I don't think the Tokyo Game Show, especially in a time of economic recession, is an accurate measurement of how their games industry in Japan is doing. For the size of the country they are releasing/working on a decent number of quality games. One such game that will be out here in about two weeks is demon's souls(just an example). I think the reason for Inafune's statement was pretty clear after the his background was made clear. He prefers western games and development over development in Japan. What he has said is his opinion and he is entitled to it, but that doesn't make it true.

Yes, that is a small man riding a dinosaur while chasing down some zombies, what of it?
Disclaimer: that last bit was meant in good humor.

Haha, he's a western gamer at heart I guess. Not a fan of the rpgs and such i assume. Honestly if I didn't already know I would have never guessed Dead Rising was a japanese game. Eh, do I think the Japanese game market is going anywhere? Hell no, the weeaboos eat that shit up. Do I think it's declining? Not really. However I think the problem is that they haven't really advanced too far in any aspect other than graphics. They've been making the same generic RPGs and the same generic action games for years. Hell, Nintendo has even resorted to making their whole entire system a gimmick. Granted there are some exceptions, but really, what the hell has come out of japan recently that you can honestly say "Ive never seen something like this, this is completely original" in comparison to western devs?

I've actually been kinda thinking of this for a while now. The times are changing, and gamers aren't into what they once were. You can feel the influence of western games in alot of games now days, JRPG's are either really bland or just a rip off of the last action rpg that came out.

Shooters are pretty much the order of the day for most gamers now (much to my own dismay,) to the point where people were upset that Cole didn't use a gun in Infamous. Although the shooter thing is an entirely different rant I have, I think it shows how things are changing and merging. Hopefully it's all for the best, but I'll be very sad to see the death of games like Onimusha and Devil May Cry(the original.)

I can actually agree with the guy, Western games are really becoming a powerhouse of their own and Japan's lime light is starting to get overshadowed.
Of course there's still a lot of great games that will come out of Japan, but when you have games like Gears of War, Halo, Mass Effect and Left 4 Dead that sell millions and millions of copies, then maybe you should look at the West as actual competition.

They better keep making Monster Hunter in Japan, though, or I'll kick some booty.

If half the shit that comes out of Japan is considered "Creative", I don't want to be.

If you create something that gives people eye popping orgasms. I have no problem with you making newer and newer rehashes of such a thing.

The major problem with sequels is they come off of games that don't really give anyone an orgasm, they just make good enough games that appease just enough people to justify existing.

Some small exceptions aside of course. But most times when I see a sequel I'm shocked.

"But...but...that game was in no way better than its competitors?" Stuff like that.

well dead or alive... atleast Japanese developers still know how to use colour. I miss the vividly colours of yesteryears games I mean sure some cartoony games use colour but why is it all so gritty

I'd love to see a remade Policenauts (in english or japanese), keeping the game anime/cell shaded and point-n-click, just with higher resolutions.

Hideo Kojima would make a motza.

Western developers had their golden age in the 90s and very early 00s, starting with Amiga and moving onto PC. The 00s were dominated by Japan until about '07, at which point Japan started sucking as much as the West. Right now it's a contest between the West's consistent mediocrity and Japan's occasional moments of genius.
I advise you to check the PC market outside of the retail space. Most of the stuff there is western and a lot of it is fresh takes on new and old stuff.

While I tend to agree that man Japaneese games have fallen into the Nintendo trend of simply remaking old games, I cannot help but notice the amusing implication in his words that only the games his company makes are going to be great, as there obviously is no bias in that opinion a all whatsoever.

[edit]: Huh, way for me to go in not noticing the date of an article I was linked to before commenting.

Is not only square enix, but also the amount of porn game and fan services that was put in many "made in Japan" game company.
Ex.fan services: final fantasy-0's panties and shit, the 3rd birthday's clothes rip off and shower thing
Ex.porn game:http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OI2CbzEoQtM,Senran Kagura

These things make Japan look so bad that it shame their samurai grandfather's honor(but they already did since they kill the last few samurai with gatling cannon in the end of last samurai.)

Motomu Toriyama will most likely the one to put the blame due to his otakusim bullshit.
