Actually I agree with Keyser, all the Indians I have ever worked with or for and studied with have been extremely hostile towards people they view as under their position. There was a nice student who was very friendly towards me until he saw my car and started treating me like crap immediately, culturally they seem very materialistic.
It depends on which Indians you're talking about though. I'm Indian myself, but born and raised in Canada so the whole caste system is non-existent. As far as I can tell, Indians who aren't born in India don't seem to follow it.

However, if these are Indians who've migrated from India, then there's a chance they do follow the caste system. And let me tell you; it sucks. Even my parents, who've lived in Canada for over 30 years let a derogatory thing about lower castes slip every now and then, and it's pretty sad.

But, that's much better than the hardcore traditional Indians who kill people over the caste system. I heard a news case about how a daughter tried to marry a man from a lower caste, and so the uncle had them both killed. Furthermore, the police are ridiculously corrupt so all he had to do was pay them off.

But hey, if you do ever feel like being rich for a while, go to India. $1 CAD = $43 Indian Rupees, and there are tons of servants. (Which, by the way, some Indians are totally useless because they're used to having servants do everything for them =_=)

I believe that the story has a update that (forgive me if i'm wrong) the Indian man was trying to burn his car for the insurance money but burned himself in the process, so he said that he was bashed and burned to cover his arse...
i think this is what i heard on 3AW!

I will admit that there is some racism in Australia towards Asian's. It's not nearly as strong a it used to be and it really ins't directed towards Indians. More Chinese and Japanese. If the attacks were against them i would definitely say they were racially motivated. But i'm not so sure about the ones against Indians. I know for a fact that there are always lots of fights in Melbourne, and Indian student's do go out allot and not being local they tend to not know how to handle themselves (i.e, avoid the wankers) as well as Australians. So to me that makes sense as to why so many Indians seem to be attacked. But i could be wrong.

edit: Oh and the scumbags in Melbourne have also clicked on that Indians generally have good phones/Ipods so they have become very popular mugging targets.

Saw this a while back actually http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/8494866.stm if it was an insurance scam then it would be pretty embarrassing.

Yes! That is exactly what someone right above you said and which many people failed to notice. I believe another Indian attack was actually carried out by fellow Indian students or something, it's only two instances of racism but it does kind of take the edge off.

However I have no belief that Australia doesn't contain groups of racists. Not everyone is racist of course, I'd say that we're fairly a multicultural and easy going society, but within is Pauline Hanson and her followers and when you have people like that hanging around it's difficult to claim innocence. Oh sure, the racists aren't in the majority and don't represent the majority but it's still there and always will be. Just as the BNP doesn't represent England and the KFC KKK the US. Anyway, the defense 'We're not racist' can be beaten with 'well some of you are so shut your face' so it is possible for any country to be called racist by another which is why I find this whole debacle stupid. You want to call Australia racist, fine, I'll call your country racist as well and we'll be at a standstill. By bringing attention to these attacks the Indian Government is making a fool of itself and acting out the hypocrite. It's pointless and if they really didn't want their people coming here for an education and then being educated on why nice beaches, a small population and no slums make for a nice living they should just stop giving people the opportunity to move here. Maybe that would be illegal or something, I don't know.

Besides, I highly doubt that these attacks are racially motivated. Alright they were probably carried out by all whites and those involved probably don't like Indians very much but I don't think they were carried out with the intention of beating up Indian people. They had the intention of beating up people full stop. Melbourne can be a dangerous city and plenty of people are hurt and killed by douche bag groupings and not all of them are Indian, most aren't.

This is ridiculous. Sure some of them may be racially motivated, just like I am sure many murders in India are racially motivated.

Hell the murder rate in Australia is less than half of that in India and yet Indians are scared to come here?! Seriously?!

Newspapers don't report on the race of every murder victim, it is silly. But lately every time an Indian is the victim of violence it is the only thing talked about.

Just so ridiculous.

They were all from India I believe, I have no doubt that someone of Indian descent that wasn't raised with the caste system would have very different values.

Bah. It's not frigging racist attacks, its soft targets in the wrong place at the wrong time. Melbourne IS the crime capital of Australia, after all (though our Gold Coast is catching up fast).

Just out of curiosity, why is not a "racially motivated attack" when an Indian rapes or attacks a white woman (as has happened up here over 20 times in the last two years)?
source or it didnt happen. I was a foreign exchange student in india and after i made many india friends in america. Usually the ones that go abroad and leave india are the ones that are educated and look for a job, not ones that would "rape white women" dont be ignorant. If you wanna prove me wrong, show me your source

To everyone that is talking about the caste system: It is obsolete but there are some people that still follow it in rural parts of India. Those people that still follow it arent usually the ones moving to a new country to study or look for a job. Slavery is gone but racism isnt, its kinda teh same concept there.

Guys, you really didn't think that Austrailians wouldn't get violent? Not after L4D2?
I feel awful, because this actually made me laugh. And I'm part Indian too, ballsss.

I've never heard of extreme racism in Australia before, so this is pretty surprising.
