Well... yeah. Don't fictional characters usually conform to ideals of physical appearance?
You'll notice that most guys in video games are tall and muscular.
That said, it would be cool to see some more chunky and/or chubby characters in games, if only for the sake of variety.
Pretty much this the only difference is women tend to care more about their appearance than men so that is why you hear much more complaining from women. Also what I tend to find is that the women complaining are normally the ones that have had kids and then spent 10 years sat on the sofa and wonder why they are no longer attractive so they try to bring down women that are more attractive.
I think there is a line that needs to be drawn
I don't agree with the attitude "aww well that's just fiction for ya right?" because its something of a defeatist attitude
there's a difference between being attractive and being a blatant sex object (a needless sex object)
I've been playing Uncharted 1/2 and it makes me think of Elana, she's attractive, but she's also believable in the cloths she wears and her general appearance, or even Chloe (I think its Chloe) whos more of a "sexy" character is also somewhat belavable
or Ellie from Dead Space 2, Zoe from left 4 dead..most of the females in Fallout NV (provided you don't dress them up in sexy PJ's)....the up coming Tomb Raider (just going buy what I've seen so far)
Mass effect is both guilty of the good and bad, I mean I like a character Like Liara..and sure people like her sex apeal...however it annoys the crap out of me when I see a teeshirt or other merch that depicts her in a seductive pose because thats NOT her character (then again thats just a small nitpick)
on the opposite end....(hmm). any game I guess with the "bikini armour" problem, or where a charachter is scantily clad for no real reason...like at the start of "sabotour" theres this lady who is "suposed" to be some kind of natzi officer...except she literally (I mean literally here) looks like a natzi themed stripper...in fact ALOT of the female characters are scantiliy clad in ways you KNOW was not ok for the 40's.....and it seems to be trying to be somewhat straight in its setting (somewhat)
my point here is that there IS a difference...its kind of hard to explain but its there, like when you think of Batman... what's the first thing that pops into your head? is it his skin tight suit and those rippling muscles?...no, its his determination and pure "awesome" factor
now what's the first thing that comes to mind in regards to cat women?....see what I mean?
there's also the "pose" argument...
anyway..to be completely honest? its not actually the appearance that Im more concerned about...its female characters presence/role in the story
