanted couldn't be saved (the brit's car) and very hard to find. The story was equally feeling GTA-y, with the plot (which I read after awhile) ending in such a way that I didn't feel like continuing. So, Saboteur bombed in my mind.

People seem to be confusing 'flop' with 'games I personally didn't like'. There's plenty of -good- games that weren't as successful as would've been hoped, and plenty of bad games that are successful, and while a game can flop because of bad design, shoddy visuals, poor advertising or just plain being an awful game, getting those factors right on their own rarely seems to create a best-seller.

A bad flop: Deus Ex 2. It saw a drastic changes and ended up alienating it's fanbase. It's not exactly a terrible game, there are far worse, but it couldn't live up to Deus Ex. Although, I've always found it funny that the game actually looks -worse- than DS1. And DS1 is no prize pig in the looks department, but graphically, DS2 is an ungodly mess of badly rendered 3d and boring maps.

A good flop: Psychonauts. I never really got why it did so poorly, it was a fun and funny offbeat gem of a game. At yet barely anyone bought it? I've see plenty of threads with people declaring their undying love for Tim Schafer and anything he touches...so what's with the discrepancy?

Lost Planet 2...

I loved the first one and was hoping for a title that would not only add to the series but fix on the faults of the first...

And that's not what happened... HAZE and Alpha Protocol are runners up.
