This is a ridiculously silly question but I'm one to check for technicalities: When you said our reviews must be sent via private message "spoiler free", did you mean in regards to the game or in regards to the message? I sent in a second message and put it in spoiler tags to save room, and I know I'm probably (hopefully) wasting my breath, but I just wanted to make sure.

A quick question: Can we provide links in our reviews? Because I currently have a link to TvTropes' MacGuffin page to explain its meaning.

I can always take it out if you're unhappy with it, but the wording won't be as snappy.
Links are fine.

The second message was fine. Spoiler-free means don't spoil game content.

Other than for editing purposes are there any other disadvantages to posting later rather than earlier?

Posting it, at all, is a really bad idea. PMing it is the right thing to do. As far as the timing goes, there's literally no difference.

1) So, you don't really have to make any arrangments or announce your participation, do you?
2) How exactly will the community thing work? A thread for each match and a poll.

1. Aside from figuring out what game to review and sending the review in, you don't have to make arrangements. Considering the community makes up the judging team, it never hurts to familiar yourself with them. That's mostly the point of the thread.

2. The reviews will be assembled in rounds. Depending on how many participants, the rounds may come in 1-4 pairs of match-ups. There won't be a poll, as votes won't be anonymous. After the voting period has ended, winning reviews will move on to the next round.

Also, if I use the Indie Developers Showcase thing-y to find a game to review, is that lazy or likely to hurt my review?
I guess I'll participate, why the hell not?

That depends on the voting public. I suspect you won't be penalized, but I have no way to know for sure.

Oh, allright.
Thanks a lot for organizing the competition, btw. At least I have something to do for the next week or so.

Man this review is killing me.

Also I have two question

Who are the judges?

You've mentioned 'the community' a couple of times, but then you told us to familiarize ourselves with them. Unless I missed something, who makes up the 'community'? Is it Forum goers or staff?

Also, "The prize is a strings-free[2] full review published on the site by The Escapist"

But then you mention that it has restrictions. If I'm going for a different non official type of review, will that effect the prize?

(Not that I'm likely to win, not with all those other great writers on board)

EDIT: Woops, guess I should PM Kuliani about that.

And out of curiosity, why no captions?

1. As far as the community goes, it'll go up on this board as a round-by-round basis. Anyone with a user account can submit a vote, and I'll be counting the votes by hand. The only rule is to b careful of spontaneous new accounts showing up to vote. If they make one post - to vote - and never post again, they'll likely be disqualified as a vote.

2. That's the ever-lovely Kuliani's field of expertise, so you're right to PM him there. Good call.

3. The 'no captions' rule is simply another step to the challenge. Incorporating a good picture is tough enough for a review, getting it to hit home where its placed is another point of a good review. Someone who does it right can really call attention to a highlight or criticism to a game. Its a subtlety that means as much for a review layout and style as word choice, sentence structure, and all that. How it affects the review should show up in the votes, and just adds some depth to the contest and challenge.

And because I said so. Mostly because I said so, in fact.

Two reviews will be pit against one another by drawing, and the review with the most votes will move to the next round. All reviews are on a single-elimination basis.
Okay, so what happens if you get an uneven number of entires?
Death by firing squad. Depends on how the bracket looks. I'll submit byes if need be, but it will probably just mean one or more rounds will be head-to-head-to-head.

I have the feeling that my review has no chance at wining. But nevertheless, it should prove for an interesting read.

What do you mean send it to you? Do you mean Copy and paste the Review then put it in the message or attachment?
PM me with the review content. Since it's going to be on the forum, it's best if you've formatted it to BBCode.

I'll definitely have to give this a go. No harm in participating, eh?

Just remember, folks, it's not winning that matters- it's the taking part that counts.

Still won't stop me from beating you all. Good luck, everyone =D
