(but that may be because it's being developed by a Canadian studio, Blue Castle Games).
Dude, Dead Rising 2 is Canadian? That is *awesome*! Go us!

The problem is that in Japan, they have these people who keep creating all these games that are exactly alike. They have tons of JRPGs, tons of the same kinds of adult games, it's simply more and more of the same. Of course, there are plenty of developers such as Konami and Capcom who play the field and make all kinds (actually, Capcom is a publisher, but shut-up!) of games about all kinds of things. Lots of good games come out of Japan, but by and large, they're swarmed with countless JRPGs and otaku hentai eroge nonsense.

But he's wrong if he thinks the industry is on it's last leg. There'll always be droves of Japanese otakus who will buy the games, and if they do get bored of them, adaptations will be made.

For anyone who doesn't know crap about Japan, let's just say that their JRPG is the equivalent to our First Person Shooter in terms of amount and altogether quality.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can say this when Nintendo is still one of the best-selling/most critically acclaimed developers out there. Though I suppose they are mostly referring to the once dominant JRPG.

This year's TGS certainly was a whole lot of nothing. This is supposed to be the biggest gaming show after E3. Unfortunately it felt like GamesCom's left overs.

I think Inafune-san is correct. I look on the Japanese PSN Store, or somewhere like YesAsia at import games and there' nothing interesting or innovative there. The last game I really enjoyed from Japan was probably "Afrika", which I still think is hugely underrated, a gem of a game.
Sure, you could say much the same of the West, but I always think there's going to be an amazing US or even UK-developed game just round the corner, whereas I've lost hope of that happening with what is to me the home of video games, Japan.

I call shenanigans, Nintendo still exists
if they keep on putting out Super Smash bros games and... well Super smash brother games at least
they'll do fine

Y'know making Mother 4 could probably fix this.

:p
No, it wouldn't. Mother 3 was the perfect conclusion. Everything was resolved at the end, and the shear impact the ending left on the player can never be topped.
Oh fine then.

Shigesato Itoi's Bass Fishing 2.

I blame Square-Enix. Stop milking the Final Fantasy franchise already!! You used to produce some amazing stuff that weren't Final Fantasy back in SNES, what happened?
Maybe if consumers stopped buying, they'd stop selling? Supply and demand and all that...
I've been saying that for months now, but nobody seems to be listening...
Well I don't really see a problem. If you look at the list of Square Enix games [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Square_Enix_games] you'll see that while the FF series does feature prominently, they have a fair few other games and IPs out there as well. They've done numerous JRGs which don't have an FF title so it's clear that they aren't just churning out FF after FF.

But, since people keep buying, they'll keep making and the fault falls almost entirely with the consumer (if indeed there is any 'fault' to be had.)

Eh what does this jackass know. Dead Rising sucked. His opinion means no more than michael bay or uwe boll bitching about others movies would.
That would be a brilliant point if Dead Rising sucked. Sadly for you, it was a great game, which makes you wrong. Sorry.

I can't help but suspect that this stagination that seems to be affecting large Japanese companies (Nintendo an exception in certain respects) is reflected in small scale indie developers. It seems to me that Japanese Doujin developers pretty much focus on honing and perfecting the same small-scale friendly genres that have been their province for years (visual novels and shmups in particular). While there are plenty of decent games there, with Cave Story specifically arguably being the blue tocuhpaper of indie gaming's increased prominence, it seems the innovations, both conceptually in art-games, like the Path and Passage, and technically, is being done in America and Europe, especially Scandinavia. of course, it could be the inventive Japanese developers are simply the ones who don't get noticed or translated by the west.

Come to think of it, that goes for you too Nintendo & Sega! Stop milking your main franchises and come up with something NEW!
But you know the irony ? Nintendo tries something new and the hardcore crowd cries for more Zelda, Mario and Metroid. And when Nintendo does, the same crowd ***** about the lack of innovation IP wise.

Good riddance to bad rubbish if the Japanese game market dries up. I don't mean that to be racist, simply that I don't like Japanese games as a general rule (there are exceptions, like Final Fantasy VI and Katamari Damacy, but on the whole my collection's over 95% Western-developed.)
But your collection is heavy on strategy, simulation, and RPGs, is it not?

The West seems largely incapable of making arcade-style games that are worth playing. Fighting games? I can't name a single one. Shoot'em ups? I can name two.

I have imported three Japanese games just in the last two months, played tens of hours of free Japanese PC games, plus old arcade stuff with MAME. Just a thought - maybe your beef is not with the Japanese developers, but the Western publishers who only bring over a small fraction of the best stuff.

If they made Shenmue 3 it might change. >_>
Ahhhh, nice to see someone keeping the faith. When the Shenmue series completes I'll be able to die happily.

But Shenmue is a good point in this case. The entire project if you include the devoplement of the saturn games is one of the most expensive gaming projects ever, if not the. And it only appealed to a tiny niche market. They made such a loss that every Dreamcast owner in the world would have to buy shenmue 1 & 2 twice each for sega to even break even.

Still a great couple of games if you like capsule toys, space harrier and mundane converations, and you want to know where sailors hang out. Which I Do.

Hmm, with the exception of Nintendo, I doubt I'd mourn the loss. Do I think they're going to all go out of business? Seems unlikely.

I'm aware of that. I even said so in my original post. It's only been in the last several years that they've been milking the Final Fantasy franchise to death. Dragon Quest too.

Metal Gear Solid these days tends to have it's hardest mode called "European Extreme" for this reason.
Actually the main reason for that one is that Metal Gear Solid games generally took so bloody long to reach Europe that Konami would include new features to appease us. Both Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 had significant delays between their US and EU releases, but reached Europe with new features. Metal Gear Solid 4 on the other hand got released in Europe on the same day as everywhere else, and to my knowledge no European Extreme mode exists.
